LTTP: Astro Boy | 2009's Speed Racer

It wasn't as good as Speed Racer nor is it very comparable but it was still a solid movie. It isn't as good as PLUTO or the original though. There were much better animated films this year mainly cause 2009 was an amazing year for animation.

Saw it in theaters, bought the DVD.

Fantastic film. It doesn't break new ground or anything, but it's a very well-done film and deserved to do much better than it did.
Which would make it very clearly NOT 2009's Speed Racer IMO.

Shut your goddamn mouth. Yes, Dreamworks have pumped out a lot of terrible, pop-culture infused talking animal shit.

But you know what? They're allowed to. Because they also gave birth to the finest animated feature that is The Prince of Egypt.

Imagi doesn't come close.

Easy there internet typer.

That's hardly Dreamworks. At least the Dreamworks that exists today.
Most of the people that worked on that flick were exiles from Disney and other people that later returned, moved to Pixar, or other studios.

And 1998 was a long time ago as good as that movie is, you can't hang your hat on 1 movie 12 years ago.

That's all well and good, but name me one Imagi project in their entire lifecycle that compares with Dreamworks' better pictures. Don't get me wrong, I think Dreamworks today is 95% dogshit. But 5% of those flicks are at least decent. PoE, the original Shrek and Kung Fu Panda (which I still think is slightly overrated) are better than any of Imagi's output.

I missed this in the theaters as well, which is odd considering I'm a big Astro Boy fan. I ended up watching the movie last night through Netflix and came away thoroughly disappointed.

Every now and again, the movie did a scene right (Toby's death and Tenma's rejection of his creation come immediately to mind), but those moments were few and far between. They were mostly buried among pointless characters (the surface urchins, the RRF) and bad, Dreamworks-style shtick (wise-cracking spray bottles, the "wacky" messages popping up on the police visors, "I am so freaking out!", "I'm old school").

The script was also filled with awkwardly-inserted exposition ("she'd flip if she knew I could lift it," "the robot laws have been in place for 50 years," etc.) that kept breaking the flow of the story.

As for the voice acting, the only actor who left me impressed was Bill Nighy. Nicholas Cage and Donald Sutherland in particular were horrible. Especially Sutherland. Freddie Highmore was serviceable as Astro.

The movie did, however, look quite nice. Although I felt that the robot design was a lot more Ratchet & Clank than Astro Boy.

I was planning on picking up the BD because, like I said, I'm a big Astro Boy fan, but I'm gonna pass now. It just wasn't very good.

And for the record, Speed Racer was my favorite movie of 2008.

Astroboy isn't 2009's Speed Racer because that spot is already taken by Takashi Miike's Yatterman.

No argument there.

How does that man keep getting work?

How can people be disappointed about this movie "not living up to the source material"? It's not like the source material was incredibly robust except in sheer longevity, folks!

Okay. You guys win. Speed Racer is the shit. The only bad part was really Speed's little brother, but other than that, damn good flick.

Guess I'll hunt down Astro Boy now.

Eh, Yatterman was okay. I would have to see Astro Boy to compare, but I wouldn't be surprised if I liked that more. Though, Yatterman gets points for staying incredibly true to the source material. So much so, in fact, that some things were a little hard to understand. (Seriously, what is that pig on the palm tree thing all about? Why is it funny?) And the rendition of Tensai Doronbo was pretty bad.

Kenneth Branagh says shut your damn mouth.

I felt that Road To El Dorado was fun but kinda generic and forgettable. Prince of Egypt however was an animated epic, and not just because of it's story.

There's only one thing I remember liking about El Dorado. And it definitely wasn't Elton John's songs.

Pretty much echoes my feelings after watching this last night. And I noticed Astroboys point moving from the left side of his head to right in almost every other shot, it started becoming really distracting. :lol

Imagi has some decent animators, but their writing and attempt at humor is god awful.

I honestly didn't notice the moving hair points. Of course, that may have been because the movie was so lackluster that I simply wasn't paying close attention some of the time.

I think the moving points were a compromise to make Astro's hairstyle work in 3D. Astro Boy needs to have his iconic two points at all time, and it's fairly easy to cheat the perspective of that in 2D. With a 3D model, though, you can't, and there are going to be some angles where only one point is visible. I'm guessing that's why the animators flipped the points on occasion.

But still, Astro's moving hair was the least of this movie's problems.

Well it's turns out I didnt. Really wasn't feeling Astro Boy. :lol

I'll vouch for the OP and say that this movie is pretty good. Some might not like it solely because it doesn't resonate on that nostalgic level that most people are expecting. Even so, it isn't in any way an detrimental to series. All in all, it's a good little flick to watch when you've got down time.
