Mario Kart DS is online

Why? There's no evidence that EAD learned anything from MK: DD. Maybe they did, maybe they didn't, but just as I have no evidence, neither do you, and history is on my side.
Mario Kart: Double Dash wasn't developed with online play in mind, and LAN play was an after-thought. Unlike Mario Kart DS, it seems.

Supposedly, this is what is says...

No. 191|DS - June 2005 - By now plumber turned action-game superstar Mario has spent more hours behind the wheel than he has behind the toilet plunger. The year 2005 will be a banner one for Mario Kart fans: This DS version will be the first to offer online multiplayer karting action, and Nintendo and Namco will also bring Mario Kart to arcades as an all-new, four-player, sit-down racer with new tracks and power-ups

"WOOOOOOO!!!"

Mario Kart Online + Advance Wars 3 Online make my Nintendo DS worth the admission price alone. Online enabled, I could seriously see myself coming back to these games years down the line.

I suspect Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles and Metroid Prime Hunters will also be online this fall.

It really depends on how much there is in the game. I want atleast 30 stages, more battlemodes/items/coins back/etc. If this is just a basic Mario Kart thrown online then I''ll probably just wait for the new Jak racing game.

What's wrong with wanting alot more? From what has been shown it doesn't look that much diffrent than past Mario Karts. other than the fact it's online. I already have Super Mario Kart, Super Circuit, Mk64 and DD. Added to the fact that this is a DS game, meaning they don't have to spend alot of time with graphics/etc...why can't they add alot more content?

Well chances are it's gonna have 16 stages like (all the?) previous MKs in the series.

Well Namco's game is goint to have 24. I don't see why this game shouldnt have as many if not more.

I think the old SNES tracks are in this game (seemed to remember that from the older screenshots), just like Super Circuit on the GBA, only in 3D.

Who knows N64 tracks could also be in it.

You could be looking at 30+ tracks. Online. Portable.

Maybe they'll have MK64 levels unlockable in addition to whatever's there.. That's what would get me to purchase this title.

pic is at OA if people want to see. its small though.

And for those who aren't members there, but are at IGN, that IGN link will take you to a thread with a pic (at least till IGN shuts it down).

But the real Q is this: Did Nintendo tell them this info exclusively, or did they take the wireless 8 player that was confirmed at GDC and errantly run with it.

I don't see how games other than the likes of Animal Crossing would work well enough online for the DS. Animal Crossing is slow paced enough for you to have time to write messages with the keyboard-menu, but imagine in a game like Crystal Chronicles where at least one of your party members stand still every other minute to ask if he could pick up that potion or something like that.

Yeah. It's too bad there's no way to have a headset or something.

I gotta say: I for one will be happy if voice chat isn't a utilized feature. Just include some form of Pictochat and I'd be happier. This would allow for fast communication even for people who can't type and it would solve the problems of playing on public servers with voice.

Edit: And for a game like Mario Kart, having a number of button assigned character taunts is enough in-game chat for me.

That would rock if this had all of the tracks from SMK. I'd kill for at least the Ghost Valley and Bowser castle tracks. And the battle mode tracks.

Awesome, this will be the first MK i buy since SNES', only back when i was a kid i had friends willing to play multiplayer, when n64 was out i was in high school and i had a lot more stuffs to do then waste time at home (home was for eating, sleeping and thats it :p), and now that im an adult, split screen multiplayer games simply are meaningless to me, all my friends are outside the region, we see eachothers once in a while and when we do, its not to waste time on games. So online is the only option i have for mutliplayer gaming nowadays.

Confirmed online-

Animal crossing
Mario kart DS

Safe to assume they're online-

Advance wars 3 (unless nintendo thinks that TBS is not suited for online gaming? i hope not :(
Zelda 4 swords
FF CC
Goldeneye RA
Bomberman
Jump super stars (teh killer app!!)
Pokemon diamond & pearl ?
sport games ala madden 2k6

Out of that list i would buy AC, MKDS, AW3, zelda 4 swords, FFCC, goldeneye and jump star, the last 4 if they're online of course. That would be such a killer online lineup :D

Every video game message board that allows scans has this so people don't have to suffer by going to OA to see this.

Everyone keeps saying AW is online, is there any news about this? Or is it just that it should be. I could care less about Kart racing, but AW online is a must buy title to me.

Its mostly assumptions but with this tidbit

"According to Iwata, developers currently working on short-range wireless games should be able to easily expand many of their projects to include wireless internet play"

Make it seems like they're planning on making all their wifi multiplayer games online ready

This thread is like a few days old now, DCX. It's from EGM, and their April Fools joke was last months issue.

Did we ever get confirmation that this was in EGM, btw?

yup, its the one with the Phantasy Star cover. page 61 if you're interested.

Yay! Still worried about the wires crossed thing, though. News just seems a little too good to be true. I just figure that if it was going to be online, they would have announced it at GDC when they spoke about Animal Crossing. Who wrote the article? (hoping it's someone who posts here so we can be sure he got his facts straight :))

It's part of pre-E3 surprises, me thinks, along with things like PSU and Soul Calibur III being PS2 exclusive.

Heh. Something is conspicuous by its absence.

I would love Mario Kart DS to be online but wouldnt the DS's lack of a decent ammount ram prevent it from working well online? I believe DS only has 4 megs of ram would this be enough to support 4 player kart racing with lobby features and voice chat? I hope I am wrong, but I would think not.

Considering there are fully featured multimedia OSs that can boot off a floppy, 4MB is plenty with good programmers. Not like you need super-high-res quality on a DS screen.
