You know, I can't really figure out which one is better/worse, between Fallen Empires and Homelands.

Fallen Empires has Goblin Grenade, Hand of Justice, and the pump knights.

Homelands has Serrated Arrows, the Sengir family cards, and Autumn Willow.

Man. I remember when pulling an Autumn Willow was something to be excited about. :lol

Whoa, did you just leave out the almighty Hymn to Tourach from that Fallen Empires list? One of if not the best discards ever.

Wow. So, won again online. Lucky streak is neat.

EDIT: Well, I may be done with physical cards. This online thing is pretty fucking cool. I want to play? I play. The end. Anybody want all my great cards for some online stuff....lol.

Aw shit, how did I forget Hymn? :lol Yeah, taking that into account, Fallen Empires pretty clearly beats out Homelands.

So...Homelands for worst Magic set ever then? Kinda makes me wonder what the R&D team was thinking back then. The Dark, Fallen Empires, and Homelands all in succession, and only about 10 good cards between the three sets. :lol Dark times for Magic back then.

It was a totally different mindset then. It's evolved to where it is today, but the flavor of the game was more...gamey...than tournament and named decks like CawBlade and whatever. Sure, names eventually came to exist from certain builds - and I imagine the internet explosion and increased communication had a lot to do with that - but it's more that the game has changed.

Which is good, because look at the dozens of failed CCGs out there because they failed to evolve with their audience.

The game has gotten a LOT smarter, too. It's definitely not a game for idiots (social awkwardness still A-okay!) and the complexity has only gotten deeper. Compare the rulebooks that used to come with the 60 card pack boxes and compare the rulebook to today.

Man I don't need to hear things like this... my resolve is crumbling.

Y'know, it's kinda funny. I was just thinking today how I miss the simpler days of Magic. Maybe it just has a lot to do with the fact that there have been a ton of new abilities and rule changes since I last played seriously, but...I don't know. I still have this obsession with pre-Fallen Empires cards that I just can't shake. Same obsession I had back in 1997. Same with Revised and 4th Edition (though 4th was still around when I started, bought a LOT of boosters/starters of that). In retrospect, Magic was so much different back then. Of course, I also remember being around for the dawn of true "combo" decks, with Cadaverous Bloom. I think that's when the game really started to change. Everybody in my circle was suddenly obsessed with the Bloom deck and the possibilities behind it.

Actually, the evolution of Magic reminds me a lot of how fighting games have evolved over the years. Starts off simple and, as WW put it, "gamey", and eventually people start coming up with crazy advanced strategies and the game begins to change around that. It's a bit discouraging for someone like me, honestly. I've never been good at identifying combos and realizing their potential, in both Magic and fighting games, but I still love the premise and the actual act of playing the games. In fighters, I always have to rely on combo guides and such, and in Magic I always have to rely on deck lists. I don't think I've ever come up with my own deck that was anywhere near as good as a preconstructed/deck list/deck someone else built for me.

Damn. That was more rambling than I intended to do...

I actually think the game is simpler now for the strictly casual crowd. Creatures sucked so much and counters were so strong back then. Some of the players in my high school didn't even want to play me since my deck was stacked with things like Counterspells, Forbids, Mana Leaks, Force Spikes, etc. At least now the lower costed creatures have been beefed up and counters aren't as rampant.

I'd like them all for... something IRL? lol

Homelands is still available at a flea market stand around here for $2 a pack. Sheesh

Great cards in The Dark

Maze of Ith
Elves of Deep Shadow
Ball Lightning

Good cards in The Dark

Ashes to Ashes
Blood Moon
Dance of Many
Dark Heart of the Wood
Goblin Wizard
Mana Vortex

It's better than the other two sets lol

Lol. I can't give up the game altogether. Too wrapped up in nostalgia for me.

Maybe I'm just bitter about that time that I bought a pack of The Dark for a ridiculous price and ended up getting nothing that hadn't been reprinted in Chronicles. :lol

But yeah, The Dark isn't as bad as Homelands and Fallen Empires, I suppose. Maze of Ith and Ball Lightning are pretty boss, at least. Elves of Deep Shadow has some awesome artwork, too.

Ok, so illusion deck.

4 lords of unreal (suffah!)
4 phantom bears
4 phantom dragons
4 invisible stalkers
4 phantasmal images
4 phantom warriors
2 mind unbound
2 skaab ruinator
3 mana leak
2 cackling counterparts

Any suggestions for the last 5 cards?

Wandering, why not add some Phyrexian Metamorphs?

The swords would kill some of his illusions if he targeted them though

I might do that. Hex proof means I can still target my guys though right? So lord of unreal, then blammo.

Besides, I'm trading my swords to y2dvd.

Just found a stack of mental missteps and batter skulls. Stupid sexy banned cards

Yeah, but if you target a bear, even with hexproof, the trigger triggers and you have to sacrifice it.
Lord of the unreal keeps the other guy from killing your illusions, but you can still do it.

Equipment for those invisible stalkers. Swords are great but of course rare and expensive. A cheap and effective alternative is the Trepination Blade from Innistrad. Those things can be absolutely savage.

Ah. Well, no swords then. Does that mean phantasmal image and crackling counterpart too? Of course it does. Dammit. MORE ILLUSIONS WOTC

Edit: Sin, good idea

This is wrong actually. Hexproof prevents creatures from being the target of spells or abilites your opponent controls. It doesn't make things spellproof, it makes them untargetable.

EDIT: Of course you were referring to his own abilities/equipment and that is absolutely correct and I'm a putz. Feel free to ignore me.

Just stick 4 Ponders in there and call it a day? Everyone loves Ponder.

I know I do.
It's been some time since I had a deck without ponder in it

And now with evolving winds, when you have the opportunity to draw a card and shuffle the rest. Ponder is too good.

Oh, I never even considered using Evolving Wilds like that. I always just think of it as a "get the land I need" and never think of the shuffling component. Brilliant.

You can also use it a lot less effectively with Delver of Secrets. You look the top card, don't like what you see, shuffle with evolving wilds before draw phase. But this combo actually sucks because it means you planted a land that already couldn't be use on the turn before and now on this turn it will just be tapped. But who knows? Maybe some late game thing where you need that one card more than a land.

If he's playing blue he'd probably be better off going with Runechanter's Pike over Trep Blade IMO, especially if he's playing Ponder

Trep always runs into issues for me, and it never works the way I'd hope it would

Managed to score a Liliana of the Veil after winning a draft with my friends :D

Also, my friend plays with all of those damn Swords. 'War and Peace' and 'Feast and Famine' just fuck shit up. Them and the Titans are so ridiculously overpowered.

My friend is actually really pissed at my Sword of Light and Shadow now that I'm actually drawing it, as there's pretty much nothing his spirit deck (almost entirely white with a bit of blue) can do about it if I get it on the board.

Yeah we temporarily banned the Swords haha. Along with Time Stretch as well, after we played an 8 man game of EDH and one guy played it, and then the next guy copied a spell in an opponents graveyard. Game ruined!

Also, we drafted 2 packs Inni 1 pack DA, I ended up going for Spirits and tokens and lucked out that only one other played white. One and two drops smashed it, then flying spirit tokens did the rest. Moorland Haunt is pretty sweet too.

I get some physical singles through ebay. While scouring through, I did notice some MtGO cards in their list. Not sure how reliable that is, since I'm not into MtGO.

But buying from bots is a dream. Seriously, it's really easy.

Deckbuilding and testing on MODO is amazing.

1) 24/7 Constructed Queues/Daily Events so you can test your creations.
2) 24/7 Bot trading so I can make and test tweaks constantly.
3) Pajamas, comfy couch.

the only big downers are: A) no real cubing, B) dead Legacy scene, and C) the monthly plague of multiqueuing right before the next round of MOCS QPs start accumulating.

I suggest finding a set of bots-the supernova bots, Marlon, or MTGOTraders that you work with for most commons/uncommons/rares and mythics from non-drafted sets, and use the classifieds to get currently drafted Mythics.

BTW if you are looking to get in DKA singles on MODO , the best time will be around the end of this weekend. Everyone is grinding release queues and there are no set redemptions for DKA yet, so there will be a glut of supply pushing down prices as people want to cash in their drafted cards for more packs to keep drafting with.

4 lords of unreal (suffah!)
4 phantom bears
4 phantom dragons
4 invisible stalkers (trade these guys for Delver of the Secrets)
4 phantasmal images
4 phantom warriors (what does this guy do again?)
2 mind unbound (take out)
2 skaab ruinator (trade one or maybe both for Stitched Drakes. ruinator is so hard to cast if you aren't milling yourself. If you decide to stick with ruinator, add in Melfork Looter)
3 mana leak
2 cackling counterparts (take out)
(Add 3-4 Vapor Snags)
(Add draw cards. Mix in Ponders and Gitaxian Probe)
(Add in a Gutshot or two)

Any suggestions for the last 5 cards?

See parathesis above!

Are cards on MtG:O cheaper? I like the real thing because there's a store I play 5 minutes away, but I'm planning on moving comewhat soon and this would be great.

"You're the second person to throw up gutshot. It's a red card, right? That would throw off the gloom. Too bad MM is banned"

It's red, but you can pay with phyrexian mana, so you can just pay 2 life and use it.
