Mario Galaxy 3

I was thinking, with the release of Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2 plus the movie based on Galaxy , it would only be smart for the next 3d Mario to be Galaxy 3, what do you think!?

They sure aren't going to release Sunshine 2 after all that.

Considering that, by the moment the Bananza team will be able to ship its next project (next 3D Mario), you will probably have the third film out already for a while (that will surely have another setting), it's pretty unlikely.

I would love a Galaxy 3 more than anything. But I don't think Nintendo usually works like that. I bet the decision to make a Galaxy movie was only made in the last couple years, whereas I bet they've been working on the next 3D Mario for at least 5 or 6.

Is that the same team? I thought they had two teams working on this.

I think if the next 3D Mario was Galaxy 3, we probably would have gotten a teaser trailer for it at the end of last week's Direct. It would have driven hype for the movie and gotten people excited about revisiting the first two games.

Also, it has probably been in development since 2021-ish, when development finished on Bowser's Fury, while the Galaxy film started development in 2023 after the release of the first Mario Bros movie, so the game may have been too far along at that point to be retooled for the sake of brand synergy.

You thought Jaws 3-D or Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3D were great installments to their respective franchises, well, wait until you see Mario Galaxy 3D on the Virtual Boy coming soon to Switch 2. It's gonna be a bloodbath.

Also, just trying to predict literally ANYTHING Nintendo does is completely impossible.

Same studio, and pretty much the same people that worked on Odyssey when you look at the credits.

It's not quite that clear cut. There's a lot of overlap between the Odyssey and Bananza teams, but also a number of key staff missing, and this is especially true of senior people who you would expect to be actively directing the project.

Nintendo Forecast did a really thorough deep dive into the credits here:

The tl;dr is that the Bananza team appears to mostly be composed of junior staff, which is what you'd expect if there were two teams, with one starting Bananza right after Odyssey wrapped and another working on Bowser's Fury and then transitioning to the next 3D Mario around 2021. It's not quite that simple, because some staff probably moved between projects as they changed in scope, but that's the jist of it.

There's a lot of people who worked on Odyssey who weren't credited on Bananza. Bananza's director is a new hire, former Square Enix guy, so yeah it seems they have two teams now.

Personally I'd be fine with Galaxy 3 if they fundamentally reworked Mario's movement because I really don't like how he controls in the first two games, but I'd rather have something entirely new.

I would love to see Odyssey 2 with a different city theme. Loved that game.

I thought Galaxy was the pinnacle of 3D Mario. I was shocked they went back to Sunshine's design with Odyssey. I mean it was a good game, but felt like a step back.

I don't think you get Nintendo OP.

The movie represents an opportunity to rake in the licensing money and hawk a ton of old Mario games at full price (including Galaxy 1 and 2) at zero cost to Nintendo. Kerching!

If you are lucky, you will get an amiibo or two, and maybe a gamecube Mario on Switch online, launching with the film.

The next big Mario release, and the cost associated with it, is only necessary to keep the brand going when it is running out of steam.

Oh I get Nintendo! I've around since 1981, I kinda know what Nintendo is about, it's just a fun filled thread I tought about and would only make sense to have Mario galaxy 3 in the works , Galaxy Galaxy 2 are easily the best 3d Mario games even if Mario 64 worth more to me then the Galaxy series!

Isn't the Bananza team a sub-team of the main Mario studio at Nintendo?

Just looked it up: EAD Tokyo made the Galaxy games, EPD Tokyo made Odyssey and DK Bananza. Looks like they merged in 2015, but they also have multiple dev teams each working on various games.

So a Galaxy 3 next year is very possible IMO. I'd be down for it; Galaxy's one of my favorite games of all time.

I haven't watched the video, but on my own looking, I've seen plenty of lead/senior/management/supervisor staff across fields like design, programming, art, sound, etc. on Super Mario Odyssey being credited on similar or samey roles on Donkey Kong Bananza.
I don't doubt that 3D Mario could have somewhat started development a while back, but knowing of how these units operate with staff moving between projects, and the precedent of Bananza taking 8 years of development time, I'm personally not expecting the next EPD Tokyo game being released anytime soon.

EAD Tokyo and EPD Tokyo are the same development unit (unique for its location as the rest of internal development at NCL is located in Kyoto). The merger you're talking about is between Nintendo SPD and Nintendo EAD to form Nintendo EPD.

The "Mario team" as it's often called is larger than the rest of Nintendo's internal teams combined. They more than likely have another game ready for next Winter (3D Mario) and another game in early production for late '29.

I don't think they'll be doing Galaxy 3 as much as I'd like it they remastered the first two games, created a physical story book and amiibo to promote the movie only imo.

I think the next brand new concept 3D Mario will be revealed next summer and will be released next November. By that time the team will have released Bowsers Fury, Donkey Kong Bonanza and a 3D Mario in the space of 9 years. Not too shabby.

I agree and I think it could be awesome to get a full Galaxy 3 with more open-ended levels. Odyssey was great of course, but it's been a very long time since a new 3D Mario and I'm excited for the next one, whatever it ends up being.

The name is right there. Super Mario 3D Galaxy. Maybe they can do some kind of multiplayer Galaxy game that combines the MP elements of Super Mario 3D Land and World with Galaxy.

Unless they have been making a new Galaxy and that is part of the reason why we're seeing a Galaxy film? They also hinted to Yoshi at the end of the first film. Who knows.

Nintendo doesn't operate like that. The movies and games are independent. They wouldn't rush a game to market to meet a movie deadline.

That's what shitty licensed movie tie in games do. Those games always junky as a rule of thumb. BEcause the priorities are having product on the shelf for the movie release and using the same characters/concepts/narratives as the movie.

Nintendo would do better to make a Mario: Jurassic Island.

Find a new gimmick rather than going back to the Galaxy well.

Super Mario Universe. Larger, more open worlds and the ability to travel among planets.
It'll be called Mario Universe.
Yes! Combine the Galaxy & 64 Odyssey 3D Worlds/BF into a cohesive whole. Wish they would do the same for Zelda and combine Wind Waker(sea) & Skyward Sword(sky) OOT/MM into a cohesive world with BotW/TotK.

Make sailing & flying more meaningful instead of a physics gimmick and islands/caverns deeper more explorable dungeons with meaningful items to traverse them.
