I always thought that people didn't explore Conjurers Closet enough. Ive always felt the card had a ton of uses, but I guess it's to slow in standard to use.

I might start to build a Conjurers Closet deck now lol

I really want to do a deck based around ETB effects. Right now the best way to do it I think is pod, but I might wait to see what RTR brings.

Definitely too slow for standard. You can kind of sneak it into a Thragtusk based deck or something, but a 5 mana end of turn effect doesn't pay off too well in a format where games last 4-6 turns on average.

Nighthawk + Rancor makes me happy.

Rancor + most things makes me happy.

Anyway, I've been playing Magic for about a month or so, ever since some friends introduced me to it and it's quickly becoming a new hobby. I picked up a toolkit a few days ago but I'm still trying to figure which colour/s I want to focus on. Green and black seems like a good combo, I'm just not sure how to think about building a good deck. Obviously I'm taking mana costs and creature/sorcery etc. ratios into consideration, I'm just wondering which abilities and deck themes work well together.

Which format? Standard? Modern? Legacy? If you want green/black, wait for Return to Ravnica and/or get the Izzet vs Golgari duel deck. There's guaranteed to be good stuff for green/black in those.

Does anyone else have any trouble with MTGO getting incredibly laggy during long matches, to where it simply doesn't respond to what you ask half the time? I just lost a match to time because it took me at least three times as long to take my actions in game three as it should have.

It's a shame too, because it was a really, really fascinating matchup of my Grixis control deck against his mono-white trading post deck. I hadn't seen that particular brew before, and it was actually quite nasty. Game one I fell to his Restoration Angels and Wurmcoil Engines while his artifact recycling plant spewed out a massive card advantage. Game two was a long, drawn-out affair, with my first Nicol Bolas eating a Celestial Purge before the second Nicol Bolas sealed the deal by stealing his Wurmcoil. He had some secret tech game three: Nevermore, naming Nicol Bolas. My Lone Revenant went on the beatdown plan before he dropped two Metamorphs copying my Revenant while sitting at 6 life; one traded with the other, and I was digging as hard as I could for my lone Devil's play to finish the game when the timer ran out.

The Trading Post shell is a powerful one. I think we're going to see some really powerful decks built on that framework before rotation.

Yeah zorro, I've noticed the same thing lately. I just thought it was my shitty laptop :(

Also, does anyone know specifically where the ruling is about planeswalkers entering the battlefield have an effect that puts loyalty counters on them? I got into an argument with people saying the OPPOSITE thing about Doubling Season. Where the entering amount is the same but the abilities are doubled.

On this page http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Article.aspx?x=magic/planeswalkers/week4 it pretty clearly says that abilities are costs, so Doubling Season wouldn't affect it. But I don't see anywhere saying that the loyalty counters being put on when it's summoned is an effect, so I'm not sure how to prove that it would be affected.

The abilities are definitely not affected. Everyone I've ever talked to in person or online says that the ETB counters are doubled though. Doubling Season definitly doubles the counters of any other permanent that has "Cardname enters the battlefield with X counters on it" and that's the unwritten text on every planeswalker card.

EDIT:
306.5b A planeswalker is treated as if its text box included, "This permanent enters the battlefield with a number of loyalty counters on it equal to its printed loyalty number." This ability creates a replacement effect (see rule 614.1c).
Yup, there it is. Absolutely no ambiguity, Doubling Season doubles the ETB counters

Awesome, thank you!

Are you Ian Shore? Just read the matchup on SCG.
Ya, that'd be me. I messed up in both games pretty badly, mostly due to going into the day on 4 hours sleep. There was about an hour and a half gap between my last game of the day and the quarterfinals starting and I was definitely not playing my best.

R10 opponent got real salty after I didn't want to draw. It'd guarantee him in, but it'd put me into a situation where I'd risk having a few people overtake me, and the margins were going to be way too narrow.

No 8-way split :(, so have $375 store credit. Getting 3 RTR boxes, just like last year. :-P

Won the Nicol Bolas playmat at my LGS today! :)

Good job :D

I almost can say the same. I went to my LGS and got 2nd! Haha. I'm still pretty proud of that. But it was actually not very disappointing losing the last game, because me and my friend were the only two people who went 3-0, so our last match we knew one of us would be getting the mat.

I still wanted to win, but getting 1st & 2nd as friends is pretty cool.

Oh, nice. I was confused by some of the plays according to the write-up but I didn't have a clear view of the board. Can't blame anyone for being tired after 10 straight rounds of standard though, they really should let top 8 go the next morning.

What's Mikaeus do for the deck exactly? I haven't been keeping up with standard since AVR released.

Congrats on getting top 8 though. You'll have to spoil the contents of your RTR boxes when you get them.

Mikaeus is Townships 5/6/7 for the matchups where you want more of them.

Yeah, I definitely was misplaying left and right. Was struggling v. Ramp every time I played against it. Got steamrolled by Wolf Run White - my only loss in the swiss.

Ahh I gotcha. What's the game plan against Ramp? Or is it just an unfavorable match-up due to the nature of the deck?

Whew, spent about 3 hours yesterday pouring over my group's cube. God we had so much crap in there. Should hopefully be a lot more interesting now.

The only thing it's missing are a couple good Esper and Bant triple colour creatures. I've got 2 from each of the other sets of colours but those two are still absent.

Whatves. Top 8 is damn good. You should be proud.

You want Silverheart to live through bonfire. But you definitely want more Conscripts- I think the 3rd Mikaeus could easily be axed for one.

So, ever since we had that days long power outage here in Ohio, my family has gotten back into M:tG. A week or so ago, I was given Venser's planeswalker deck as a gift. And Venser has an ability that creates an Emblem. I was unfamiliar with this kind of card so I looked it up.

Apparently, it's not a permanent, it's pretty much just a floating ability that can't be removed because there are no cards that target emblems. My source is kind of old, but is this still the case?

Also, if Venser is destroyed or leaves play, does the emblem remain?

Yup. Emblems aren't removable.

In most cases, the game is over once you let a planeswalker create an emblem.

Yeah, the Emblem's just kinda "there", it's like you get a power up for the rest of the game.

I'm loving the elf wave deck. I went 3-1 at gameday and dropped out of top 4 because I wanted to leave. I would have gone 4-0 if I had four Genesis wave, I only own 2 right now. So many comeback wins too from Genesis wave. I would have been able to Genesis wave in the game I lost for 13 which would be game. Such a fun deck. Gavony should be mainboard too, I never didn't side it in.

History!

So planeswalkers used to have ultimates that read "For the rest of the game, blah blah blah." Unfortunately, this is hard to keep track of since there's nothing reminding you of this new, permanent effect. These abilities were later erratad to say "You get an emblem with" so that it would be clear that the ability exists. With that change, the rules were updated to make it clear that there is no way to interact with an opponent's emblem short of causing him to lose the game.

Elspeth is a good example of this. See the difference in her wording versus the Oracle text?

Do you guys think thragtusk will be banned eventually in standard? Some people were talking about it today at the game shop, so many green decks today where I play.

Yeah I guess if you Conscripted a Primeval Titan and swung in with your Silverheart and the Soulbond dude you're looking pretty good.

You going to continue with Naya Pod until it rotates? It seems really fun to play, Restoration Angel seems like it pushes the deck over the top.

I don't see a reason not to unless the format moves to Titan-based strategies heavily. The deck's ridiculous. I 5-0'd Delver, and the only non-Ramp deck that gave me problems was a Grixis Control deck that had issues due to its 28-mana source manabase. (It was mulling a lot, to 5 G1 and 4 G3)
