So, I noticed Starcity has the Garruk vs. Liliana and Elsepth vs Tezzeret duel decks up for 40 bucks each. Are these worth the price, are there other good cards in the decks or should I just buy the planeswalkers separate and save the money? I'm especially interested in the Elspeth vs Tezzeret one.

EvT is really good, value-wise. It has an Elspeth, two Swords to Plowshares, and a Mishra's Factory.

It also killed "good" reprints in the sets because of what they did to the deck's retail price. :(

So I've been meaning to pick up a "serious" deck to try and participate in some constructed tournaments, and I found a deck that I think looks amazingly fun:

http://sales.starcitygames.com//deckdatabase/displaydeck.php?DeckID=46693

I pretty much shamelessly stole this deck, including its sideboard (minus the Karn's because they alone added another $100 to it on MTGO) I've been having a TON of fun with it. In the last match I played:

----------

I'm down 6 hp to 20.

WUG deck's got an aether adept out paired with wolfir silverheart and two wolf tokens from an unflipped Garruk Relentless.

At the start of my turn I've got a Wurmcoil Engine, a mortarpod, and a batterskull (neither are equipped to anything), with another mortarpod, blade splicer, ratchet bomb, gideon jura in hand, and 6 mana to cast with.

I equip my active mortarpod to my wurmcoil, and shoot it at the wolfir silverheart. Then I play my blade splicer and pass the turn.

On his turn, he plays a bird, and fights my blade splicer with Garruk, causing him to go to 2 loyalty and thus flip, and then passes the turn.

I play my second mortarpod, and sling the germ at Garruk, then equip it to the blade splicer golem and sling that at Garruk to finish him off. I try to play my Ratchet Bomb to get rid of the remaining wolf tokens, but he mana leaks it. On his turn, he's got no plays but a land. Back to me, I play my Gideon Jura and he concedes.

That DOTP challenge with the Mortarpods certainly gave me inspiration :D

edit: Looking back on the game, I probably could have just equipped my wurmcoil engine with the batterskull and been set O.o But that would not have been as much fun!

I want to put together a mono-green stompy deck with Rancor so bad.

Mono-green elves. Massive ramp with the archdruid and copperhorn scout. You basically get 6 mana by turn 3 and it turns into basically infinite from there on. Put in your favorite 8 CMC stompy and 4x rancor and you're good to go. Some Ezuri's in there to get basically indestructible elves.

Human deck with puresteel paladin, 4 avacyn collars and 4 mortapods. =D

I want to put together a mono-green stompy deck with Rancor so bad.

I had a mono green dungrove elder deck for a long time and it wrecked face. It just ran straight hrough everything from Delvers to wolfrun, mainly thanks to the swords I threw in. I eventually got bored of it and put together a less consistent but far more powerful green ramp. But I strongly recommend putting one together, Espiecally with rancor since the biggest problem it had was giant dungroves getting chump blocked by little dudes all the time.

My only problem is that Green Sun's Zenith should really be a four-of in any such deck like that (so you can grab utility creatures that you have in the deck as one-ofs) and I dunno about buying a playset this close to rotation.

I'll probably still throw something together.

A ton of green decks I played against were constantly using Green Sun's Zenith both to:

Replace their mana accelerators that I was so happy to be sniping.
and
Pull out their game winning cards (Craterhoof Behemoth :< )

Ooh, that's clever. I like that, haha. Mortarpod is fun! Are there any humans with deathtouch that would go into this deck easily?

The Green Sun's will probably plummet in value, unless they see play in Legacy, or there's a surprise unbanning in Modern. Are they legal in Commander?

Drop to under five and produce 5 human tokens off a fateful hour gather. If you have puresteel out and metalcraft (which is easy with all that equipment plus splicers) you can move the equipd around as you blow each human and then each spirit for 10 total damage to the face!

So I tested out a Green-white Pod shell against my friend's zombie deck yesterday.

Game 1 I kept a really bad hand and got stomped.

Game 2 we drew to more of a race, which was cool. In the end, Acidic Sliming my Phyrexian Metamorph that was copying his Geralf's Messenger only to have it copy the same creature to deal the final two damage was how I won. I felt so smart when I realized I could do it.

Game 3 I don't remember much from, but I know I lost haha

I need to work on this deck, in short.

Ahhh Nightshade Peddler was the guy I was thinking of.

Blood Artist, Champion of the Parish, and maybe Unruly Mob might also fit in this style of deck.

Anyone able to translate the text on Jarad?

So I have a commander deck that was once the "Devour for Power" precon. It has gone through some real changes over the last few months, mostly moving away from token generation and more toward big bombs, but it still kept the black-green-white scheme.

I've been thinking a ton about pulling out the green and putting in and putting in blue for a couple of reasons, mostly because my green is only there for land gathering and acceleration purposes. I'm going to put in Allosaurus Rider and Molimo first, to see if having them take advantage of my usual 15 lands on the table works out, but can anyone suggest good blue or green staples for commander so I can improve this beast?

Ah, gotcha. Still, never hurts to have another copy of old NM

Man, I remember when I first got back into the game around the time of M11's release, I attended the Toronto GP just to check out the artists, vendors and the general hub-bub. Troll and Toad had this "2 for $1" bulk rares pile that was basically an EDH treasure trove, full of generals including Niv-Mizzet (who I initially thought of picking up, but at the time was not keen on spending too much money on cardboard). I can't believe how much prices have soared on some generals since then (Niv, Thrax).

I'm really looking forward to the duel deck. Hoping it has good synergy, as the last decks have been quite disappointing. Don't really care about the value of the other cards being included since there's good value in Niv and maybe even Jadar.

Yaaaaay it's Ravnica!

Explosionboners and candyassfloss!

Seriously. 5 guilds, new keywords, new guild symbols. Omgwhutafallingovermyself.

Sad that neither Orzhov or Dimir are in this set though :(

New keywords!

NEW KEYWORDS :D

I haven't squeed for magic in a long, long time :D

I'm finding hard not to get hyped also. The Vorthos in me is LOVING the stuff they've got planned for the pre-release.

Out my 12 booster packs I purchased on ebay, the most valuable seem to be:
-Master of the Pearl Trident (2x)
-Vampire Nocturnus
-Akroma's Memorial

Apparently Master of the Pearl Trident is being used in most Merfolk decks that they're legal in.

I wish I'd gotten a Nocturnus or an Akroma's Memorial though. Cool cards :)

So after splitting a box with a friend, and winning enough packs at the pre-release to essentially have opened a full box...I hadn't YET gotten a mythic (or a thragtusk or any chase rare to be honest outside of a foil talrand) in m13. So last night I buy a fatpack before drafting, every pack being more crap rares (and a couple of dual lands), and then in the last pack I opened up a foil Ajani. My need for getting anything else out of m13 is sedated. This is mostly because I don't want to spend anymore money on m13 when I know I'm gonna crack out on Ravnica, big time.

Wait there's a beta of the new GUI for M:tG:Online? :o!!!! How do I get into this!?

A lot of features are unfamiliar or hard to find. I was unable to set up a Commander Duel vs my friend, we had to have him go to the old client and invite me to it.

There's a few other weird things. Give it a shot, because we're all probably going to have to get used to it eventually.

How much of a hot mess? Because seeing the new card binder/collection screen that implements the card building process from your collection is OHMYGOD.gif

No list view so far can be a pain in the ass for deck building.

Also anyone in the beta or been playing beta?

I didn't realize that once you were in the beta you were in for life, so I've been having fun for the past month, I signed up like 9 years ago and then only realized until last month I was still in the beta haha.

I tried playing some EDH on Cockatrice yesterday. Are Eldrazi really that frowned upon? I get the feeling one player really hated me for using them...

Time to replace them with big sea serpents. Mono-blue doesn't get enough huge creatures :(

RB Zombies is up on SCG right now. It's a mirror, lol.

I think I'd be really paranoid playing a RB deck right now because Celestial Purge becomes like the best card in the format.
