Many executives of game software companies sat grim faced through the PlayStation 2 presentation as the machine's dramatically improved graphic handling capabilities are certain to create a big divide in the game software industry.

"No more than five software companies can develop games that take full advantage of the PlayStation 2's capabilities," Tomoyuki Takechi, president of Square Co. (9620), said. Takechi predicts the release of the PlayStation 2 will draw a clear line between software makers who have computer graphics prowess and those who do not.

remember those comments from 1999 ? :lol

I cannot wait to hear the comments from Japanese software houses this time, when & after PS3 presentation happens.

"PS3 will eat your children!"

There's always been a divide between good and bad developers. Many more devs than expected have been able to extract great performance from PS2.

seriously, it's like Konami, Capcom, Square, Ubi, and like a thousand games using Renderware.

edit: you could probably add Polyphony, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac to that list too, but it's pretty short.

Namco, Sega (OK, only for VF4) SCEJ, SCEE, SCEA teams, Sucker Punch, Snowblind, Melbourn House (Transformers), Inevitable (Area 51), Criterion (Burnout 2 and 3 use Middleware, but graphics engine is anything but)

There's actually quite a lot of teams, even small ones, who developed impressive in-house engines.

Midldeware will absolutely rule next gen though, at least I think so.

It's strange... that was said about this gen..... did Middleware rule this gen?

HL2 using Havok and All 3 GTAs using Renderware would say yes.

I'm talking in # of games developed using them... It was said that most games this gen would end up being completely developed using middleware because the machines were just too complex.

I don't think that ended up being the case... the Havok engine was used for alot, but it's just a piece... I think there were still alot of custom game engines built this gen... and it'll be interesting to see what happens next... I still think we'll see more custom game engines than titles built completely on middleware... though I think we'll continue to see pieces like Havok used as well...

There is a tremendous number of games using renderware and other third party tools to power their graphics and that without including the rather large video/sound middleware department, which is also quite lucrative. Graphics middleware + video middleware + sound middleware + physics middleware = >60% of games (that's my ass talking, but you get the idea)
