Last May, Nintendo gave the world its first glimpse of the upcoming DS role-playing game Mario & Luigi 2 at E3. The game features prepubescent versions of its part-time plumbing protagonists, but Nintendo didn't give a reason for the pair's pint-sized predicament.

The latest issue of Famitsu is reporting that Mario & Luigi 2 takes place in the very familiar Mushroom Kingdom, but in an unfamiliar time. Somehow, Mario and Luigi find themselves transported back in time, where they run into their childhood selves and are forced to once again save the land, this time from a mysterious alien force.

As the previously released gameplay footage suggests, players will have to use both the young and old sets of Mario Bros. in tandem to overcome the various obstacles throughout their journey. The timing-based battle system of the first game also returns, this time allowing for tag-team attacks from all four brothers.

The game will take advantage of the DS's double screen to cut down on confusion for players juggling the four different characters. The top screen is used for displaying the babies, while the bottom screen gets used for displaying the grown-up brothers, so a player doesn't lose sight of the characters when they separate to explore different areas.

Mario & Luigi 2 is currently under development by Alphadream, which also created the original installment. It is currently slated for a November release.

Good deal.

Didn't realize it was coming so soon...unfortunately my November is already booked (Zelda+DQVIII) :)

Is Excellent Adventure the actual title now?

And November's a bitch month already. Damn. Release it in October or early December even.

Hmm, here's something interesting, though -- Gamespot has what looks to be final box art and release dates for the games that, on the Nintendo press site, have no box art and only vague dates (a month, or "Q4"):

Metroid Prime Hunters: 10/17
Mario Tennis: 10/17
Mario Kart: 11/07
Animal Crossing: 11/21
Mario and Luigi: 11/21
Mario Party 7: 11/21

Sure, but they don't look like placeholders, which are usually for the first, fifteenth, or thirtieth of a month -- those are all Mondays.

In comparison, likely-2006 stuff like Electroplankton and Strikers *do* have placeholder dates (apparently there's like twenty Nintendo games coming out on 11/15! woohoo).

Seems to be coming out earlier than I expected. Good stuff.

I loved Superstar Saga. Brilliant game. Hopefully M & L 2 is just as hillarious as the first one.

I really hope M&L2 > M&L. I thought it was the least enjoyable out of the SMRPG games. I've been surprised before though.

I actually just finished Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga on my vaction last week. The last boss fight took me over 5 hours to complete. But victory was oh so sweat. I love all the puzzles in it. There was so many combinations on what you could do even with a small amount of options. I hope Alphadream can pull of the same exacution in this game and give it some more humor. The origanal was one of the funniest games since Sam and Max.

5 hours?

How the hell... :lol

5 hours?! It took me all of 20 minutes to beat her. Did you use your Advanced bros. moves at all? By the end of the game, I had mastered the timing on the bros. moves and was dealing ridiculous amounts of damage.
