Lol, you don't see how someone could find those movies pretentious? Lol ok fine. The structure of those movies, the way they are shot. A lot of the symbolism that is in those movies. The minimalistic approach those movies have in regards to horror. It's funny how you put down one subgenre of horror to prop up another. How are the "pretentious"? Funny when I used to mod a horror group on fb I'd read that complaint every day from people stuck on trash 80's slashers and garbage like James Wan's trash.
Ignore him. A24 has some of the best films of the past decade whereas James Wan has more or less consistently churned out crap.
edit: upon further reflection, I think The Conjuring may be the only film he’s released that wasn’t garbage. I hope I’m missing something, because that’s a horrible track record if I’m not.

Eh, best movies of the past decade is stretching it. Fine that you love those movies, not a problem. Hell, I like The Witch and Hereditary. I don't think they're bad movies. But will I go back watch them again on multiple watches? No really. The only A24 movies I outright didn't like were Black Coat's Daughter and Midsommar.
I also liked Dead Silence and Insidious. The Conjuring 2 wasn't bad either by Wan.
Looks terrible, like Wans entire catalogue. It also looks fun. I'll probably watch it.
Because it completely falls apart in the final act.How can you fucking hate hereditary?!
How so?Because it completely falls apart in the final act.
The sister telling the police she knew it cracked me up. Overall, I enjoyed it quite a bit and WHEW, what a rollercoaster of emotional response. Parts of it are really scary, parts are head scratching, and the ending is just a whole new level of silliness. Heck of a ride.I actually loved this movie! A couple of scenes near the end were cracking me up
I love the cheese in movies but this one felt more like trolls 2 than Evil Dead, we could argue that James Wan had or not the intent for the movie to come off as a parody, but without that context, there is no clear indication or meta commentary within the movie about how ridiculous everything feel because of the tone shifts, my problems with the movie is not that it just jumps the shark repeatedly but how bad the tone and performances are.If this was intended as an homage to 70's and 80's schlock it was a lot of fun. Some of the stuff is pretty much Evil Dead style.
People are not sure if Wan intended it like this. And of course, they also have problems to accept, that somebody like him maybe into things like that. I would add, have you seen the movie poster, of course, it was intended.
Yes, Sam Raimi would have been maybe better. But he left schlock for big-budget Hollywood.
You're in for a treat. It's full of stuff like that.Watching now.
"You don't have to stay here tonight, you know..."
"It's my home! I don't want to lose this too!"
I think I yelled at her (my TV) during that part!!!Watching now.

I think they've easily put out some of the best movies of the past decade. In no particular order:Eh, best movies of the past decade is stretching it. Fine that you love those movies, not a problem. The 1st half of In Fabric was good too. Blackcoat's Daughter is one of my favorites.I think they've easily put out some of the best movies of the past decade. In no particular order:
Green Room
The Lobster
De Palma
Swiss Army Man
The Blackcoat's Daughter (this movie is fantastic you heathen)
A Ghost Story (not for everyone, but so, so, sooo good)
The Florida Project
Killing of a Sacred Deer
Hereditary
Mid90s
Climax
The Last Black Man in San Francisco
Midsommar (one of their weaker films, but I still liked it)
The Lighthouse (easily film of the year for me, easily in my top 5 films of the past decade, arguably better than The Witch)
Good Time
Uncut Gems
The Witch
Ex Machina
Enemy
Under the Skin
Spring Breakers (I know this isn't for everyone, but I'm a huge Harmony Korine fan and I absolutely loved this movie)
The quality of that list is absurdly good. It's actually pretty fucking ridicilous that it is all A24. This is just what came to mind, I'm sure I'm missing some great flicks.
This plus the police station fight are the highlights of the movie for me, i think it maybe needed a little more of that since the expectations are set in the first scene of the movie. This totally worked for me, between the classic Italian horror homage to Wan's stylish scene construction and all the outlandish elements. Loved that chase scene across downtown Seattle at night with the detective.
The hopes are into him making it bad on porpuse, like a parody, it kinda makes sense to me but at the same time i don't see anything gained from the bad performances.I watched this last night. If I had to rate I would prob give it a 60% rating. Writing was awful and reminded me of a sharknado quality movie with a bigger budget. Last part got way too goofy and felt they could have had a better ending.
It’s a one and done movie for me. Prob the worst of his movies. I had higher hopes.
If this was done on purpose then good job. I thought this was supposed to be a serious movie like conjuring level. The hopes are into him making it bad on porpuse, like a parody, it kinda makes sense to me but at the same time i don't see anything gained from the bad performances.
Raimi movies are full of cheese and have good performances, so i'm on the edge buying the theory of this being a prank movie.
Who knows. The movie is confusing in that respect. If this was done on purpose then good job. I thought this was supposed to be a serious movie like conjuring level.
Yes, exactly! This totally worked for me, between the classic Italian horror homage to Wan's stylish scene construction and all the outlandish elements. Loved that chase scene across downtown Seattle at night with the detective.
Lol, alright clearly you haven't been on the internet that long if that's your conclusion. Ah yes, equating discussing shit on the internet is shouting from the rooftops. Calm down there, buddy. There're just fucking moviesThat's right. I don't know how. People with shit taste love to shout it from the rooftops.
