March Onward Penguin Soldiers!

So I went to a movie today. The theatres are basically packed with shit movies like Stealth and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and I already saw Wedding Crashers so that wasn't an option. It was either The Devils Rejects of March of the Penguins so keeping House of 1000 Corpses in mind, I quickly decided on March of the Penguins.

It was slow, being that it's a documentary about Penguins... but the vast number of sweet, adorable penguins contained within this movie made it more than worth it. If you aren't shy about going to a G Rated movie about Penguins, I suggest you go see it.

NOW.

Agreed. I couldn't find a single soul to go to this with me, so I went by myself damnit.

Only regret is that the cameras used were not the greatest quality. I mean, they were fine for your standard TV doc, but especially given the beauty of the environment I wish they had brought along much better equipment.

Definately a good movie though, if a bit slow overall. (And some of Morgan Freeman's narration was a bit.. over the top.)

If it means you'll enjoy the movie more, then yes. Come here, Ronco guarantees this will be fast and painless.

Why are women so cruel?!

I cannot wait for the DVD, I'd love to see the original French cut of the film (the English language release has different music, five minutes of footage cut out and Morgan Freeman's narration).

March of the Penguins
UNRATED EDITION

The version you couldn't see in theaters!

March of the Penguins is awesome -- and don't let the G rating fool you, it has violence, sex, blood, and death!

That giant petrel is a son of a bitch. Only one in the whole film and I wanted to make the entire species go extinct! Don't mess with li'l pengy and his cousins!

Interested in the French cut, but I heard it has techno music in it... wtf?

Look up Emilie Simon's album "La Marche de l'Empereur". Here's a link to it on iTunes Music Store. (note: you must select the French iTMS selected to see that) While it's limited to 30-second samples, those and her previous album suggest some quality work. It's more trip-hop, but I'll bet it was removed because it has quite a bit of vocals (some in French).

While I'm peeved that they changed the music for the US release (I dislike any kind of change from the original cut for anything) I don't think that's a very good reason to skip out on the film. Hopefully I can see it at some point.

I wanna see it so bad, but it's not showing in our town :(

Don't you live in Alaska? Couldn't you just, like, tape Penguins in your backyard or something? :P

(I know, penguins don't live in Alaska...)

I'm not upset about the changes, and I'm not boycotting the film if I came off that way, I saw this on opening day July 2nd. Just curious about the differences once the DVD comes out.

From what I understand, the French version has voices dubbed in so that the pengins are "talking" to each other about their hopes and dreams and other such nonsense. If that's the case, then I think I'd like the English version better.

Still need to see it, though. Luckily, there's a theater by me that's showing it. It's just a matter of making time to see it.

No way... Found these in some reviews from the Seattle papers.

"The original narration in French reportedly has actors "playing" penguin characters, who coo sweet nothings to one another. Thank goodness we get a less-romanticized narration in English. Emperor penguins are not just like us, or any other creature you can name — which is why they're so utterly fascinating."

"The version of "March of the Penguins" that opens in theaters here will not be the same as the version shown in France and most other countries. The credits for the American version say it is "based on the screenplay by Luc Jacquet and Michel Fessler," which means that Warner Bros., the American distributor, chose to create a different soundtrack. The new narration was written by Jordan Roberts and spoken by Morgan Freeman.

"The American version differs slightly," said Jacquet. "The French version has three different narrators [suggesting penguin voices], which allowed us to bring the audience closer to the penguins, to make them feel what they were experiencing."

Also thought this was cool:

"While he was shooting the movie, a documentary about its production, "Of Penguins and Men," was also being filmed. It has been shown in other countries and will be part of the DVD when it goes to video release."
