Life of Pi by Yam Patel. Rumored to be working with Disney to create a full CG adaptation of the novel. Expected release 2005. This is somewhat of a new direction for the writer/director. Thoughts?

Welcome to 1-2 years ago. ;)

Sorry, this was announced ages ago.

Can't say I care as the book doesn't sound all that interesting to me.

I loved the book. Looking forward to the movie. I suppose CG isn't a bad way to do it,
as training a tiger to do the things Richard Parker does in the book sounds like it'd be really, really tough...

I haven't heard anything further on this project in at least six months when Shyamalan reiterated that he was still working on it. Basically, no matter what it sure as hell won't be showing up in 2005, especially if its CG.

Shyamalan shouldn't even make full movies anymore... just make a beginning, let it run for 10min with you thinking it's about one thing... then make an ending that's another 10min that shows you something else was really going on.

That's it.

At least he's gonna have a story that doesn't entirely revolve around the ending...

wait nevermind.

One thing all you haters should consider is that this'll be the first time Shyamalan's directing a movie he didn't write. It's Yann Martel's story, not M. Night Shyamalan's, unlike The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village.

That's what worries us. We didn't mind it that much when he botched his own stories. I don't think we'd mind if he kept it at that. :p

Serioulsy - wtf is with this guy. Can't he atleast TRY and do a movie without a "ending so twisted and shocking it will shock you"?

Loved the book - but I see this coming out on film as a big mess.

He didn't "botch" his own stories -- they're on film as he wanted them. I honestly don't think he's going to dramatically CHANGE the story for Life of Pi. I can't think why he'd do it, especially since the book is so popular.

It's because he thinks it would be a good trick to pull on you.

Shyamalan: "Man, I can't believe Steve Meister actually though I wouldn't fuck this up! Haha!"

First tragedy, then farce.
Ironically the only movie of his I liked at all was Unbreakable.. which I think most people hated.

I figured the sixth sense out (the fade away shot on his bed I thought made it pretty clear what happened).. signs played out like a frat daddy showed up drunk to his Philosophy 301 class ONCE and then wrote a screen play.. and the village was just.. well.. stupid.

I enjoyed all his movies somewhat, Unbreakable the most (as one of the best superhero films ever), but The Village just sucked.

The Shyamalan hate must end.

Indeed. People bitch that movies lack surprise and attempts at unconventional plots, Shyamamamlan gives them something that provides both those qualities and people STILL complain

But the blind girl was nice. Other than that, yeah.

Gah. So like 2-3 years ago Shymalan was awesome and everyone loved his movies, couldn't wait for them to come out, etc.

Now it's the hip thing to hate on him like he's never made a good movie because some people didn't like The Village. Cry me a river.

Mind numbingly dumb surprises don't automatically make the movie chic and edgy.

Despite what people say about his screen writing, Shyamalan is still a great director. Maybe if people spent less time trying to outsmart him and just watch the movies they would see that.

Spielberg and Lucas didn't approach him about doing Indiana Jones 4 without a reason.

Maybe he should make a movie where the twist was that there was no twist, I would be got offguard. M Night is not original anymore. He had one really cool idea where people thought that the twist was awesome, but now hes just banking on the same plot device over and over again. Thats not different, thats Linkin Park.

i think at the end of this movie, a chubby checker recording (you know the one) should play and everyone will do the twist.

By this logic, all directors that use gimmicks particular to them or personal staples in their movies are "Linkin Park"

For some reason, I read it as Pu Yi (The last Chinese emperor) and actually gasped. Then saw the talk of tigers and didn't care anymore.

why those were ther worst parts of the village;)

EDIT: I too liked unbreakable the best.
The village didn't have to be a bad movie, a lot of it wasn't he made one or two critical errors and blew his load before he got to the editing room where he just said "fuck i just want to sleep".

Mike works had a little write up that used only the existing scenes from village in a different order and it would have been a much better movie.

Just wrote my English ISU Essay on this book. 3300 words of beauty. :lol

EDIT: I'm hoping the crappiness of this didn't work it's way into my essay... I was in such a bad mood :lol
"“Thousand Acres” is an attempt by director Jocelyn Moorhouse at modernizing the classic play King Lear originally created by William Shakespeare. While some may note that watching this film is akin to having one’s eyes pulled out or that in many ways it is the bastard son of the original, others will undoubtedly mention that it has an impeccable ability to make one descend into madness. That’s not to say that it disowns and proceeds to banish the original; I’m sure it’s quite the contrary as the play banishes this movie from the kingdom of quality."

heh, I not fond of any of his films with the exception of signs. I thought signs was extremely well done. I've watched so many horror films and never been scared by them. Signs at least gave me a unnerving feeling. I just found Sixth Sense and Unbreakable boring and this is from someone who thinks Meet Joe Black was an excellent film.
