After hearing mixed feelings on the movie since it came out and after going through the Cruise Missile thread, I decided to finally give Oblivion a chance, and long story short: I fucking loved it.

Does it have it's faults? For sure, some things are predictable and there are a few plot holes, but they never really bring down the overall movie for me. Visuals I'll skip over since there isn't much to say about them aside from being bloody fantastic, the soundtrack is great too.
A lot of people will complain that it goes on for too long even though I felt like more things could have been expanded upon a bit, however I really wasn't expecting to enjoy the movie as much as I did. Though I do have a bias towards movies/shows that
use classic poetry or just poetry in general as an ending note
.

What did everyone else think of it?

I have a feeling that the Tron Legacy and Oblivion director is one of best visually directors right now. I cant wait for his upcoming movie.

This movie was an utterly forgettable experience for me which left no real impression. It was out of my mind pretty much the moment I stepped out of the theater.

Honestly one of my favorite scifi movies in recent memory. I love the setting and the plot, while pretty predictable, is enough of a movement away from the typical "us vs. them" that it feels fresh.

Loved it, an homage to the entire scifi genre. Even had a Fallout reference in there!

I think it helped that i knew absolutely nothing about it before seeing it.

I didn't think the plot was so predictable. I mean I knew something was wrong, but I didn't know what. I thought it was
humans exploiting TC and lying to him, rather than a computer/alien

Maybe I'm just stupid lol

I watched this movie on a flight and was pleasantly surprised.

Too bad it copies its plot from the much better
Moon
.

I loved this damn movie. Audio and visuals were best in class. I like that the Blu-Ray has a version of the movie with an isolated score so I can listen to M83.

Don't let Kosinski write anything, though.

I like it. it's not the best movie but it has some great set pieces and design. and the Cruise Missile is wonderful even in a mediocre movie.

i liked it but it had too many twists, by the last third of the movie you're trying to compile a mental list of all the sci fi twists it does

You saw it as an homage, but I saw it as very derivative/copycat of other sci-fi movies. I guess it's a fine line. Loved the visuals, though.

I don't understand people who accuse the movie of lacking originality, when it's the only big-budget alien invasion movie I can remember where
you never get to see what the aliens look like.
Which is what I think would actually happen in real life. It helps give the film this eerie, desolate quality that I love.

Felt a
hell of a lot like Moon,
(minor spoiler) but visually and aesthetically it was pretty cool, so I liked it.

I was expecting more, so kinda forgettable.

I assumed it was adapted from a book but it was just from an unfinished graphic novel. Perhaps that's why it feels like there should have been more and not just twisty. It was a decent idea that needed more depth.

I really hope that that old news about Tom Cruise starring in the Hollywood adaptation of Japanese OVA Yukikaze will end up being true.

He's awesome for pushing good quality SF films.

For all of its faults, it delivers in two very important areas:
The soundtrack and cinematography are fantastic.
Movie is full of incredible shots.

Felt like I had seen the film before.
I don't know why.
Just something about it.
Saw the twist when he's in that dessert area and sees someone coming the second he saw the other ship.
You know the one.
Not a great film but not exactly a bad one.

Utter mediocrity. It looked pretty, tho. I'll just quote myself from the OT:

Disclaimer: I was completely uninvested in Oblivion and only saw the first trailer before the movie. I came into the theatre with no expectations at all. That said...

THIS MOVIE GAVE ME CANCER

This is the first time in years I've wanted to walk away from the cinema. It's just as simple as that. The first half of the movie is actually pretty solid and competent, even if it's nothing spectacular, but everything crumbles right after Cruise
visits his cabin
. By the time Kurylenko shows up the film crashes right into the ground. It goes from fun sci-fi flick to a straight collection of tropes barely held together with the thinnest plot-tape I've ever seen.

It is just a collection of set pieces and clichés from a thousand flicks before, all of them intertwined to create a "new" movie. There are bits of The Matrix, ID4 and countless others all over the place, but the worst part is that those scenes are so damn lazily written and so poorly directed that you can help but notice how goddamned amateur the script is. Everything is just so trite and derivative. The final 30 minutes or so are just so goddamned poor.

On top of that, Oblivion may be the one of the most inadvertently sexist movies in recent times. Kurylenko sole role is that of a walking
McGuffin
, whereas Andrea Riseborough (the only actor who didn't phone it in... even if at the end of the movie
is barely an automaton
) only exists to look pretty for the camera. It's seriously ridiculous and at points disconcerting how useless are all the female characters in Oblivion.

On a more technical level, Oblivion is almost as barren as the Earth it depicts. The aesthetics are interesting at first, but the camera work is completely unimaginative and pedestrian, while the soundtrack is every bit as derivative as the rest of the film. Unremarkable at best. The song after the credits was the only decent part, and I can't even remember much of it.

Verdict: Save your sci-fi monies for Elysium.

I prolly fucked up the verdict, but I stand by my opinion.
