I don't want to turn this into a big PSP versus DS debate, but the widescreen the PSP employs makes me more excited for PSP Madden versus DS Madden. Forget the graphics and touchscreen for a second. In normal Madden games the game zooms out for passing plays because of the 4:3 screen. And it is sometimes hard to see the receivers flanked all the way to the outside (Same could be said with ESPN as well). Now with the widescreen of the PSP, you should be able to practically fit the whole field on the screen meaning you should be able to see those outside receivers as easily as the inside ones. We'll see what happens though.
Remeber how awesome PS1 games look on the LCD screen? This will have the same effect for 3D on a portable. It's gonna look better than the PS1 Madden just because the screen is much smaller.

Well... I haven't seen the PS1 LCD myself but one thing to consider is that the DS screen has a lower resolution. The lower the resolution the bigger a problem you have with pixel popping.

I can't think of many games that come out during a system's launch period that can honestly be used to fairly gauge the abilities of the lauching hardware.

I agree. Rogue Leader was an awesome-looking game. But that's an exception, not a rule, particularly on handhelds. Graphically, the GBA launch titles (with the possible exception of Rayman) were thoroughly unimpressive. Just look at the huge leap in technology between Castlevania Circle of the Moon and Harmony of Dissonance.
