I usually don't watch anime, but about 2 weeks ago I just start watching random anime and none of them really stuck. I've read most of part 1 but I never finished it. I never spoiled myself to the story but I figure
Johnathan beats Dio and he somehow comes back
. I decide to start with part 3 because, I see that's where I read stands began at. HOLY SHIT, this is amazing. Outside of a very little amount of some loli shit, I loved everything about this anime. The story is interesting, every main character is interesting, the enemies are funny, have interesting powers, and are threatening. It didn't get stale, because it doesn't follow the trends of other shounens where the only relevant good guy ends up being the main character, its clear from the beginning that Jotaro is the strongest but winning in this series is not always by pure strength.
Outside of
Dio
it seems like it was pretty formulaic. 1. Mysterious stand user shows up, usually hidden among the crowd 2. Stand user seems to overwhelm the Joestar squad
Unless its Jotaro
3. At the last minute, when the Joestar crew member looks like they are about to lose, at the last minute the Joestar gang member smiles and completely outsmarts his opponent. Even though I knew it was going to follow that formula, I always was wondering how in the hell are they going to get out of this one. The characters, their designs, their poses, were all great, I can't think of any lows. It even gets away with over explaining because the pace is really good. I definitely have to finish part 1 and read the rest of the series.

Jotaro is one of the feew cool guy manga/anime character who was actually cool.

Love Jojo but you really shouldn't skim on the earlier pats. Part 1 isn't anything special but part 2 is amazing. Can't wait till the best part
part 4
gets animated though.

Part 2> Part 3?

YES! YES! YES! Oh my gawd.

Part 2 has one of the best protagonists (Joseph, Jotaro's uncle from Part 3), and some truly great villains, where each one and their battle is memorable. It's also much better paced, because they don't use the Stand User of the Week formula, and all the villains feel well developed.

I want to get into Jojo so badly. Since it's hard for me to get my hands on the manga, I was thinking about giving the show a shot. The only reason I haven't started it yet is because I don't want to be disappointed by a bad anime adaptation.

It's a fantastic adaptation. Parts 1 and 2 are hampered by a lower budget but make it up with sheer style, ridiculousness, and stellar voice acting. Part 3 had a noticeable animation bump.

Part 2> Part 3?

Part 2 is a lot more creative than Part 3. As you mentioned Part 3 is very formulaic, but still strong because it introduces stands. Part 2 survives on Joseph's creativity in battle alone.

Part 4 is the creativity of Part 2 plus the awesome stand powers of Part 3 plus slice of life. Its basically the best thing ever.

Its not bad by any means, but Part 1 and 2 are very static in comparison to other anime.

If you love the characters outsmarting each other, then you'll love part 2. The fights are pretty much determined by who can outsmart the other first, Plus Part 2 Joseph is the best Jojo.

That being said Stardust Crusaders is a fucking masterpiece. It's clear that ever new enemy is the new "stand user of the week," which is an archetype seen in the enemies in other shonen anime, but Stardust Crusaders does it differently. Even though Jotaro and company are facing a new enemy on nearly a daily basis, every enemy has something about them that, like you said OP, makes them funny or interesting (in terms of their stand powers). Most importantly though, the quest is ever present in the back of the viewer's/reader's mind with every new enemy the Crusaders face. Dio is always there in the background, looming and ever present, but so far away; even when we cut away to a scene with Dio and his henchmen his face is obscured to keep the audience in the dark. It isn't until the final showdown in the end where the anticipation finally pays off:
Dio is finally revealed in the flesh and we learn the secret of his stand. The final battle the ensues is monumental, and in my opinion, probably the most iconic battle in the shonen genre.

Glad that you liked Stardust Crusaders OP, I'm curious though: how did you feel about Jotaro from the beginning compared to once you finished the show?

I think his voice actor helped alot, but I always liked Jotaro the most throughout the series. He seemed more of an asshole at first but his character works very well, especially with the other characters he travels with

It will be a while before this happens, but I'm looking forward to Part VI: Stone Ocean to be adapted, just so my favourite character (Jotaro Kujo) can kick some ass for the first time in an animated adaptation.

I watched all of it and really liked it.
What blew my mind, though, was (final few episodes spoilers)
how the 2nd opening of Stardust Crusaders predicts the death/near death of the whole cast

great manga and great adaptation, but my fave will always be part IV: Diamond is Unbreakable. Best villain and a truly amazing array of stands, both villainous or heroic. Hopefully it gets adapted one day

I've recently finished watching the anime (parts 1-3).

Joseph is a much better Jojo than Jotaro, besides that I can't directly compare Battle Tendency with Stardust Crusaders. I liked the multitude of characters with unique stands from part 3 a lot, their designs, them traveling the world, and the party format. From part 2 it was mainly the protagonist as well as the general plot format. I'll also take either Zeppeli over Polnareff.
I hated Jotaro at the start but he warmed up to me by the end. It's just that with his design you would expect him to be a better character.

Now I'm not sure if I can wait for the unconfirmed Diamond is Unbreakable anime or if I'll read the manga. Especially since I want to play All Stars Battle with minimum spoilers.

Watch the previous parts man, you missed out on the best
Anime
Joestar. And then join us in the torturous wait for Duwang is not crash.

READ IT!

JUST READ IT!

MAKE YOUR DIAMONDS COME TRUE!

For reals though, the anime might take a while to be made. Jojo takes a whole different turn with Part 4 onwards regarding stands and battle and pretty much everything. Huge art style difference too.

That sounds cool, though that's still kind of what happened concerning battles going from parts 1 and 2 to 3.

I didn't read part 3 in anticipation of the anime. I'll try to do the same for 4.

You mean Jolyne yeah? Jotaro has kind of been adapted, hence the thread.

In a way yeah, I can't say much without spoiling but let's just say that Stands get a lot more creative in ways which we never expected in Part 3.

Thanks to DavidPro, Jojo's is one of the few series where having read the manga makes you even more excited for the anime.

Everybody should read Diamond is Unbreakable just to see a grown ass man punch a kid over Rock Paper Scissors

Damn straight. Josuke being left out of the rest of Jojo story line was a crime. Dude deserved a lot more spotlight.

Why do I always feel like I'm the only person that liked Part 1? It's worth it just for Dio's god tier douchebaggery alone. Just watch all of it OP Dio's voice actor is all kinds of evil cheese filled epic.

IMO Stardust Crusaders is by far the worst Jojo part of the new anime. Both Darbys and Vanilla Ice were great but other enemies were really not that interesting. The main cast wasn't my to my liking either aside from Joseph and Avdol. Way too much screen time for Polnareff to the point where it felt like it should be named Polnareffs Bizarre Adventure rather than Jojos. Also ending was super anticlimatic and wasn't satisfying at all. Atleast the time stop effect was super good.

OP should really check Phantom Blood and especially Battle Tendency which are both really good.

Aw man, OP, I just finished part 3 a few weeks ago myself and Jojo really did some good in my life. It definitely picks up at the end, and the final fight imo is so, so good. I've been reading part 4 but I keep forgetting about going back into it.

Seriously though, part 2 is great, you should really watch it. I think the characters as a whole work better with each other. I even think part 1 is pretty good, if at least for the first three episodes and the last two.

I watched all of it and really liked it.

Ah fuck, that opening was so good. All the openings are absolutely amazing, and I never skipped one, which is rare for when I watch anime. That final version of the opening, though, really blew me away.

Personally I love all of JoJo. Certainly there are weaker parts but overall it tends to be a nice change of pace from most of anime today. Part 1 mostly gets shit because JoJo is so forgettable but the rest of the cast is pretty amazing with Dio clearly stealing the show.

I just started stardust crusaders but it's got a lot to live up to regarding the rest of the series

It has the weakest opening of the 3, the protagonist is probably better than Jonathan but nothing like Joseph

I also loved tainted blood. Supreme shithead Dio, the first introduction of Hamon, all good stuff

The show is good, but I am not as big of a fan off it as others. Stylistically it's great but they took a very "unique" approach in regards to animating the show which made the show feel a lot more humorous than it was suppose to be at times. Some scenes that were 100% serious in the manga felt like a joke in the anime. I think the 1993 OVA was a better adaptation but this new one is still good as well.

Yare yare wat?

In terms of adaptation the new anime is panel to panel even with the tone of events. The 1993 OVA was way too serious and lost what made Jojo so bizarre, but for it's time and there being no other adaptation it was good enough I suppose.

I think them doing a panel to panel adaption is why it felt so wonky to me. No other anime which is an adaptation of manga does a 1:1 adaptation like that. It's a different medium and should be treated as such. The original ova was a bit too serious but honestly it felt a lot closer in tone to what I read in the manga. The new anime takes the humor too far and ruins a lot of the seriousness that the manga had.

I don't know what region you're in but Viz now has the official translations for JJBA Part 1 and 2 available for commercial release.
Part 1

Part 2

Pet Shop is also one of the better stand fights in Stardust Crusaders, probably my favorite. Another good one was Steely Dan only because of the stomping the guy got, I'm still convinced he got ORA'd the longest in Stardust Crusaders.

It's a great adaption. The first season doesn't have much animation but it still has a ton of style and the cast is great. Second season (stardust crusaders) got a big bump in quality.

Man....get to part 2!! Joseph is dope
You'll probably get a kick out of his characterization in his younger days since you've already experienced Old Joseph.

You mean Jolyne yeah? Jotaro has kind of been adapted, hence the thread.
Thank you for correcting me. Yeah, Jolyne is definitely the more underrated JoJo protagonist in the series, but with the promise of all the parts being adapted, I'm looking forward to see Part VI the most.

Is part 1 a better anime than manga? I'm still reading it (slowly), and I'm almost done. I'm at the part where
Zepelli dies
. But sometimes it seems like a chore to read.

I just watched the 1993 ova to compare. I like it for being an adaptation, but I prefer the anime/manga story. I really like the atmosphere in that one

I enjoyed the anime but I believe it's condensed in the anime to fit into 12 episodes, so it probably feels like less of a chore than reading the manga.

I never read the manga but I enjoyed Part 1 immensely. I honestly get a kick out of Dio's antics in Phantom Blood and he's voiced perfectly. It's really only 2 "bad" episodes at most.

Yeah I would agree.

Dio alone is worth part 1, and the VA on the anime really helps selling his action.

Part 1 and 2 are amazing, Part 3 is okay, but it's one of my least favorite parts, my manga ranking so far are:

4 = 7 > 2 > 1 > 6 > 3 > 5

It should be obvious that I can't wait for Part 4 to get animated.

But yeah.... go watch Part 1 and 2.

As good as Part 2 was I missed Dio, but other than that Part 2 was great. Phantom Blood just has a different kind of pacing, but there's nothing wrong with it. What else has Koyasu done that's as good as Dio?

Didn't they fix a lot of animation quirks for the blurays?

It being condensed is sadly it's biggest flaw. But if there was a full series in that style I'd be heaven. Maybe it's because I read Jojo way before the new anime came out so I guess my view on how the tone should be is a bit different than most peoples, but when I watch the OVA a while back it honestly was exactly how I pictured the manga would be in animated form. The 2001 OVA is trash though.

I missed DIO more in Part 3 than I did in Part 2, Joseph kept me entertained through all of Part 2, while in Part 3 I kept hoping for DIO to reappear.

Even giorno Giovanna arc is not BAD BEYOND REDEMPTION, it's simply inferior jojo arc.. But after that, joline arc kicks in........
