I may be wrong, but I believe it has something to do with the difference between "owning" and "controlling". Because the equipment is on a creature being controlled by your opponent, you don't control those artifacts and therefor don't get metalcraft. However you do still own the equipment, so you can de-equip it.
Which raises another bit of rules weirdness: if that's the case, then how can you activate an ability on a permanent you don't control?

Okay, even I think that this is creeping the creature power a bit too much:

8/8 for 6 with no drawback?
Well, okay, it has a drawback in multiplayer only, but still...

Big creatures without trample/flying/vigilance or something else are kind of useless imo. If I can chump block your hefty dude with a 0/1 token, you might as well just put a 5/5 with flying into play instead.

Yeah, the size ratio seems a bit off even for me though. My general comfortable rule of thumb is that green gets creatures at top efficiency, and those almost never exceed 1 mana per point of P/T

How's that a drawback in multiplayer? It seems like it would hurt everyone but you. not great for making friends... but that seems insanely more powerful in multiplayer

Exactly what I was thinking. This + Loxodon Warhammer would be nuts in multiplayer.

It's a bug. You still had metalcraft.

No, now that I researched further I was correct. Metalcraft counts the artifacts you control. When his creature was mind controlled, it took the equipment with it so he no longer controlled them, and therefor no longer had metalcraft. However he still owns the equipment and could unequip them back to him.

Pretty sure the owner still controls the attached equipment in this scenario, and therefore should've had Metalcraft.

It's one of those weird rulings, where he owns the equipment, but doesn't "control" it. I remember when equipment first came out in Mirrodin block there was a lot of confusion about this.

hmmm, I just read a second section of the rulings on equipment that makes it not as clear. I still think I am correct, but perhaps not for the exact reasons I listed.

oh hoooo, somebody is getting an earful the next time we play. I had that exact scenario happen to me at a sealed draft and the judge claimed I no longer had metalcraft, but reading the actual rulings, it appears ya'll are correct, you still would have metalcraft because you do indeed still control the equipment.

Yeah, but I've been in enough situations where maybe I want to keep that red burn player alive because he's been dealing with the threats I cant hit, or I want to stay friends with the guy who has an army of shrouded flyers, or etc...

Anybody pick up the new Commander decks? I was browsing online and they're going for ridiculous prices. Then I went to my local card shop and they were MSRP. I got two of them and I'm just gonna sit on one and see what happens.

I forgot the release date and thought it was July for some reason and now I see them going for $40 each and out of stock.

I'm sure there will be more soon and the price will drop just Archenemy and Planechase right?

Anybody pick up the new Commander decks?

I picked up Heavenly Inferno and a buddy of mine got Devour for Power. We played 3 matches tonight. Really fun even out of the box. He destroyed me in the first two games using The Mimoplasm. I was using Kaalia. I switched to Tariel in the last game and kept plucking out creatures from his graveyard to block his Mimo and finally won a game. I'm pretty impressed with the cards and managed to pick the deck up for only $27. Can't wait to start customizing it.

The pricing is ridiculous online. These things will be in Walmarts and Targets- they aren't limited releases ala FTVs and we shouldn't have to pay a price hike on them. I didn't preorder as I planned on a) waiting for the lists and spoilers, and b) buying them at my local store as a part of our release event. If I know my local store, though, these things won't be going for $30, though. Dunno if I'll bother participating now.

BTW, for those of you who haven't looked at Salv, 7 cards from Innistrad have been spoiled via some poking around in DotP 2012. Looks like Inn is going to be the gothic themed, graveyard centric set that everyone expected. Flashback is back and we've got spirits, a Van Helsing looking piece of art, demons and crows in a gothic city, and a mythic aura that looks potentially constructed playable.

Looking at the Innistrad art spoilers, something struck me: most of the pseudo-Eurpean influence of Magic has been from the Romantic cultures. This set looks to have definite Germanic influences, and I think that's awesome.

There was a huge community response after my LGS closed, and they were able to raise about $16k in donations (in just a few days) so they could reopen. The first day back was Tuesday, so tonight's FNM was special. I ended up going 3-2 with RDW, losing to some green ramp deck and UBR Twin (I kept a junk hand game 3 since I didnt care anymore, six lands and a shrine. This was the last round). More importantly, we could all hang out at the store and playtest for various ptq's and shit going on soon, and then a bunch of us went out to a local bar and shot the shit until 2 am. It was awesome finally having the store again. I love my LGS.

Also looks like they are bringing flashback uh...back in innistrad. It was kind of a cool mechanic and it will be nice to have some new flashback cards for the type 4 deck.

I've had a mild passing interest in trying some MTG, and figured I might futz around with the PC version for now. Which is more worthwhile to get at this point? Last year's Planeswalkers with all the expansions, or the 2012 version of Planeswalkers?

I'd say this years, just because you'll be more familiar with the most recent cards. But you can't go wrong either way.

They do other work for Wizards also. I was looking at the cover for some 4th edition D&D book and I instantly recognized it as a Wayne Reynolds piece.

Magic artists are god tier
Agreed. Aleksi Briclot, Nils Hamm, Michael Komarck, Jason Chan, Chris Rahn (M12 Volcanic Dragon is SO GOOD), Igor Kieryluk, Chippy, Greg Staples, D. Alexander Gregory... and so many more. Not a big fan of Wayne Reynolds; the guy lacks creativity and ruined Knight of the Reliquary in the Knights vs Dragons duel deck. His non-humanoid creature art is pretty good, though. But yeah, the art is part of the reason I'm so obsessed with this game, and I'm not sure I'd have come back to MTG if not for that.

I managed to pick up a set of the Commander decks from my LGS. One of the guys who I'm friendly with made the pre-order list and was going to only buy Mirror Mastery for Garruk. Then he said if I'd trade the Garruk with him, he'd be fine with letting me buy all the sets (he collects planeswalkers and loves Briclot's work as much as I do). I just so happened to have an M11 Garruk sitting in its sleeve doing nothing, so we traded. I took a Sunblast Angel and Victory's Herald to use in the Heavenly Inferno deck, and two Precursor Golems just because I like the card and didn't have any. I would've given him Garruk just for the right to buy his pre-ordered set, so I don't care that the trade was imba.

So looking forward to playing. I sorta want to tweak the decks, but at the same time like them the way they are. It's going to be a bitch sleeving these bastards, though.

I had not played EDH before picking up the Heavenly Inferno deck. I opened up the store early to let folks come in and get their decks. We ended up playing aaaaalllllllllll day. Commander is so fucking good. We played up until the Booster Draft, I ran it, then we sat down and played some more Commander. Some guys weren't even opening the packs they won :o

2012 just came out and is the "latest" in rules, and probably has people playing online.

2009 is $20 (on PC/Steam) with the expansions that gives you about 7-9 decks to play with that have 16 cards to unlock each. It doesn't have Archenemy's mode. Probably isn't active in online play right now.

Go with whichever.

Seriously, is there an artbook or wallpaper of these made available anywhere?

Yeah I believe there are several books of art you can buy.

Also you can buy original art. Which gives you possession of a one of kind painting featuring the art from a card. Prices for these can range from 100 bucks to several thousands dollars. You get the painting, and a copy of the card it became with the artists signature. You will be the only person on earth with this art. It's actually a decent investment if you have some extra cash laying around.

EDH is incredibly fun, and a neat way to get use out of some your rares that you may not ever use. I have 4 decks, mostly filled with cards I would never use in any other kind of deck. It's kind of fallen out of favor in my group, with providence a few weeks back, we were focused on playing legacy instead, but i'm hoping we can jumpstart it and get back to playing. Although I'm sure people are getting tired of being stomped into the ground by my Uril deck turn 6. Maga seems to be the only deck that has a chance against it.

Yeah, I could never afford an actual original piece, but I did pick up this print at GenCon last year:

Am I the only one that finds EDH games way too long and painful? Granted, I was playing with a borrowed deck to get a feel for the format, but it didn't feel fun.

I've had a few very long games (including one 6 hour one at a ptq that I specifically remember), but they usually arent too drawn out for me. It really depends on the decks and players though.

well, playing with a borrowed deck actually makes it a lot worse. there are some people who just don't like EDH, but a big part of the format is doing your own thing and making a deck that aligns well with your mtg interests.

My friends and I played (5 of us) with the new Commander decks (All stock) and the game lasted 4 hours and we didn't even really finish, myself and one other were left and we just called it so we could get back to some normal games. It seems like a cool concept but the games take too long and the way at least these Commander decks are setup make it impossible to get any traction when you have 4 other people able to nullify your attacks and/or kill most of your creatures with one card.

Went undefeated today in a Swiss SOM draft. My first time winning a draft. I had so much removal and fantastic draws.

Here is what I drafted: http://www.raredraft.com/watch?d=2sb52

Feels good to get that first win off my chest.

This is the deck I used.
Nice! It took me almost 20 drafts to go 3-0, then I went on a rampage.

I drafted a deck like yours this morning with even more removal and felt awesome about it. Went 0-3...lol.

Don't sit on them. The supply issues with them are short-term. These decks aren't a limited-release product. They just happened to sell out of the first batch.

I just came back to MtG after 10 year absence (I think I finished playing with Invasion). I have some questions, if I may:

1. Do I remember correctly that Wizards of the Coast cut off expansions after a certain time has passed, much like Games Workshop updates Codexes for each Warhammer armies? Or are all expansions still sanctioned for play?

2. I remember there was a magazine for MtG. Is it still going?

3. If I want to get back into Magic, but don't want to invest a lot of money - what options do I have? Sealed draft?

Thanks for help!
