LTTP: Chrono Trigger / So I finally beat Chrono Trigger today

*spoiler warning on the off chance you've yet to play this game*

I'd been ignoring this game long enough, sure as a PAL gamer I didn't get an official release until the DS version but even then I still held off purchasing it, well aside from when I got a pre owned copy that didn't work last year.
But with the recent virtual console release and some left over points at my disposal I finally got round to playing what seems to be not only one of the most highly regarded RPG games of all time but one of the most highly regarded games in general.

The first nod of approval from me was when the game sidestepped one of my JRPG fears which is random battles, okay so there are a few enemies that leap out of nowhere to do battle but it's scripted so that doesn't bother me so much. The battle system itself is an interesting one, while it had me a bit confused at first (not helped by having the health bars/menus and enemies sometimes obscuring each other, I only discovered I could move that thing manually about 2 hours ago) I really liked how the speed factored in with attack time as well as combining attacks. While it may have turn based I found it much more engaging than the standard formula seen in say Dragon Quest meaning it dodged another one of my JRPG fears being a bland battle system.

Now the plot and setting makes great use of the whole time travel theme, one point that stood out in particular was
Zeal, after having many a dungeon based slog and getting thrown into the dark ages it was quite a shock to come across an advanced civilization in the past which was of course quite integral to the main plot.
The characters i'd best describe as charming, nothing overly deep to them but that doesn't hinder them from being enjoyable.
Frog's dilemma was surprisingly hard hitting for me, which in itself is made interesting by the Magus twist. I can't help but be amused by wandering around the middle ages with Magus in tow, you'd think there would be more of an uproar.
So most of the time I went with Crono, Robo and Frog
though eventually Magus and his magic spam wormed his way in and bumped Frog out for the most part.

It was interesting to see that this game doesn't hold your hand, you are left mostly to your own devices to figure out what to do at a few points, while it doesn't head into being cryptic you do have to remember what you've been told and character names/locations because there isn't a guiding arrow around here.
Though to my shame I did have to consult a FAQ for getting up that snowy mountain, never would have expected that i'd be needing dolls that turn into trees. Which reminds me Crono dying? that was pretty unexpected to say the least!

The soundtrack is very nice, there were numerous standouts but i'd be interested in hearing which ones are the most highly regarded, I often find with half the games I play that certain great tracks don't worm into my ear until a repeat playthrough. Though it's safe to say that Frog's theme was pretty damn good.

Earlier today I decided I was going to finish this game today, which I did.
The bad part is that I underestimated the amount of tasks I had to go through. After finishing up a bunch of sidequests I set off for the Black Omen, the boss gauntlet at the end was pretty tiring, such things are not my cup of tea so to speak but it seems to be some kind of RPG tradition so it wasn't unexpected. I hear this game has multiple endings, mine ended with Crono's mother and cat taking a trip through time, that cat had 4 portions of grub! that's hardly an unfed cat.

So in summary the game has aged incredibly well, JRPG's tend to be hit or miss with me but I can safely say this one was a hit, I guess i've still got a few tasks left to do, I never did figure out what the Sun Keep was all about.

You need to
put the moon stone there in 65,000,000 BC, then go to 1000 AD and follow the trail from there.
It's a pretty neat sidequest.

Chrono Trigger is an amazing game in every aspect. Story, characters, gameplay, graphics, music etc. It does everything right. A lot of RPG fans demand adventures be 30-50 hours, but you can beat Chrono Trigger in about 20. However, there is not an ounce of fat in this game, and the sidequests are both interesting and rewarding.

Chrono Cross is worth playing as well, just watch out for the story.

Glad you finally made it TTP, one of the best games of all time.

Incidentally I've never played chrono cross, is that on XBL/PSN?

Probably one of my favorite moments in any game ever, especially since it came right after a few dungeons in succession.

I'm actually debating whether or not to replay this game or The World Ends with You first.

What do you think, GAF? Although the play time might get cut with my purchase of Resident Evil: The Mercenaries tomorrow and my 100% quest in OoT3D

I mentioned this in the CT DS thread, but I'm curious how many of you guys realized that
Ayla is Marle's ancient grandmother and Kino is her ancient grandfather
.

A surprising amount of people I know who love this game don't know this.

Huh? Ayla and Marle basically spell it out to you.

One of the most vivid memories I ever had was right after being teleported back to the middle ages, getting to the overworld and just letting the game sit for a while so I could just listen to the music.

It'll be on PSN eventually. Better game than Trigger imo.

Supposed to be coming to PSN. Hopefully soon.

I was pleasantly surprised that the game didn't overstay its welcome, truly there was no filler here. Also I didn't have to grind at any point which was fantastic as grinding completes my JRPG fear triangle

And yes i'm also guilty of leaving the game on the middle ages and dark ages/Zeal map areas for the music.

I think finding out
that Magus was Janus
was one of the greatest moments of my childhood. Krist..that was like almost 20 years ago..and I still don't think I've played a JRPG that just got everything so right like this game. (MAYBE FF12Zodiac)

If you haven't EVER played The World Ends With You then go with that, but if you've played and completed both then just toss a coin in the air. CT is longer, so depending on how much time you have you may just want to go with TWEWY.

Edit:

Also, this is in my top 5 favorite pieces of videogame music:

me too, i was like '' \ o / ''.
everyone should play chrono trigger and chross.

One of my favorite parts of CT is the whole thing surrounding
Lucca's mom. You see her at the beginning of the game, and everything seems normal, but it isn't until you undertake a particular sidequest that you find out that she can't walk due to an accident. Once you go back in time and save her, she suddenly starts moving around the house in the present. The reveal pretty much hinges on you not questioning why she's always stationary instead of walking around like every other person in the game.
I always thought that was pretty damned cool.

I bought and finished the DS version, but I have to admit I didn't really see what all the fuss was about. It is one game I glad I'm played, but have no intention to revisit, ever.

*runs and hides*

You could bypass
that gauntlet by using the bucket at the End of Time or by using Epoch to travel to 1999 directly
. One of the many great things about Chrono Trigger - so many ways to get to Lavos! Though I would never do that because
smashing Zeal's face in the Black Omen
is awesome.

Artistic decision, designed to make the player feel as depressed as the people in that time

I dunno, I haven't played the game in years and don't remember any real tedious parts

I considered those alternative options but then I would feel like I skipped out on the actual final dungeon. But yes it is a nice to have the options.

You're kidding, but no game made me feel the sadness and hopelessness of the situation as well as this segment until Half-Life 2.

I really need to dive back into this. I got the DS version back when it came out and I think I barely got past the part where Frog joins your party (like - 2-3 hours into the game, lol). I have no idea why I put it down but I just never had a desire to go back to it.

Agreed. It easily makes it up in atmosphere though, at least it did when I was a kid.

Probably the best RPG I've ever played. Every thing about the game was polished to a perfect shine.

Also,
Frog is the best party member

Loved this game back when it came out back in my high school days. Played so much of it, and then... never actually beat it.

It's a pattern with me and RPGs. Play for hours and hours and never really go all the way. I really should jump back in and go through it all. FF6, too. Yes, I am ashamed of myself.

Chrono Trigger was among the first RPGs I had ever played, and I've loved it ever since. The art direction was fantastic, the background art is great, it has vibrant colours, and ATB 2.0. What else can you ask for? Oh yes--and a wonderful score by Mitsuda (who got sick while composing the soundtrack), Uematsu (who picked up the slack for a bit) and Matsueda (one track).

Glad you're enjoying it, OP. It's a game (and series) that's very dear to me.

Fantastic game and in terms of providing a compelling overall package has very few peers. It just does everything well and there really isn't anything I would want to change about it. Before I used to think it could be longer or maybe harder, but now I've done a reverse on both based on a playthrough. The game is perfect the way it is.

Corridors of Time, Schala's Theme, Epoch, Wind, Frog's theme, Magus' theme etc are all fantastic tunes I never tire of.

But today I give special mention to this baby: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TykpyrHAZpw

I have finished this twice and I am pretty sure it's in my RPG top 5, maybe even in top 3.

Gotta give more props to the great battle system too

Something that I didn't see mention that I loved were the multiple endings you could achieve in the game. I never got them all though, but that to me also is what separates the game from other RPGs.

The music in this game is brilliant, excellent choices. I used to sit in my room, whilst hanging out in Zeal just to listen to "Corridor of Time" on repeat.
Heh, reminds me of when I used to get ready for school in the morning and I used to put Chrono Trigger in to load up a save for Zeal, just to listen to Corridors of Time in the morning. SO GOOD.

Aside from the ones posted above, I'd like to give special attention to these:
The Trial (Mitsuda)
Battle with Magus (Mitsuda)
Sealed Door (Uematsu)
Chrono Trigger (Mitsuda)
World Revolution (Mitsuda)

And of course, Frog's Theme (Mitsuda).

Heh, I actually had the main theme set as my morning alarm at one point.

lol Brilliant.

The sewers in the future were boring TBH. The
sun palace fight and Epoch find
though in the future makes it worthwhile. Honestly though, you are talking about some serious competition with the other eras.

Oh yea, best game of all time, etc..., etc... This game is so good that I have trouble even complimenting parts of it. You just have to marvel at the entire game.

EDIT:
Soundtrack fans should head here.

I second this. I'll never forget what a ride it was that first go round. I rented it when I was like 12. My palms were sweating and my heart was racing as I fought
Magus
. The music was so epic and the spells he was firing off looked so damn cool and were putting a serious hurt on my party. It was a cathartic victory when he finally fell. I felt extremely satisfied that I had just completed one hell of a game. I nearly shat myself a few seconds later when I realized that was only the beginning chapter of an epic quest. I bought the game before the weekend was over.
