LTTP: Resident Evil 0

In an attempt to clear out my backlog of games from the previous generation, and because watching clips of Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles sort of got me excited (along with watching a ton of Resident Evil walkthrough commentary on youtube), I decided to start and hopefully finish Resident Evil 0.

I bought it like 2-3 years ago when a local video rental store was closing down, and didn't touch it at all. I'd always been a little apprehensive about playing RE0, as I generally dislike scary moody sound design (they scare me!), plus I read a lot of people saying that they disliked the game a lot.

The game can be scary at times, but I think that watching those youtube commentary walkthroughs helped me pacify a lot of the anxiety I had around playing the game. Plus, I'm playing on easy :P
shut up
.

So yeah, as for progress, I've gotten to the mansion training facility... and the room with the chess pieces is killing me :(

I guess I should be quicker on my feet :S

If anyone wants to share their opinion about RE0, please feel free to do so, but can we keep this thread spoiler free? :<

Probably the only mainline RE that I couldn't finish. I didn't dig the "coop" aspect of the game, it wasn't scary and I don't understand why they needed to retcon the RE universe like that. They removed the item box and replaced with *drum roll, please* backtracking. Lack of ammo was somewhat frustrating, too.

It also doesn't help that the REmake is fuckawesome.

Edited to add more whining :lol

Never beat it either. I think I stopped shortly after the second disc.

I was frustrated by the game's difficulty. Should've played on Easy.

I played it on easy!!!!!! but i didn't really like it.

Good game, but of all the traditional Resi games it's the weakest link. The train part of the game is very refreshing and gives the game a new edge, but when you reach the Training Facility it gets a bit difficult.

That's because of the zapping system. It's a cool idea and there are a few puzzles in the game that makes it worthwhile, but especialy in the final part of the game it gets kind of hard to manage, especialy due to the first time of "no Item boxes" in the game. And dumping all your stuff just where you want it. At first no Itembox sounds great, but along the way you kind of want it back.

Finally, the enemies. I hate the Leech Zombies. Damn hardheaded bastards.

I bought it when it first came out and beat it pretty fast afterwards. I'm an RE nut so even thought I didn't like it as much as others I still thought it was good.

The forced buddy can be annoying at times but overall I thought the game was pretty good. Those leech monsters can are some the most annoying creatures in the RE universe though. Especially the one when you first get to the training facility. I wanted to throw the controller at the TV!

I didn't think the game was very scary, especially compared to REmake.

Game was fun but I dislike it because they tried to squeeze a mixture of new story before the events of the very first game, and well, ruin it tbh.

love it, easily top 3 in my RE best of list.

ive played through it a bunch of times on various difficulties. the mini game you unlock after is a lot of fun too.

its also a great looking game.

if the chess room is giving you problems, wait until you get to the box puzzle later. ive done it a bunch of times and it still confuses me every time (im terrible at puzzles).

aauurrgh

game disc read error :( stupid second-hand scratches. Oh well, I'll get it polished later.
it stopped during the flashback explanation about whatshisface's past... like, at the very beginning of it :S

REmake was harder

No. I managed to beat REmake invisible mode, but I stoped playing RE 0 on pro difficulty because it's was just frustrating.

RE 0 it's less scary, atmospheric, polished than REmake, and the partner zapping system it's not used enough an much less at it's full potential, even so, game it's pretty good and some of the new mechanics were actually a good idea and refreshing.

and the RE trolls come out of the woodwork for the RE0 thread.

predicable GAF, and tiresome.

What post in this thread is a troll of RE? I don't see any. There are people posting which game they liked and didn't. The OP said feel free to post opinions ... right?

The item box is basically backtracking as well. At least with item drops you can choose where they are stored to make backtracking go faster. Item drops is not a perfect solution, but I'm glad they at least tried to fix what I consider to be one of the major gripes with the oldschool RE games, which are the items boxes.

I personally thought was RE0 was rather good. I enjoyed REmake a lot more, but RE0 is fun and has some great areas (I love the train at the start of the game).

This is the first Resident Evil game I ever played, I got as far as getting a lift to work outside the front of the mansion then got bored/lost/frustrated. Aside from RE4, it is the only RE game I've ever played. I'll try it again someday and try and find out where the hell I am in gamefaqs.

Coming from a huge RE fan this is one of if not the worst RE games in the mainline series...

The story took some truly dumb turns with the singing leach man...the no box thing really sucked after you had to backtrack if you left something somewhere, and the partnet system felt gimmicky has hell.

THIS is the point where I felt the RE gameplay became tired

If you are ever low or run out of ammo in an RE game you have no right to post opinions of the games.

My only advise for those playing Resident Evil Zero, especially if you want to avoid frustration; never forget the hookshot. Seriously...

Coming off remake, Zero felt inferior in almost every aspect, obviously the game didn't quite have the same visual aspect but outside a lot more motion added to the backdrops the models, design and colours made it much less visually appealing in my opinion. There are sections where the game is flat out amazing (Thinking train and near the end of the game in the
facility
but there's a lot of 'dead space')

My recent thoughts from the pre-RE5 playthrough thread:

Resident Evil Zero On Gamecube The Wii Wouldn't Run it ='(
Play Time: Not Given (wtf?) as primarily Billy

I only played Resident Evil Zero once before this and that was in February 2003, when the game first released. Heck, the game still had the Electronics Boutique sticker on it for $109.95 when it first released here. :lol To be honest, RE Zero left a very foul aftertaste in my mouth when I first played it, but playing through it again, it's actually got a lot of features that I really enjoyed. Partner zapping was a nice feature, and it surprisingly wasn't that jarring when characters switched for a disc based game. I was impressed. The fact that you could drop any items and find them in the exact same place no matter where you were at the time was also a very nice feature. The removal of item boxes was not a huge gripe with me, but it certainly made the weapons seem stackable, in that you would have to "upgrade" from a pistol to a shotgun instead of keeping both. That and the inventory being so small really raised issues for me but also made me realise that this game is the epitome of the SURVIVAL part of the genre. You really felt like you needed to survive.

That being said, the BOWs were awesome in this game. I remember reading that Minami wanted to have a more "organic" feel for the enemies in this game, and in that regard he succeeded. Some of the designs weren't as, say, exciting as other enemies in the series, but the Monkies, Centipedes, Grasshopper things and the Leeches were all good enemies, but the Frogs were just annoying (but I wish they kept them in the series in some form).

The puzzles in RE Zero were also top notch. Some of them were really intense and you felt like you were actually thinking about them, and there was a huge sense of accomplishment when you solved them. I think RE Zero has some of my most favourite puzzles in the series (seriously >_>)

I really liked the idea of the "prototype" tyrant that Rebecca fights in the game, though I didn't quite feel it was a prototype because it was nearly as deadly. Perhaps if it had some major design flaw (exposed vital organs was in the final, remember >_>) that made it an easier boss just for story reasons and it would've felt like more of a prototype. Either way, I liked that we were seeing that even Umbrella made mistakes with their controlled experiments.

High Points:
  • Billy Coen <3
  • Animal + Torches Puzzle
  • Lurkers are quite possibly the coolest enemies better
  • Visiting RE2 areas in that awesome REmake style
Low Points:
  • RE2 areas have yet to be made into an awesome remake =(
  • Leech Zombies really sapped supplies when you didn't want them to
  • The crate and grate puzzle really stumped me for some reason
  • Having to haul that fucking hookshot around the place
  • Leech Hunter is the worst game mode ever

(My) Unanswered Questions / Discussion Starters: Why don't we ever hear of any of Rebecca's exploits in the original Resident Evil? Also, is there any mention of Billy Coen outside of this game?
