Mario DS controls

Can someone gimme some tips on the best way to control this game. Right now Im in standard mode, and when I use the thumb strap, I keep going of the edge of my screen. How can I best control this game?

If you're using the Touch Screen, you should put it on touch mode, It's definetely the easiest way to use the screen as well as the buttons.

And if you keep going to one corner of the screen, that happens to all of us... just keep playing and you start getting better at picking your hand up and putting it down again in the middle.

If you just want to use Standard Mode - I reccommend using the D-Pad.

well obviously even nintendo doesn't know where to begin with that. you're going to have to experiment and find your own comfort level.

Jonnyboy117 did the whole game in dual-mode using the stylus to control Mario with his right hand and d-pad button mappings. I have no clue how.

I'm using touch mode personally. Movement with my left, action with my right.

That's how I play too, I find it far more precise. Seriously, if you're finding the controls awkward and haven't tried it, give it a go.

I switch spontaneously. Thumbpad, stylus, and Dpad; they all work for me.

I'm up to 75 stars with just the Dpad so far. Working out fine for now, but we'll see how the later levels turn out.

Stylus control for me. After 10 stars it feels almost perfect. After 20, you're set.

My little brother has used the d-pad all the way through and he has 142 stars - so I guess each person will find the style that suits them best.

I'm a d-pad man myself. I'm up to 40 stars and have had no problems with the controls, I find the improved camera does help quite a bit though.

Of the other two, I found the stylus and d-pad combination to be pretty good. Can certainly see how people could find it the best method, not too found of the thumbstrap though. I just find it a bit uncomfortable.

I only played for 15 minutes, but so far, both d-pad and touch mode control like crap IMO. This game desperately needs an analog stick...

Try it with the stylus in dual mode. I swear to god it couldn't be more precise with an analogue stick.

You guys who can play this game with the d-pad amaze me.

I use Standard Mode (with the thumb nub) and provided that you're patient enough to give it a little while, it'll make for an adequate replacement to the analog stick. It's not as good as an analog stick, but it's certainly adequate.

Touch mode + thumb nub is the way to go. It takes a while to learn, but eventually it works OK. Never quite as good as an analog, though.

As for your thumb going to the edge of the screen, that's going to happen in any mode. You have to re-center your thumb back on the screen. Kind of annoying, but eventually you can get used to it.

If you're using Standard Mode with the thumb strap you really should be using Touch mode.

yeah...

with that said I'm not digging my DS.

I started out using the dpad, but found it annoying to have to hold down the Y button constantly. I swtiched to touch mode with the thumb strap, and although I found it hopelessly sloppy and akward at first, after a few levels it became like second nature, the key is to lift your thumb to stop, without tactile feedback returning to the center point is near impossible.

A note to thise who think it would be better if the "cirlce" was fixed in place rather than follwing your thumb: Have you actually though through what the result would be?

I don't like the controls at all. None of the configurations really feel comfortable.

But what has been bothering me almost as much is the fact that when I make mistakes (which can be attributed to the sloppy control scheme probably about 50% of the time), the game is less forgiving than the Nintendo 64 version. In the Nintendo 64 version, if you got hit by an enemy, the game didn't take the control away from you except for a very insignficant fraction of a second. But in the DS version, I've been hit by a Goomba and then hit repeatedly after that until I died because the damn thing wouldn't let me regain control of Mario quickly enough!

Another thing: in this version, when you run into the purple poisonous fog, your health doesn't just gradually erode. Instead, Mario stops occassionally stops as if he's been hit by a normal enemy. And as such, you momentarily lose control over Mario. Also, if you jump out of the gas and then back into it quickly, the game will automatically hurt you (and again, you temporarily lose control over Mario) when re-entering the gas. It doesn't make any sense. If anything, it should reward you for TRYING to stay out of the gas, and it did just that in the Nintendo 64 version.

It's little shit like that over and over that makes me hate the adventure mode.

I suggest using your thumb (no strap). Controls = touch mode.

The strap is probably better but I wanted to learn to play without it so I dont become too dependent on it.
I'm still amazed by how much control I have over Mario. It's definitely harder than analog. It's more rewarding too when you pull off a killer move.

It is annoying...even though every mario game that predates mario 64 required us to hold down a button to run fast.

It's almost a staple of the 2D Mario games. There wasn't a moment in SMW where I needed to walk slowly.

This is a lot easier if you're using Wario.

I'm still kind of dissapointed with the touch mode. Maybe it's just because the analog circle moves with your finger, but the thing is just so imprecise, and for a platformer, especially SM64, control is paramount.

The thing that probably annoys me most though, is that performing the run-one-direction-then-180-the-other-way jump is almost impossible to pull off with any consistency, and I used that pretty much constantly through SM64 =/

Maybe it's because you are using your finger? I use the Stylus in touch mode... Specifically, I use this stylus:

I find it a lot easier to use than the included one.

With it, I can do pretty much anything I could do w/ an analog pad. Literally the first time I tried using touch mode + Stylus, I cleared stage 2 w/ 128 coins in something like 4-5 mins.

Nah, I'm using the thumb strap, but still. This is probably the first time I've ever really hoped for a third party to step up with some better control devices. If they could make something that could fit around the whole thumb, or even something like the thumb strap but with a bigger pad and much better strap, I'd definitely buy it. Having to constantly fidget with the strap to keep it on and have it feel right is a huge hinderance to control, imo.

64 stars in, using the D-Pad, and the touch screen only when sneaking up on Piranha Plants. It was a little rocky at first, but now its fine.

Wait, how?

I held the stylus in my right hand and used it to control Mario, much like people are doing with the thumbpad in Touch Mode...but I find that the stylus is more comfortable. It has less friction, and if you really need to, you can look down at the touch screen and orient the stylus more easily than with your thumb covering most of the screen. The only moves hard to do with this configuration are U-turn jumps, which aren't really necessary at any point, and wall kicks, which are very rarely used. In Dual Mode, the character actions are mapped to both the D-pad and the face buttons. I used the D-pad with my left thumb: up jumps, right punches/licks, down crouches, and left re-centers the camera. You still have full camera control on the touch screen too, down in the bottom-right corner where the icons are usually out of the way. One of the best things about this setup is that you don't have to use the shoulder buttons at all, so you can lay the DS down flat on a table or other surface and just use your thumb or any other finger on the D-pad. This position makes it much more comfortable to hold the stylus for long periods of time, since it's basically just like writing on paper.

I'm right-handed, but this method works for lefties too...just use the face buttons instead of the D-pad.

I've got over 90 stars now using this technique. (Haven't played it much since writing my review.)

Whats the Gas?

I assumed the stuff in the actualy maze part of Hazy Maze Cave. As I said in my earlier post, it's a lot easier with Wario because he doesn't stop whenever he gets hurt and he can jump in and out of it without getting hurt.
