Making a mix-tape/CD for my girl (suggestions)

Just making a mix-tape for my girl, she made me one like 2 months ago and never really tried to pay her back with one.. i just got 10 songs down so far, but am looking for some more.
Any suggestions? She is into the RnB stuff mainly, some of the stuff I got are a mix of her and my faves.

my playlist so far:

1. Whitney Houston - I will always love you (Has to be in there)
2. Leona Lewis - A Moment Like this
3. Leona Lewis - Angel
4. Neyo - Miss Independent (My song that describes her)
5. Neyo - So you can cry
6. Michael Jackson - You are not alone
7. Aerosmith - I don't want to miss a thing
8. Savage Garden - Truly Madly Deeply
9 - Ronan Keating - When you say nothing at all
10. Mario - Let me Love you

Im sure I can pad it out with some RnB stuff.

Dude, that mixtape is a lame crybaby pussy-man mix, you need some good hard songs about fucking to round it out, although this probably says more about my distaste for RnB 'love' songs than it does your mixmaking skills. Every V-day I make a tape for my lady and I can consistently make her cry, which is a victory for me.

EDIT: You can't start with the Whitney, that's like a premature cumshot, save that shit for later on when the mix heats up. Also, two Leona songs in a row? No, pick one or t'other, not both. // EDIT AGAIN: use Angel I think, A Moment... is a bit lame IMO "Woah I can't believe this is happening to me!!" Umm, no, unless you're refering to the early ejactuation with the Whitney? :lol // Two songs one after another is a big no-no - here are my rules:

First, only one song per artist (this rule can be broken once-per-mix but the songs must at least be from different albums). For a lovemix I like to start off strong with some classic low-key romance, take it up a notch with some more pace and then once again with a bit of lovin', and then hit below the belt with a sappy softie that'll melt her heart. You can put a couple of softies together, and then at around the halfway point start with the songs about fucking. Very important. Pace the tape like you're seducing her - melt her heart, take her clothes off then fuck her hard, then hit up with some post-coital cuddles, then back to the bedroom. Also, use some songs that you love but she doesn't know. If they're especially good she will connect these songs to you and they'll be all the more special. I use B-sides for this purpose usually.

Here is my most successful (IMO) mix, it's a bit rock oriented for your tastes most likely but it did the trick for me -

Peggy Lee - Fly me to the moon (classic original version - pure romance - represents her) This might work for you
I'm From Barcelona - Treehouse (a song that represents me "I have built a treehouse, it's a you and me house")
Adem - Spirals (soppy song using spinning galaxies as a metaphor for two lovers)
Bright Eyes - First day of my life (classic indie love song, makes her cry on cue) This might work for you too, I dunno
Broken Social Scene - Swimmers (sexy voice, sets the mood)
CSS - Let's make love and listen to death from above ("Wine then bed then more then again")
Green Day - Hitchin a ride (leftfield, but it's a song she saw me perform with my band when we first met)
Morning Wood - Take off Your Clothes (raunchy song about gettin nekkid)
Groop Dogdrill - best sex in Texas (groinal groove rocker, such a sexy song)
Postal Service - Brand New Colony (electro romance, nice pacing to bring it down after the fucking)
Frank Turner - You are my Sunshine (the kick in the balls/uterus, so sad and romantic, tears guaranteed)
Fester - Fuck (a song by my mate's band - "I'm bored I'm bored I'm bored lets fuck!", always gets a laugh after the heart on the sleeve sappyness of the previous tracks)

Hmm, that was fun to write... as for you mix, no idea mate, got any Lionel Ritchie going on there? How about some Stevie Wonder?

Yeah, whats going on with that list? Play some manly romantic pop rock.

Throw in some

The Replacements-I Will Dare, You're My Favorite Thing, etc.

Some sneering Stones songs more or less as a joke; BackStreet Girl, Sitting on a Fence, Lets Spend The Night Together etc

It's early :/.

well, i never made a mix tape before so it was good to ask on here.. i was asking myself whether to have two artists together at all, but glad to get some feedback.

will make adjustments :)

Really I could get a MP3 CD full easy.

R&B is my thing. 87-97 is where it is at. Listening to the few newer ones on your template list. It is meh to me cause I have heard what great it. I did the watered down list of the necessities in my 1st. This is the anthology of the last hurrah before music died around 1997. The deep cuts from these CDs are better than the singles of this decade. I don't know how old you are but I still only just remember like 96 97 when some of this was really popular before things went to shit.

Music died? Really?? I feel for you (and your gf's) if that's what you really believe. The 2000s have been awesome for all kinds of music, I can't imagine it's not the same for yours too. Seems to me (and this is the view of a pure outsider) that everyone that references RnB talks about the same artists. There must be some better stuff under the surface surely? With rock/pop it seems that the bands everyone knows are pretty meh but once you get deeper down the rabbit hole is where you find the pure gold.

if you're asking for help on a mix cd for your girlfriend you are doing it wrong...........

find a bunch of songs that have been pertinent to your relationship for as how long as it's been or just songs that carry a tune that reminds you of her. throw em together until they flow well and then bam.......there it is.

wow, some of you guys are just complete jerks.

maybe he was intentionally going for an old school, sappy love song aesthetic. and even if he's not, he said he likes those songs and she does as well in the o.p. you think putting a bunch of obscure stuff on the album is going to woo her with his mysterious new music knowledge? she likes the guy who likes that music.

actually, this is excellent advice.

I think this just shows a fundamental difference in how people can consume music. Personally I love showing new or rare music to people, especially if it's awesome music for awesome people. Other people just want the songs and artists they already know, just shuffled up in a different order to what they're used to. It's only 'obscure' music if you've not heard it before, if you know the songs they could well be your favourite songs in the world even if they're b-sides or compilation-only tracks or indie records with tiny fanbases. What's the problem with finding new music and sharing it with the people you love?

And yeah, in my experience my voluminous and often obscure music collection is a plus with both my lady and my friends in general. My friends ask me what's new on my iPod every week when they come round, I wouldn't call that imposing my tastes on them.

Also, as I said upthread, it's all about mixing classic songs with lesser known ones. The songs in my mix were almost all songs that my gf knew really well with a couple of exceptions that were songs she'd not heard by bands she already knew and loved.

Really though, by criticising his tunes I just wanted an explanation of why he chose them, both for the internal consistency of his mix and becuase I never understand why men listen to that kinda music. Anyone wanna school me?? ;P

It's hyperbole but not BS. Male RnB groups have vanished the past decade. When I have looked up interviews of the 90s guys they all say they don't listen to current stuff or that it is straight up shit. When they are more thoughtful they discuss how Hip Hop has too much sway and the overall process the industry is the problem.

I don't understand the point, you either give her a mix-CD to share new music with her (like "hey bitch, I found these cool new songs I want you to listen to") or you make her a disc with a bunch of songs that mean something to her so she doesn't need to spend the 5 minutes it takes to burn a music CD herself. If you're going off the suggestions from an internet forum than you're doing it wrong.

This thread makes me want to watch High Fidelity again :lol

"The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don't wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules."

By the by, that movie also has a fantastic song that should make a good RnB Mixtape: Stevie Wonder "I believe when I fall in love"

Get some man's R&B up in there.

Jeremih - Birthday Sex (Uptempo Remix)
Usher - Trading Places
Drake - Best I Ever Had
Lloyd - Year of the Lover
Lloyd - Get it Shawty
Lloyd - You (ft. Lil Wayne)

ultimate love ballads, if you're going for that "cheesy but genuine" vibe:

"i'll stand by you" by the pretenders
"i would walk 500 miles" by the proclaimers

i'll be back with more later, but these come immediately to mind. for something more "indie," check out:

"glitter and twang" by tullycraft
"brand new colony" by postal service (nice call, jedeye)
"nightingale" by saves the day
"buddy holly" by weezer
"a.m. 180" by grandaddy

I'm totally nabbing that for next year's lovemix, that is an awesome song. Other songs I've been thinking of including on future mixes include:

NERD - Brain
Adem - To Cure a weakling child and boy/girl song (aphex twin cover, amazing lyrics though "My feet and my arms and my ears, and your beat")
Mint Royale and Lauren Laverne - Don't Falter (amazing pop song, seriously catchy stuff)
Ben Folds - The Luckiest (pure sickly sweet lovesong)
Deathcab for Cutie - You can do better than me (because I'm an insecure fool!)
Bloc Party - So here we are
Smashing Pumpkins - Ava Adore (or Perfect, but that's more bittersweet)
or Zwan - Come With Me
Radiohead - Reckoner

Heh, I love making these mixes. Is there an official mixtape thread? I have a bucket to unload if I ever find it....
