Making Xbox Live (X360) better...

Wario64

works for Gamestop (lol)
I think everyone can agree that the whole X360 setup for gamertags, XBL and whatever is pretty sweet, but I think it can be improved. Some stuff they could add in the future (hopefully in dashboard updates):

- Group private chats
- Extensive Gamertag info (Preferred games, your availabilty schedule for XBL gaming, number of hours played for each game)
- Notifications via messages for new demos, BC additions and other marketplace content
- Option to boot up X360 into the menus (with or without a game in the disc drive)
- Option to transfer or copy save games over profiles
- Ability to mass message friends

Anything else that they should add?

Keeping demo's available for download longer before moving them out of the rotation.
I like how they keep adding new demos consistantly, but I'd like older game demos to be an option as well.

I just got a 360 yesterday, and can only download the Condemned and Q4 demo right now.

I still want the ability to organize my friends list. It would be great to add a group association to the name... like GAF, Family, etc. And like you said, have the ability to mass message the recipients.

Are you sure? I haven't checked in a while, but if you go to "Trailers and Demos" -> "List by Games" and then look into Kameo, Fifa, Madden, NFS and NBA Live, the demos aren't there anymore? Are the trailers still there?

- Option to "pay-per-minute" kinda like with cellphones. This needs nice TRC rules though so i would get some warning when my time is near done.

Haha, you're right. I was just coming back to correct myself ;P

Not 2 minutes after posting did I find exacetly what you just said in the download section :)

Yup, enjoy downloading. Don't forget to go to the "Digital Entertainment" sections and get some of the stuff they got there.

A more sophisticated download manager that handles downloading in the background, queued downloads, automatic shutoff on download completion, etc.

What would be a situation where you'd need to do this? It would take away the point of the achievements system, I would think.

- Group private chats

I think in-dashboard group chats would be good for game planning and such. In-game...mixed. Imagine playing an FPS against a team of people where the dead players can still inform on locations of the other team while just spectating 'cuz they all file into a group chat.

Luckily Microsoft have a reputation of constantly upgrading and improving XBL so I don't think we'll have much to worry about.

Good stuff. I'd also like to see a better download manager that works in the background. I imagine this in the works because when a download is complete you get an XBL notification which is pretty useless since you have to stare at the download screen.

I'd like better organization of the marketplace overall -- specifically with regard to new updates. Right now its almost impossible to tell when there is something new on the marketplace unless you check some websites like majornelson.com. Even then he updates by hand which is slow and he misses some.

- Option to boot up X360 into the menus (with or without a game in the disc drive)

See my tips and tricks thread:

The whole marketplace needs a redesign, badly.

Well my profile is Xbox Live silver, but my bro's profile is upgraded to gold to play online, so the only way for me to play online (without spending more $$$) is to play on my bro's profile

Let's say I'm playing DOA4 and I've unlocked pretty much all secret characters and now I want to play online. I go over to switch to my bro's profile but I can't play as any secret characters since nothing is unlocked on my bro's profile. So now I have to unlock everything again just to use those secret characters online.

Maybe it could disqualify the profile from earning achievements if they import save games? I dont know...I don't really care too much about achievements so I didn't really think about that.

They *really* need to put some kind of preview system in marketplace contents. How do they pretend I'll microtransact on Gamer Pictures or themes if I even don't know how are they looking?

And some more categorization would be welcome, too. The Marketplace is too messy.

If you look in the little preview pane before you purchase, it does show you a small 'preview' of the pictures/theme pages you're getting. you need to give it a sec to load

and the marketplace does a good job of categorizing stuff as it is. It could be improved, yes, but it's hardly 'messy'.

See the post I made recounting my search for content that I already knew was available.

Now explain how you would've found that content without actively searching for it.

Thats a good idea right there I've been wanting them to do. Not knowing who is from GAF sometimes sucks since I have to be careful on who I invite.

Another idea which I thought about after playing DOA4, they should create a sims type lobby for a group chat like they do in the lobby of DOA 4. With characters and whatever to make it enjoyable rather than staring at an xbox dashboard.

That's just it, though. Microsoft wants you to pay for your own membership. :) Or you could wait for those "free weekends." I like the achievements system too much to see it go to crap by letting people swap saves.

I have one question, what is this thing in the dashboard that says "Memberships"? Is that some kind of way to create some kind of clan or something? A GAF Sports Clan or a GAF PDZ clan would work.

- RSS feeds for all new content, game specific downloads, B/C updates, etc. One that is updated automatically as new stuff is added, not by a person.

- Manage friends list from Xbox.com (add, delete, send messages)

- Button to hold as your 360 is booting up to sign in as offline, when you only want to play a few minutes of Hexic or something and don't want a bunch of invites/messages etc.

- Overall leaderboard for highest GamerScores (like http://mygamercard.net/leaderboard.php)

- Hide games on your gamer card.. you might not want people to know you play barbies horse adventures. also the XBL Arcade demos show up there for some reason, you can't earn achievements with demos or anything, and they're even after you delete them. it would be nice to be able to hide them or something instead of having it clutter up my games list.

- Redo the marketplace. Navigation wise, downloading wise, etc. I want preview pictures for each gamerpic, theme, etc. I want things better organized too. Show only 720p trailers if your 360 is in HDTV mode. Give us a download queue, ability to leave the download window, our current download speed (like 500 kbp/s) in addition to the percentage.

- Option to transfer or copy save games over profiles

I think you can do that already. While trying to fix my DOA4 save woes I came across a "copy" command in the memory manager and it said something about copied games not being eligible for achievement awards.

And staying on topic, I love the way they have standardized profiles but MS needs to beat into the developers head a standardized way that they work. I swear every game I own has a different idea of how to handle the profiles.

Only thing that needs to be sorted is group chats. ITs pretty much perfect as it is

- Ability to mass message friends

you can already do this.

Anyway, heres one

: Dont let EA include Achievments in their games. Talk about taking away the whole meaning of achivements. Cocksuckers

I want them to improve the dashboard first.. For example true multi tasking in the sense the user has control over it and can do the multi tasking by themselfs. If I want to watch a dvd while dling a game, let me do it etc.

Just some clear documentation on how profiles, save games, and Xbox Live are tied together would help a lot...

It looks like the only safe way to have a profile that can move around is to put it on a memory card. But if I do that, is it OK to save my save games on my hard drive? If I forget the memory card at my friend's house and boot up my console, am I locked out from my own save games on the hard drive? What happens to my save games if I recover my gamertag at that point (or create a new profile with the same name)? If I back up my save games to a memory card without a profile on it, can anyone else see those save games if I put the memory card into another 360? Right now I have two profiles, one on the HDD that is XBL active and another on the memory card that has been disabled from signing into XBL because I recovered my gamertag to the hard drive, can I save to either device with no restrictions? I noticed that my XBL disabled profile isnt' reflecting my achievements, is there no way to bring it in sync?

Maybe they should add a "lightweight" profile so that you can sign in from a friend's console as a guest and earn achievements w/out having a "full" profile with savegames, etc...just thinking out loud.

marketplace should b setup cleanly.

music
movies
demos
arcade
game upgrades

click on one of those 5 items and it lists whats inside.

right now it can get a bit clustered when looking for a new demo to download.....its not as bad as day 1, but it should be cleaned.

As for the arcade downloads, why not list all the games and have the genre listed to the right of the name instead of making us look into each genre for new stuff? Or, at least put a star or different color on each genre that has a new item since our last visit so we dont have to look into each one each time.

and why does my music I am playing have to stop when leaving a game? Leave it alone MS.

System should boot to blades by default....even with game in drive.

I thought you could already mass message people?

I'd like to see group private chats, and a better organized Marketplace. That is all really. XBL on 360 already kicks ass.

I want an awesome clan system. Make it across the entire Xbox LIVE so that you can see the best clans in general, and not just the best clans of a certain game. I would love that along with the ability to make unique clan logos and such.

I second the background downloading thing. I should be able to play an offline game just fine without disturbing the download. And the boot to menu sound good, too. They really just need to add another blade or change one of them to be more of a home-page type of dealy where you can get all sorts of info in one place. A handy news-scroll ticker or links to new content and so on...They already have a small space for this, but all it ever really says is "Go to Xbox.com to discuss whatever!" Thanks, but I'd like to be able to find things out and discuss them through the dashboard.

-When the downloading is not done>>Go back the the main contents page>>the sign GOOD is appeared>>shold be fix to NOT DONE YET or something.
-Where the hell are the other Arcade live games? Still the same old shit.

All contents must be viewabled.
Web surfer must be added.

1.I will my Xbox360 can read VCD damnit.
2.The reason why we can't watch movie (divx ,xvid etc) when your Xbox360 is not connected to PC using Media center?
MS want to sell the crap Media center as stand alone. What a selfish.
PS3 (which I will not buy it) will let you watch the stuff without using media crap.

- Download while playing?
- Group voice chat lobbies with invites (for GAFers to set up games and matches)
- Notifications of new downloads and/or released titles in the dashboard and/or with a system message.
- DVD-autolaunch no-no.

Xbox 360 doesn't have a Windows Media Connect streaming video player implemented. If it did, you'd be able to watch streaming Mpeg/WMV video from any Windows XP PC (No Media Center Edition required).

It's your assumption that the reason this is unimplemented is because MS wants to screw you and not because they were unable to get a good streaming WMC video player coded up and tested in time for launch. Definitely a great addition for a free update in the future.

DivX is a commercially-licensed codec. That means Microsoft would need to pay royalties to DivX Inc. for every console containing the codec. Could it happen? Sure, if enough people really wanted it and made it known.

XviD is open source code under the restrictions of the GNU GPL. There's no way in hell Microsoft or most other commercial software companies would add support, because it would require them to make their entire source code for the module using the code available to the public.

So no, it's not entirely as simple as "MS wants to screw people into buying Windows: Media Center Edition and obviously hates codecs that they didn't write because they are free downloads on my PC".

You should be able to mark all the demos/videos you want to download and they go to a queue. So when you are going to sleep you let it downloading everything you want.

- The more Microsoft Point you buy in one click the less you pay. (ie 1MP=100, 10MP=900, 100MP=8.000).
- Give *some* MP to those who get all the gamerscore available in a given game (yeah, I know, wishful thinking)

-Disable autorun
-Stream video without buying a new OS
-Link d/l (marketplace) videos to the video section
-navigate the dash without cancelling a download.
-Customize what blades you want displayed
-RRS feed of 360 news.
-ability to send MD to people as gifts. There is no better way to get somone to play an arcade game with you then to buy it for them. :P
-cddb intergration with streamed music. If wmp can do it, so can 360.

Basically, I want a new dashboard. Preferably XBMC.

I think in the future microsoft will add a community blade that features group chats via public / private chat rooms.

...and maybe microsoft will offer live streaming content through some sort of "Xbox TV" blade or something

also I think Xbox Live Marketplace needs to be organized a bit better... in a year or two it will be a chore to navigate through all the content

It isn't a real preview pane, but simply a "banner image" that the content publisher can create: it can be only a logo (like in the EA contents) or it can present some of the contents like a little preview. But, even when the publisher is so smar to use it as a preview, it's really too smal for thi use. We need some real preview, something that shows the content itself and not some arbotrary image made by the publisher.

and the marketplace does a good job of categorizing stuff as it is. It could be improved, yes, but it's hardly 'messy'.

Try looking at "Themes & Gamer Pictures": actually I have to scroll down *9* pages of NBA Live 06 contents before reaching something else. I even can't change the sort order to alphabetic. I call this messy.

And one more useful change: an option to remember my online status would be welcome, ie if I put myself as Invisible, I'd like the console to remember it after I turn it off and on.

How about putting downloaded videos that are non-game related into the Video section of the Media blade, and not the Trailers section of the Game blade? Why even have the Video section anyways? Just call it "Watch the stupid shit we included on the HD and nothing else" blade.

I like these three a lot, especially the notifications. Hopefully we'll see this stuff in the first Live 360 update, whenever that may be...
