LttP - Kingdom Hearts

I just picked up Kingdom Hearts because it's dirt cheap (I traded an old DVD for it), everyone seems to love this game and, if I love it too, there's a sequel coming in just a few months. I'm really enjoying the atmosphere and the story - it's one of the only games I have ever played that has genuinly good voice acting that actually adds to the experiece - but I'm already tired of the random battles. I don't have any time to think or try to decide what I'm supposed to do next. I'm only in the first real world - Alice in Wonderland - and have been stuck here for far longer than I should have simply because enemies are constantly attacking me.

It's so annoying that it almost seems like I'm doing something wrong. I have to ask what will probably be seen as a stupid question - is there a way to stop this constant swarm? If not, does it at least lessen as the game goes on? And if neither of those are the case, do you think it's in my best interest to continue playing? In other words, is the story so darn good that I will laugh that this terrible combat system almost made me quit playing only a few hours in?

No. The story is completely forgettable. The Alice in Wonderland portion IS easily one of the worst the game has to offer though.

I enjoyed the story. The ending I feel is one of the besting endings this gen, though that seems to be because it seems most games don't have much of an ending, so this really stood out. The ending made me kind of sad. It really made the wait for KH2 more painful.

I used to think KH was an alright game with level design problems and a good story. Then I played KH2 and now I just think KH1 was 100% crap besides having an awesome ending :P

KH -> KH2 is like the jump from ZoE->ZoE2 except that KH1 was much worse than ZoE1 and KH2 is not quite as awesome as ZoE2.

Wonderland was my favorite world; it was really the only one that didn't involve just walking around and fighting stuff :P. It had a maze / puzzle element to it.

But, regardless of one's opinion of Wonderland, I wouldn't say the game changes substantially from where you are now, honestly; the rest of the game is pretty similar to what you've already seen. I wouldn't say the story really takes off, and the combat remains pretty consistent ("button-mash through swarms of enemies") through the whole game. Sorry :\

I've been playing this the past couple days. My opinions on the worlds I've been in so far:

That Part When You Make Your Sora Duder: Pretty awesome.
Destiny Island: SUCKED, turned me off the game the first time I played it some years back.
Traverse Town: Very cool.
Gummi Ship: Benign, but awful.
Wonderland: Some nice areas, visually. Annoying to play through.
Lame.
Coliseum: Ho hum. Not good or bad (so far. I am aware I come back here).
Deep Jungle: Visually appealing. At first I thought the density of the jungle would make it difficult to navigate, but the areas were so small that this wasn't a problem. Lots of backtracking made this area go on for a bit too long, but overall I enjoyed it.
100 Acre Wood: Seemed kind of pointless, but I know I come back here. They fucked up Pooh's voice.
Agrabah: Seemed pretty cool. I'm still on this one

Judging by my reactions, how will I like the rest of the game? What other worlds that I will go to suck ass?

The story primarily exists in the Newbie island and Hollow Bastion. The 30-40 hours in between is pure Disney wankery and spectacularly poor level layouts. The king-sized bosses at least provide something to marvel over during that long drought.

the big bright spot of this game is it's combat. not that it's perticularly deep or anything, but it is realtime. though, Donald and Goofy can be frustrating if you give them too much freedom. healing at the slightest damage, dying, etc.

if you're a fan Dynasty Warrior-type games, and Disney movies, and Square games you WILL love Kingdom Hearts regardless of it's faults.

PLAY it! NOW!

I thought it started getting better after Deep Jungle. Agrabah on is pretty good, though all Disney worlds (ESPECIALLY Monstro) suffer from questionable design and too damn many enemies, to say the least. Hollow Bastion is pretty awesome though, and the main story is decent, but nothing special. It's worth sticking with, I'd say.

If not for the fact that KH2 seems to rely on it, I'd recommend staying FAR away from the borefest that is Chain of Memories. Tried getting back into it recently, and got fed up after Traverse Town. Read a plot faq.

The game's worlds get better and better the more you play it. That's how it felt to me, anyway. I thought it was merely okay until about Agrabah then got hooked.

The voice acting is so great and it really enhances the story. And Hollow Bastion does rock.

I am also late to this party, and I must say that the game isn't as good as it should have been...

Most of the time I am left wondering where I should go next. Especially in
Deep Jungle, where I have no idea where to go after the guy shot the ape Kurcheck (I'm playing the Japanese version, don't know how to spell his name... I am talking about the leader of the ape tribe)
.

But yeah the voice acting is good. I am looking forward to finishing this game as soon as I can, simply because I am not 100% enjoying it. It has its good moments, but I really want to get it over and done with ASAP and move on to my next game. And oh yeah, I am playing this because KH2 looks awesome, and I will get that after I beat this one first.

So how long does KH last? 40 hours or so?

KH had so much going for it, the wealth of characters from Square and Disney, great development house, big budget, and then it proceeds to throw it all away on some very basic mistakes. Bad camera, the Gummi Ship, Back tracking, lack of direction and writing,
Kingdom Hearts is LIGHT!!! What the..???
. A shame. Such a shame.

...no, it's not ^^; Honestly I think most people just didn't get the plot of KH since it was kind of vague and not your standard tale.

I'm only in the first real world - Alice in Wonderland - and have been stuck here for far longer than I should have simply because enemies are constantly attacking me.

The 4 times I've tried to get into Kingdom Hearts it's always been the AiW level that just burns me out. A real showcase of poor level design.

I paid full price for it and didn't get past the Hercules part (after Wonderland). I still have it and wish I could finish it someday because KH2 looks awesome, but I have much more important games in my backlog and I'm not touching those either... my life sucks.

I didn't play any of the Hercules battles until I was at the end of the game and already around level 70. Makes them much easier.
