I hate depressing news stories, but this one is just so bizarre. I saw it on the local news tonight along with stories of kidnappings and hit-and-runs and I thought it couldn't possibly be real. Did a search online and found the full story:

CHARLOTTE — Police said a man was trying to get his two young children out of a locked car on Sunday when he fell on a knife he had grabbed to try to open the car's window.

The knife stabbed Miguel Angel Rivera Lemus, 22, in his chest. He later died at Carolinas Medical Center.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg homicide detectives were still investigating the death on Sunday, but said in a news release that "all of the evidence and witness statements point to (Lemus' death) being a tragic accident."

Authorities said Lemus and his common-law wife had gone to their south Charlotte apartment Sunday afternoon to pick something up before they headed out for another errand. Police said the couple, without realizing it, closed their car doors with their keys and children inside.

Frantic, police said, the couple tried to find a way to open the car. The wife searched for a spare set of keys. Lemus, meanwhile, grabbed a large butcher knife which police believe he was going to use to pry open the car's window.

But as Lemus went out of the apartment, he fell down six stairs and landed on the knife.

Police said he managed to return to the apartment unit and asked his wife to call 911. She had been able to get the children out of the car using a spare set of keys.

The children were not injured, police said.

Police and Medic arrived at the apartment unit around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, saw an injured Lemus and rushed him to the hospital. He died a short time later.

It's like something out of one of those Final Destination movies.

Wow, that's just bad luck :(

I bet he fell down because he was worrying too much

EDIT: how do you lock yourself out with the keys still in the car?

Wife killed husband. Why would he get a knife to open door if the wife had a spare set of keys? check for recent insurance polcies: check

I was parking my car once and there was a really cool song on the radio, so I left the car running while I got out and locked the door.

D'ur.

Like, how do you lock the door without a key?

Those automatic locks cars have nowadays, or the switch on the inside of the door that locks it without a key.
Oh...

Do the engineers not see how those could lead to obvious problems? :lol

yeah many cars automatically lock the doors if you close the doors of a car if the keys are inside. my cousin has gotten locked out of his car a few times.

especially since he apparently impaled his heart or lungs to die yet had the strength to reclimb stairs. Wife calls 911 then rather than staying with her dieing husband runs to get the kids. Seems really odd.

Its kinda sad to think this way but enough of society has took a shit dive that you gotta question this stuff anymore

*Enter Horatio*
"If that is the case... what was the wife doing in the kitchen?"

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH

Crazy story though, makes you appriciate the "don't run with scissors"-rule.

There must be blood in the stairwell to verify the story.

What I'm confused about is the sense of urgency that drove him to run around with a butcher knife. Seriously, your kids are not going to suffocate while you go to get the spare set of keys, on top of the fact that the keys are IN the car WITH the kids.

Sad story for the children, but the man was pretty stupid. The first thing he thought of getting was a butcher knife? I mean, a thousand things would have worked better and were less likely to accidentally harm him...

This story doesn't make any sense.

Wife murdered him, end of story.

wait?
