Vindication...sweet.
Shoji Kawamori's 4-part epic series arrives on a 2-DVD box set this Tuesday (6/14). I never got around to finishing the series, so I'll get down with this.

Time to soar high with Isamu and Guld once again. Woo! :)

Awesome, I've yet to own this on DVD so I'll gladly pick it up. Surprised the cover doesnt say, "From the director of Cowboy Bebop!" or some such.

I remember Hito saying there were sound issues on one version of the Vol.2 (eps 3/4) disc on some runs... I wonder if the fixed version will make this set, or if it'll be the bad one?

*yawn*

I hate rehashes. Already got my original 2 discs signed by the Japanese VAs for Isamu and Myung. If this came with the movie that'd be a different story.

It *is* my favorite film of all time though, so I may just get them again on principle alone.

I love my original 2 DVDs. First DVD purchase I made even.

Nothing new about this release so I'll stick with my set. If this one was simply an extended version that included those few scenes from the movie that weren't in the OVA then I might have considered picking it up. That scene with Sharon flying around Macross City dropping feathers everywhere was mindblowing.

Don't get me started. If there was EVER a film that needs to be seen on a giant digital projection screen it's this one. There is no other film in the history of celluloid that can touch Mac+...NONE(and I'm including every hollywood and foreign film combined here).

Again....don't me started on Mac+

There were two pressings of the Macross Plus OVA by Manga Entertainment. The first had a missing center channel on the english dub track on both volumes and mistimed subs on the second volume(and maybe some other stuff I forgot). These were fixed a year later but the first pressing is still widely in circulation, and the only way you can tell if you got the fixed version is if it says something like "Macross Plus Volume 2 (Episodes 3+4)" instead of "Macross Plus Vol. 2".

I'll be picking up this set if only because it'll probably be the only guaranteed way to get the fixed versions... and AnimeNation screwed me with a bad copy of Vol 2.

Those bastards at Manga... nevermind about the guaranteed part. The box I picked up today included a broken vol 1 judging by the top label, although I've yet to confirm it. At least it had the fixed vol 2 so now I'm set.

I'm glad to not be the only one that liked the movie version better. I thought I was crazy but some of the parts added made it just that much better and seemed to make more sense cut together the way it was.

I thought the way the movie put Isamu in the hospital was great until I saw the OVA version and found out there was a whole other story that was left out.. one that had Guld taking very deliberate and calculated steps to get rid of Isamu.

But looking back on it now, the restored relationship between Isamu and Guld is a lot more convincing when Guld only hurts Isamu in a fit of rage that was executed immediately by his VF... and not so convincing when Guld attempts first degree murder.

Does anyone know if the movie version DVD is good/quality? 5.1?

Macross Plus is fantastic. I think the OAV series is better than the movie simply for their cool cliff-hanger endings to each episode. This is also the first anime series I recommend to someone who doesn't know anything about anime because it's not really all that "Japanese" in story.

This is Manga entertainment. They'll fuck up the sound or video transfer for the first release as they always do, then they'll rerelease it with a sticker just to differentiate that it is the updates version.

I like Macross Plus and all, but c'mon.

I think what made Macross Plus for me at first was the music, which every Macross title is dedicated to at some degree. It was essentially Yoko Kanno's big break for US and I still stand by my analogy that she is much more famous in US than in Japan.

Other than that, it was the simple love triangle of Macross Plus that hooked me and it's characters, as well as my semi-love for flight. Defining moment was Isamu and Myung in the forest after he escapes from the hospital.. or the very start with them Isamu and Guld cycling down the hill for the glider with Myung watching - you knew you were watching something special after that. The OAV just had so many moments where you were like "whoa" throughout it and I think Shoji Kawamori has not done anything as grand since (we'll see how Aquarion turns out though).

The movie version is actually the way it was meant to be. Kawamori & co. planned the movie before the OVA was made.

From my understanding, the movie edition DVD is a direct transfer from the VHS version.....meaning the video quality isn't all that hot. :(

Sucks that Manga Ent. didn't included a remastered version of the movie edition with this OVA box set.

Opened the vol 1 that came with my set, and the disc is labeled as the Movie Edition in addition to being the first vol 1 pressing. Nice job, Manga. :p

Explain. So they include both the OVA and Movie version or is it just the movie version?

I don't remember which one I saw but I remember liking it a lot. I was really turned off by a lot of anime but Macross Plus was one that really restored my faith in it.

No, they just mixed up the label, unfortunately. I was kinda hoping it'd be an error in my favor when I first saw it.

And to be clear: All Manga did was take two copies of each respective volume off their shelf, put them in a box, then shrinkwrap it again. Fuckups ensue.

Now that's just lazy and sloppy on Manga's part.

But the versions included in this box set are the "fixed" versions, right? Meaning, both volumes are the "corrected" ones with the fixed audio and subtitle placements?

Oh well, I guess I'll still get this set at a fair price.

Isamu, what makes you like this movie so much?

Tell me

I have loved this film for 10 years now. Everything about it, to me at least, is absolutely FLAWLESS. I have seen just about every high profile anime film out there...from GitS to Mononoke to Akira to Cowboy Bebop The Movie...you name it. NONE of them, NONE...has measured up to the brilliance of Macross Plus. The story, the animation, the music, the action, the drama, the dogfights, the tension, the love triangle....It's just a beautiful collage of excellent film making.

There is no other film that has touched my soul like Mac+. Shoji Kawamori is God and Yoko Kanno is the queen on excellent anime soundtracks. I'm proud to have met them both, as well as the Japanese VAs for Isamu and Myung at AX. Hell, I even have home video footage of both of them doing live voice acting to a few parts of Mac+. Talk about something to treasure...

To say that I can't wait to get my front projector and watch this on a 100" screen, would an understatement.

isamu, you need help :lol

Manga did a recall of the original DVD pressing of Macross Plus. So that was another way to be absolutely sure you had the second pressing. But I imagine the recall offer expired long ago. I'm somewhat amazed there are still copies of that first pressing floating around. Reminds me of what happened when Manga released Macross Plus on laserdisc. They underestimated demand for the first volume (the LDs were released in four volumes) so they grossly overpressed the second. For years the second volume turned up in bargain bins everywhere while the other three were considerably harder to find.

No, it's the vol 1 that came with the Macross Plus box that I bought today.

Did some testing, and I'm not sure if the white label is even a valid indicator of what pressing you have. Both of my copies of Vol 2 have the same text on the inner ring of the DVD, and I couldn't really tell a significant difference in the center channel, despite one having the first pressing label and the one that came with the box having what I think is the second pressing label(although no parenthesis...). Inner ring text on the two copies of Vol 1 were clearly different, with the one packaged with the fixed label being in the style of both my vol 2 copies.

Never picked up the LD unfortunately :( Went from VHS straight to DVD.

I *do* have an LD of Flashback 2012 however :D

I was a huge fan of Macross Plus, but didn't know there was a movie. The only way I've ever seen it was the four episodes.

I have the OVAs in VHS, so this is perfect for me.

And I hate the editing and chronology in the movie version. OVAs all the way.

Watch the OVA first and then the movie, not the other way around. This is a movie I'll re-buy if they remaster it to BluRay or HD-DVD.

Has there been any news regarding whether Bandai is picking up Macross 0? How the heck do you leave an anime like that in Japan???
