WanderingWind said:Supposedly they're random packs put together by a shop with X rares, commons, etc. In reality, you pay for a pack of the jank they couldn't sell otherwise.
..typing it out, I feel like a fucktard. It sounded good at the time for some goddamn reason or other.
Zaraki_Kenpachi said:Ya, it's ok if they're cheap enough and you just want like commons but they aren't "random" in the sense of any card but any garbage rare type of "random". It's a waste IMO.
traveler said:The only time I buy anything other than singles are when I'm drafting and the point of the product isn't to obtain cards, but the game itself. I'll never understand paying for packs to actually fish for cards. Way too expensive.

I feel this way about a lot of stuff like this though. Wish there was a shop in my area that catered to more of a normal crowd that just might occasionally want to buy a comic or mange or dabble in some D&D or Magic the Gathering.
I'll agree with this, to an extent. I'd try and get three or four good friends into it at the same time, so you have a group to play with.WanderingWind said:TBH, there is no "normal" crowd of MTG players....at least in my experience. Every shop I've been into in the SoCal region (re: all) have been full of the same people. Good people, but yeah...they're not breaking any stereotypes.

WanderingWind said:Yeah, totally. Which is why I have by 3 friends and wife to play. That's about it. I watched some dudes play today, and those fuckers didn't even talk. My wife goes into the card store and people fucking stare like she's made of solid gold or something.
Zaraki_Kenpachi said:Ya, it's so depressing how awkward it is for women. There was one girl that came to try it out like a month ago when we drafted and everyone was all over her and she never came back.

Colored artifacts are back, and all Phyrexian mana cards that aren't In/Soc apparently are:

Can you link that preview please? I cant seem to find it on Wizards...

The best part is that Phyrexian mana cards can be splashed anywhere. Its going to screw with the color balance, but in a good way I think.traveler said:Wasn't even really thinking about it before, but Slash Panther looks pretty darn solid for Mirran limited. Activates Metalcraft and comes in as a 4/2 with haste for just 4 plus 2 life or 5 when I need it? Great stuff. Phyrexian life costs as a whole are going to be cool in limited, allowing you to pay different prices based on when you draw stuff.
I'd make decks focused around 1 particularly powerful card and go simple. Four-ofs for essential support, 1 or 2 of cards that can swing the balance in the deck's favour. I essentially want to do the same thing.WanderingWind said:So, I lost the mini-tourney. Stupid fireball out of the ass at the last possible round before I monkey stomped him with my elf deck. Still, 2nd place isn't bad.
I got another question. If I wanted to put together a couple of completely evenly matched decks in the vein of the duel decks, what would be a smart way to go about it? I'd like to have a couple set aside that can just be picked up a played and not having to mess with tweaking and whatever between matches. Any recommendations for evenly-matched decks?
I don't have any legacy decks, but I like the idea. Thinking of putting together a Bant allies deck with Rafiq.Akim said:Played my first game of Legacy. What a fun format, so much more so than standard.

Lands are easy. Deckbuilder's toolkit for a baseline of lands, Core staples and a few boosters across different sets. Fat packs for lands and set-specific boosters. Any of www.trollandtoad.com, www.starcitygames.com, www.coolstuffinc.com, or www.topdeckhobbies.com for singles. Yes, it's smart to have a build in mind before working toward it. It's a good idea to check Wizards' visual spoilers, look at what themes are in the current sets, and go from there. Or, you could just look at decks that have won recent tournaments and use those as a baseline, but they typically include some really expensive cards (i.e. Jace, The Mind Sculptor).G-Pink said:I've played other TCGs before, and I've bought a beginner Goblin burn deck in the past, but I've never been able to understand how to get into Magic besides picking one set, and buying a shitton of boosters.
What would be the best way to get myself a collection of all types of land and a selection of cards to start making a semi-competition worthy deck? Do I kind of have to have a build in mind before I start working towards it?
Nah, in this case you're really just calling a spade a spade. It's a hobby that attracts all kinds of social outcasts, which turns off normal people and especially the female demographic. I can't get any of my friends who didn't used to play into the game at all; it's just too nerdy for them. I don't blame 'em - I mean, this is no different from D&D to most folks - but I'm not gonna let that stop me from enjoying the game and its wonderful art!Brettison said:Thanks for all the nice replies!
I felt bad posting that as I hate to come across as a hater or brand people the wrong way. It is what it is though for the stuff near me anyways. I tried the demo a while back of the video game version, and IDK I'm a noob, but being able to have random decks was a big draw that was missing to me. I could be crazy though.
WanderingWind said:If you shapeshift something like Drove of Elves, does it take on the numbers it had under the original control, or would it just clone it's original state? IE would it just be a 0/0 if you had no forests yourself, or would it stay a 5/5.
Like someone else pointed out, a Deckbuilder's Toolkit comes with some basics.G-Pink said:I've played other TCGs before, and I've bought a beginner Goblin burn deck in the past, but I've never been able to understand how to get into Magic besides picking one set, and buying a shitton of boosters.

unagisensei said:I agree with those above...too bad it isn't easier to find some slightly less nerdy people to play with. I've been wasting some time lately trying to get back up to speed, kinda want to go play somewhere.
Actually, what got me thinking about Magic for like the first time in forever was happening to walk by a few dealer booths at PAX East and finding out (much to my surprise) that the original dual lands now sell for like $50-$100 each. Remembering that for no particular reason I was trying to collect a set of them back in the days of Revised, I recently dug the cards out of my parents basement on a trip back home. Just sold a few on ebay and a few to starcity games for a total of like $500. I know I'm never going to invest enough to play Tier 1 (or legacy as I guess it's called now) again, so hey, I'll take the easy money.
If anyone is interested, I've got sealed Revised ed booster auction that's still going. Not sure if you're allowed to post links like that here, so PM if you want.
Fragamemnon said:That new clone card is pretty insane. I'm picking up a set, it's better than Sculpting Steel in my Vintage Workshop deck because it lets me fight Oath of Druids, Goblin Welder, and Trygon Predator very effectively. Sadly, my Tropical Perfect Storm list with the sideboard-into-Oath plan seems much worse with this card around.
Still waiting on a card that costs (pU)(pU)(pU) (blue or two life), and reads "Counter Target Spell".
Seriously. Squadron Hawk, Titan & Ally hate to the max. That green instant that destroys a permanent at the cost of giving your opponent a measly 3/3 is very nice, too. I'm so zonked for this set. I am nerdgasming. Even Jin-Gitaxias, with his ludicrous casting cost, drips with flavour. Easily my favorite set of the block. Holy wow.Leunam said:Really liking Torpor Orb.
Nah it's cool fuck the good guys, all hail the Father of Machines.Leunam said:Jin-Gitaxias looks like such a dick.
That means he instantly has a place in one of my decks.
Story-wise it kinda sucks that Mirrodin lost to Phyrexia but that probably just means that there will be another Mirrodin vs. Phyrexia block in the future.
Yeah, I don't think you can kill Phyrexia. You can only put 'em in hibernation mode for a while. They aren't going to come back to New Phyrexia for at least an entire block after this one, anyway.Internal strife among Phyrexians is really cool, but I don't think they'll kill Phyrexia right after they bring it back.
