SEGA Integrates SEGA of America and SEGA Europe Management Teams To Drive Growth In Western Markets

SEGA Continues to Execute Plan to Become a Profitable, Leading Independent Game Publisher

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON - (January 20, 2005) - SEGA of America, Inc. (SEGA of America) and SEGA Europe Ltd. (SEGA Europe), wholly-owned subsidiaries of SEGA Corporation (SEGA), a corporation in Tokyo, Japan, today announced that they have integrated their management teams to collectively drive growth in Western markets. Effective today, SEGA has appointed Naoya Tsurumi to CEO of SEGA of America; Simon Jeffery to President/COO of SEGA of America; and Mike Hayes to President and COO of SEGA Europe. Mr. Tsurumi will also serve as Corporate Officer of SEGA Corporation and CEO of SEGA Europe, as appointed on December 1, 2004.

As CEO of SEGA of America and SEGA Europe, Mr. Tsurumi will manage SEGA's software gaming businesses in North America and Europe, leading the independent subsidiaries toward improved efficiencies. These changes reinforce SEGA's strategy to gain market share within Western markets by jointly developing and acquiring content in North America and Europe. Under this new structure, SEGA management will collaborate more aggressively on product development and acquisitions across these growing territories and the next generation of platforms.

"Integrating the management of our US and European organisations will allow SEGA's Western regions to aggressively develop and pursue products that appeal to Western consumers," said Naoya Tsurumi, CEO, SEGA of America and SEGA Europe. "As we prepare SEGA for next generation hardware, this unified organisation will better position SEGA for growth in these markets."

Since 1992, Mr. Tsurumi has served in various roles and managed many critical functions at SEGA Europe, including overseeing operations, marketing, development and licensing for SEGA's consumer game products in Europe. As COO of SEGA Europe, a post he assumed in 2002, Mr. Tsurumi succeeded in re-establishing the SEGA Europe organisation after SEGA's exit from the hardware business.

In the role of president and COO for SEGA of America, Simon Jeffery will direct SEGA's software gaming businesses in North America, including overseeing all product and business development, marketing, sales, operations and content. Previously, Jeffery served as president of LucasArts Entertainment Company, vice president of marketing for Virgin Interactive Entertainment and in various management roles at Electronic Arts. Mr. Jeffery replaces Hideaki Irie who has been president and COO since October 1, 2003, and who has been instrumental in reshaping the strategic direction of SEGA of America.

Mike Hayes, formerly Managing Director for Europe, will replace Mr. Tsurumi as President and COO of SEGA Europe, effective immediately. SEGA Europe's second year of operation saw a significant growth in business with the huge success of Sonic Heroes and Football Manager 2005. Hayes will be building on the achievements in 2004 and striving for further growth and expanding market share throughout 2005.

Jesus. everytime I read something about Sega, it just gets more pathetic.

can Sega get any worse?

answer: yes they can :(

After Segata Sanshiro died saving that missle that was fired at Sega HQ, Sega just hasn't been the same.

It's like they don't have any soul anymore. No more hero.

Sega breaks my heart. I love the company but damn! They sure are dumb. Kinda like that rich nerdy kid at school who keeps buying stuff for the pretty girls at school hoping that he'll score but gets zip! Poor poor Sega.

Never forget and all that.

Doesn't he remind you a lot of Kramer from Seinfeld?

This won't change anything. Nothing can save Sega now... ::sob::

And whoever said it is right. This will only hurt Sega of Europe.

Dude, have some heart here.

He's right. It's nearly impossible to care about Sega anymore because there is simply no one left who understands what Sega is doing, including its own employees.

Sigh...but even in the face of such logic, I'll wave my Sega Freak Flag high! Just you watch! :lol

Haha... I've quit caring about Sega, but that's not because I hate Sega. It's because I just quit playing video games.... I haven't played a game besides some sports games casually. Well, not that I think about it, it might have been Sega that made me quit games... Too much drama and it's just depressing watching Sega slowly fall.

Oh btw, I don't find anything wrong with this news. Dunno why you're all jumping on Sega for this. They're just consolidating because they probably want to save money.

About time something like this has happened. Sega of America was like dead men walking, like zombies as they let rampant negative buzz and fanboyism destroy their ability to sell games. Then, ofcourse, you arm chair quarterbacks shit all over this press release for no reason at all. Care to elaborate why this is a stupid move? If it's a gut feeling then maybe you should keep that nonsense to yourself. If Sega's next gen lineup fails to impress then that's a reason for you to bitch.

Sega's booth at the World Hobby Fair sucked. SUCKED!!!

Does anyone want to buy my NDS with the demo of Meteos currently running inside? I'll send it to you in sleep mode so you'll get it and will be able to play Meteos until you turn off the system. Price: $500. I'll even include a lame Kirby screen cleaner that I got at the World Hobby Fair, where sega's booth sucked. SUCKED!!!

Sega died when they broke up UGA and turned Smilebit into a JPN Sports developer. What a shame, from a fun arcade compony to a boring miss-managed publisher.

Ohhh... well, times change.

I agree with this. From what you can gather from that press release, it seems like these people are much more competent than the pretty much nothing that Sega of America is currently. Sega of Europe seemed to be a lot more intelligent than SoA, too.

Sega Europe have just been gaining ground in terms of independance and general say in what happens here. While I agree that SoA need a kick up the ass, SoE have been doing alright for themselves lately. I suspect this will only lead to SoA taking over completely in time, because their market is "bigger".

what??? it's a perfect decision, sega europe should never have existed. I would not even have a sega of america. What is the point.

Sega is a japanese company, end of the story. And by the way, sega is not doing bad at all, the stock is the fastest VG maker climber since december.

That said i agree they make crap lately, but i guess it's because they have been receiving insane amount of money hat for next gen support and are working on that since 1.5 year.

Sega is a japanese company
You answered your own question.

Largely, the Japanese have no clue what Westerners want or how they react to certain marketing. Lately, with the types of games that the Japanese have largely been pumping out, that's only more evident. Am I putting down the Japanese? No. But the cultures are just different, and they simply do not understand North Americans and Europeans for the most part.

Segata should've guided the missile into a competitor's R&D dept. Or at least jumped off it after all it was headed into outer space...but he did get his own Saturn release as compensation

Funny how Sega's only managed to be really successful in the US, then.
