A jury on Wednesday convicted a Minnesota man of assault for opening fire and wounding five mendemonstrating against the fatal shooting of a black man by Minneapolis police officers.

Allen Scarsella, 24, of Bloomington, was found guilty on all charges of assault and riot. Scarsella showed no emotion as the Hennepin County jury’s verdict was read.CBS Minnesota reports that the jury deliberated for seven hours.

Scarsella was accused of shooting and injuring the five African-American men at a Black Lives Matter protest after the police shooting death of Jamar Clark in 2015.

Scarsella and three other men, all wearing face masks, went into an encampment outside a police station in north Minneapolis to livestream Black Lives Matter protests that had closed down a city block. Scarsella, who has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, brought a .45-caliber handgun and fired at demonstrators in what his attorneys say was self-defense.

Prosecutors argued that the shootings were racially-motivated. The station reports that Scarsella was identified in a video taken the night of the shootings waving a handgun and making racially-charged statements about the Black Lives Matter protesters. In one video that was shot in a car while Scarsella and a friend were driving to an earlier protest, Scarsella is heard saying he is “on a mission” and “locked and loaded” while holding a gun.

Prosecutors accused the men of being white supremacists and trying to disrupt the protest. Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said his office will seek “the stiffest possible sentence” for Scarsella. He is scheduled to be sentenced on March 10 and could face up to 19 years in prison.

The three other Minnesota men with Scarsella at the time - Daniel Macey of Pine City, Nathan Gustavsson of Hermantown and Joseph Backman of Eagan - are charged with second-degree riot and aiding an offender. All three have pleaded not guilty and await trial. In December, attorneys for the three men denied that their clients are racist. Macey is Asian, the others are white.

Did they work out who he got the ideology from? were they in contact with anyone else outside the group (that are totally not racist say their attorney)? I'm surprised they haven't cracked anything online. How can one tiny group do this in isolation. There must be websites with ideological material, who supplied him the weapon? I agree, this human just made a mistake, there is no point in ruining the rest of his life. Im sure he has already been punished enough. For reference, a black man in Georgia who had a violent outburst over a wrong order at Dairy Queen, threatened a bystander with a knife, and went on a chase got seven years for assault and DUI, along with 20 years of probation. Let's ignore probation while we do the rough math:

Five people shot (a potentially fatal condition) garnered 19 years, or about about 3.8 years per person for this white dude. A single person being threatened with a knife equals aggravated assault, which in Georgia earns you between a 1 and 20 year sentence depending. This black dude only threatened one person (which if I'm recalling appropriately from the hilarious news story about it was a white father), meaning if we subtract the maximum sentence you can get for a DUI here (a year), his victim accounted for six years of his sentence.

Ah, yes, no reason at all that being in prison would magnify those views. After all, if there's anything I've learned from Oz and prison documentaries, it's that organized white groups in prisons are usually pretty open-minded and inclusive. They won't stand for shenanigans like this, I'm sure.

Anyway, yeah, what a pittance this is to the cause of justice. He'll be out in 8-9 years with "good behavior" and learn fuck all. He'll be emboldened by his time inside and end up enshrined as a fucking hero to these numbskull white supremacist groups. They'll set his ass up and he'll end up right back on the streets spreading his misery and hate wherever he goes.

I hope every night from now until his release is a nightmare.

Sentences are usually served concurrently when they are all part of a single act. Unless there is something particular to MN law.
