Supposedly they're random packs put together by a shop with X rares, commons, etc. In reality, you pay for a pack of the jank they couldn't sell otherwise.

..typing it out, I feel like a fucktard. It sounded good at the time for some goddamn reason or other.

Ya, it's ok if they're cheap enough and you just want like commons but they aren't "random" in the sense of any card but any garbage rare type of "random". It's a waste IMO.

It's a total waste. All I got was 2 stupid Grave Titans, some fucking Zendikar Avenger and a goddamn Bolas dragon or whatever. They're total bullshit.

Kidding. I got jack and shit.

The only time I buy anything other than singles are when I'm drafting and the point of the product isn't to obtain cards, but the game itself. I'll never understand paying for packs to actually fish for cards. Way too expensive.

It's about the hope. I mean, honestly, pulling an awesome card from a pack is like, 25 percent of the fun for me. I love the randomness, and buying singles always feels "cheap" to me.

Then again, I play casual. If I was playing for case, I'd just buy singles all day and fuck some shit up.

I've always wanted to try this, but I sort of am afraid of my local comic shop. It's extremely stereotypical in the feels sort of uncleanly nerd in the bad way. I feel this way about a lot of stuff like this though. Wish there was a shop in my area that catered to more of a normal crowd that just might occasionally want to buy a comic or mange or dabble in some D&D or Magic the Gathering.

TBH, there is no "normal" crowd of MTG players....at least in my experience. Every shop I've been into in the SoCal region (re: all) have been full of the same people. Good people, but yeah...they're not breaking any stereotypes.

I'll agree with this, to an extent. I'd try and get three or four good friends into it at the same time, so you have a group to play with.

Yeah, totally. Which is why I have by 3 friends and wife to play. That's about it. I watched some dudes play today, and those fuckers didn't even talk. My wife goes into the card store and people fucking stare like she's made of solid gold or something.

Ya, it's so depressing how awkward it is for women. There was one girl that came to try it out like a month ago when we drafted and everyone was all over her and she never came back.

The dude behind the counter tried to sell her pink card sleeves. Awkward is the least descriptive thing I'd call it.

Buy Duals of the Planeswalkers off PSN/XBLA/Steam. After you're done with the singleplayer, buy DotP 2012 which is an update/2012 edition of the same thing.

Got that? Play online. You're only losing deck editing (the biggest failure of DotP IMO) but you gain much more in terms of casual Magic play.

Which reminds me, I need to finish unlocking cards in DotP vanilla before seeing if the expansions go on sale with DotP releasing in July-August. But it's a huge grind playing brain-dead AI for guaranteed card unlocks. Oh how I wish the deck editor was in there to at least spice up the fun.

Ton of NPH preview cards in todays mechanics rundown.
Colored artifacts are back, and all Phyrexian mana cards that aren't In/Soc apparently are:

Yeah, just commons, but that's to be expected from the usual mechanics rundown. Kinda disappointed in this block's mechanics as a whole. Infect is an amalgamation of two previous mechanics- one of them being admittedly very scarce- imprint is entirely old, battle cry and metalcraft might as well be old effects given keywords for the hell of it, and alternate mana costs are hardly new. Will say Phyrexian mana is probably the most interesting of the lot, outside of the returning imprint. Wonder how far they will push it, as the potential for colorless "free" spells to be broken is high. If we get a new Force of Will-like spell minus the exile cost like so many speculate, ooh boy....

Damn, it looks awesome.
Can you link that preview please? I cant seem to find it on Wizards...

Thankfully, I got a good group of friends to play Magic with. The only thing is when we play at their place they all fuckin smoke and it's been getting to me but that's another issue lol.

The shop I went to twice to buy cards were pretty nice and informative but yeah, they aren't breakin any stereotypes either.

My infect deck seems to be getting owned by my buddies vamp, red, and goblin deck. It feels like the infect deck just cost much more mana to compete with their low mana costing cards that tends to buff all their creatures up. Maybe I need a more noob-friendly deck. XD

Wasn't even really thinking about it before, but Slash Panther looks pretty darn solid for Mirran limited. Activates Metalcraft and comes in as a 4/2 with haste for just 4 plus 2 life or 5 when I need it? Great stuff. Phyrexian life costs as a whole are going to be cool in limited, allowing you to pay different prices based on when you draw stuff.

The best part is that Phyrexian mana cards can be splashed anywhere. Its going to screw with the color balance, but in a good way I think.

Also, in limited, where poison is a very viable strat- maybe even dominant with the new set- the phyrexian life cost will be largely negligible. Come to think of it, why isn't it "Pay 1 mana of ___ color OR get 1 poison counter." Seems more in flavor and harder to overcome since you can't get rid of the counters. Course, if they printed any actual great cards with that, it might break constructed formats where poison isn't even a concern.

So, I lost the mini-tourney. Stupid fireball out of the ass at the last possible round before I monkey stomped him with my elf deck. Still, 2nd place isn't bad.

I got another question. If I wanted to put together a couple of completely evenly matched decks in the vein of the duel decks, what would be a smart way to go about it? I'd like to have a couple set aside that can just be picked up a played and not having to mess with tweaking and whatever between matches. Any recommendations for evenly-matched decks?

I'd make decks focused around 1 particularly powerful card and go simple. Four-ofs for essential support, 1 or 2 of cards that can swing the balance in the deck's favour. I essentially want to do the same thing.

Duel decks only have a few 2-ofs and a bunch of singles, which can hurt the deck's synergy.

Played my first game of Legacy. What a fun format, so much more so than standard.
I don't have any legacy decks, but I like the idea. Thinking of putting together a Bant allies deck with Rafiq.

I've played other TCGs before, and I've bought a beginner Goblin burn deck in the past, but I've never been able to understand how to get into Magic besides picking one set, and buying a shitton of boosters.

What would be the best way to get myself a collection of all types of land and a selection of cards to start making a semi-competition worthy deck? Do I kind of have to have a build in mind before I start working towards it?

Lands are easy. Deckbuilder's toolkit for a baseline of lands, Core staples and a few boosters across different sets. Fat packs for lands and set-specific boosters. Any of www.trollandtoad.com, www.starcitygames.com, www.coolstuffinc.com, or www.topdeckhobbies.com for singles. Yes, it's smart to have a build in mind before working toward it. It's a good idea to check Wizards' visual spoilers, look at what themes are in the current sets, and go from there. Or, you could just look at decks that have won recent tournaments and use those as a baseline, but they typically include some really expensive cards (i.e. Jace, The Mind Sculptor).

I prefer the sealed format for competition, where you make a deck with the cards you open in a booster (or draft from others' boosters). It's fun to build your own deck, but the competitive constructed scene is dominated by a few archetypes such that if you stray from tried-and-true cards, you will probably lose. And it can be pretty expensive, since tournament staples tend to be highly valued in the monetary sense.

Thanks for all the nice replies!

I felt bad posting that as I hate to come across as a hater or brand people the wrong way. It is what it is though for the stuff near me anyways. I tried the demo a while back of the video game version, and IDK I'm a noob, but being able to have random decks was a big draw that was missing to me. I could be crazy though.

If you shapeshift something like Drove of Elves, does it take on the numbers it had under the original control, or would it just clone it's original state? IE would it just be a 0/0 if you had no forests yourself, or would it stay a 5/5.

^^ Cool promo, might attend the release party! Coloured artifacts have such a great flavour to them.

Nah, in this case you're really just calling a spade a spade. It's a hobby that attracts all kinds of social outcasts, which turns off normal people and especially the female demographic. I can't get any of my friends who didn't used to play into the game at all; it's just too nerdy for them. I don't blame 'em - I mean, this is no different from D&D to most folks - but I'm not gonna let that stop me from enjoying the game and its wonderful art!

It copies the original card, not the current state of the card (doesn't copy counters or current buffs or x/x effects)

Like someone else pointed out, a Deckbuilder's Toolkit comes with some basics.

I agree with those above...too bad it isn't easier to find some slightly less nerdy people to play with. I've been wasting some time lately trying to get back up to speed, kinda want to go play somewhere.

Actually, what got me thinking about Magic for like the first time in forever was happening to walk by a few dealer booths at PAX East and finding out (much to my surprise) that the original dual lands now sell for like $50-$100 each. Remembering that for no particular reason I was trying to collect a set of them back in the days of Revised, I recently dug the cards out of a box my parents basement during a trip back home. Just sold a few on ebay and a few to starcity games for a total of like $500. I know I'm never going to invest enough to play Tier 1 (or legacy as I guess it's called now) again, so hey, I'll take the easy money.

If anyone is interested, I also have a sealed Revised ed booster auction that's still going. Not sure if you're allowed to post links like that here, so PM if you want.

I'm pretty broke, but if your ever looking to trade a revised booster away for something, I'd love to open one.

That new clone card is pretty insane. I'm picking up a set, it's better than Sculpting Steel in my Vintage Workshop deck because it lets me fight Oath of Druids, Goblin Welder, and Trygon Predator very effectively. Sadly, my Tropical Perfect Storm list with the sideboard-into-Oath plan seems much worse with this card around. :(

Still waiting on a card that costs (pU)(pU)(pU) (blue or two life), and reads "Counter Target Spell".

Way, way too powerful. I mean, I'd buy 8 of them immediately. 4 to play, 4 to hold onto until they're worth 50 bucks a pop.

Unconfirmed but possibly legitimate spoilers confirm that NPH will flip Standard on top of its head. Jesus. If these are fake, whoever made them should get a job on Wizards' design staff. Answers for everything in there, yet nothing incredibly broken. You need to be a member to view the attachments, but here's the thread:

So much awesome. I love this set. Highlight for me is probably Inquisition of Kozilek for creatures or Planeswalkers.

Jace is coming back down to earth. In a major way.

Really liking Torpor Orb.
Seriously. Squadron Hawk, Titan & Ally hate to the max. That green instant that destroys a permanent at the cost of giving your opponent a measly 3/3 is very nice, too. I'm so zonked for this set. I am nerdgasming. Even Jin-Gitaxias, with his ludicrous casting cost, drips with flavour. Easily my favorite set of the block. Holy wow.

Jin-Gitaxias looks like such a dick.

That means he instantly has a place in one of my decks.

Story-wise it kinda sucks that Mirrodin lost to Phyrexia but that probably just means that there will be another Mirrodin vs. Phyrexia block in the future.

Nah it's cool fuck the good guys, all hail the Father of Machines.

Phyrexia has won the battle, not the war. There's going to be in-fighting amongst the Praetors, and that's when Karn & friends come in to bust ass. Book it.

EDIT: OH SHIT GODBOOK LEAKED (I'm not sure if this is a complete spoiler)

GET IT WHILE IT'S HOT. Disgruntled employee at Wizards?
Internal strife among Phyrexians is really cool, but I don't think they'll kill Phyrexia right after they bring it back.
Yeah, I don't think you can kill Phyrexia. You can only put 'em in hibernation mode for a while. They aren't going to come back to New Phyrexia for at least an entire block after this one, anyway.

It seems the full set was spoiled, whoops heads are going to roll at Wizards.
