MacBook Pro (Retina 2014) connected to Wi-Fi but no internet access

Hi,

A neighbor has a MacBook Pro (Retina mid-2014) that connects to their Wi-Fi network, but it does not get Internet access. Other devices on the same network, including Windows 10 and 11 laptops, Android phones, and iPhones, are both connecting to WiFi and getting Internet access, thus working normally.

What has been tried so far:
  • Forgot the Wi-Fi network and reconnected
  • Renewed DHCP lease
  • Manually set DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
I have also verified that the are no blocks in the router for the MacBook Pro in any way.
None of these steps fixed the issue. The MacBook Pro shows it is connected to Wi-Fi, but browsers and apps cannot access the internet.

According to the neighbor, it just stopped working after updating Firefox.

Looking for suggestions on what to try next.

Try creating a new connection(network location). I dont remember how on a mac but that helps narrow things down, also make sure date and time are correct in settings.

Id also suggest you call their support.

I haven created a new connection in the sense I think you mean (creating a new wifi connection while the old is still there) but I deleted the one I used, then connected again.

Does it work if you connect it to your WiFi?

Will have to see if I can borrow the computer a few hours to test later, but it didn't work to access Internet when my neighbor tried the iPhone as a hotspot.

Sometimes mac has a fit and doesn't want to connect even though it says it is. Tell him to forget the network and enter in the information again. Also do a restart. If that doesn't work, try safari and see if it's a browser issue

I would try what Mistake suggested above. If that doesn't work you could try running
Code:
traceroute google.com
in the terminal and see if any errors show up there.

Update your Mac, try airdrop really quick if you can, and connect to bluetooth with something to make sure all the radios are working.

Next, if you are logged into this mac with your apple account and you have a newer mac device and you are hiding your IP make sure that model supports that functionality (the macbook pro 2014 does NOT support apples iCloud private relay).

After all of THAT, I would try to tether to a phone if you can to determine if you can get internet access at all on the device. Remember to support older wifi bands (your phone may be set up to ONLY support newer secure wifi bands).

If that works, then I would say that its the router configration/wifi band that is being used. Head to a local store or amazon and buy a cheap wifi dongle.

This is the step I was referring to, just to make sure we are on the same page.

This used to (still does) happen to older Macs sometimes and several different things would fix them, but for really old ones some people were just out of luck.

If you do give them a call and they can't resolve, I happen to have a 2018 MacBook pro that is not being used and is in excellent shape to sell 😉

Did she install a version of Firefox that's compatible with that Mac? I believe Mozilla offers extended support versions of Firefox for older versions of MacOS but not sure if they are all fully compatible with Intel Macs.
