Mario Maker Rumor Discussion Thread

I feel like it's a reasonable assumption that, given this thing appears to be using SMB1 graphics, and we already have a Wii U game dedicated to ripping apart NES games and rearranging them in different ways, that this is a Wii U eShop game from the NES Remix team.

It's not your 90 minute roundtable game, guys.

Neat idea, and a good foray into user-generated content.
Why are people acting like this is will be Nintendo's biggest announcement at E3 and their only idea going forward?
I'm expecting their biggest unveiling to be the new Zelda game.

Given the poor Wii U sales, Nintendo's difficult transition to HD, the modest fiscal year target, the lack of third party support, skepticism for any 'bombs' isn't that unwarranted.

Noticed what appears to be an ad in the background of this pic. Hard to make out what it is, but I think Mario seems fairly clear. Possibly Donkey Kong and the Brain Age guy as well (or at least some sort of face), but those are more guesses since it's so damn blurry.

Would be an interesting eShop download if true. I doubt that would be Nintendo's "Big guns" for e3 and I'm still banking on it being a Zelda teaser

Depending on the features and how they handle sharing I think it could be a cool little thing to play around with through online communities, but that's about it.
Basically. It's just not that big of a game idea tbh. Legit worried they'll spend 5+ minutes explaining that it's a rom hack maker. I'm even more worried they'll waste one of their roundtables on something boring like this.

All I can think about the actual game is sarcasm. "Finally, something to combat all those mario hacks and custom level packs that have been online for a decade."

Games that rely heavily on user generated content (LBP, Project Spark) don't really interest me, at least LBP had a decent story mode.

ehhhhh....

why are you so sure this seems like a cheap eshop game

Because of the nature of the idea. A full on Mario based stage editor game for 3DS? There would be a lot to talk about in a roundtable, like how does the editor work, or how is the content shared between users, is it just SMB1 based, or is there a possibility for SMB2 USA/SMB3 content? Is this a sort of NES Remix equivalent for 3DS? There's enough material to fill a 90 minute roundtable discussion.

I'm guessing that if Mario Maker appears at the 90 minute roundtable, it'll be A) be one of multiple games designed to utilize the NFC figurines, and B) a good chunk of those 90 minutes will be Q&A.

If true, please don't have this be a "big reveal" sort of game. This looks like one of those games you give a minute to then move on. This is NES Remix levels of uninteresting. :(

You don't even know what it is. I know people love jumping to conclusions, but still...

This would be neat, but what would really take it over the edge for me (and I've seen this discussed in this thread) would be crossover elements that draw from other classic NES games.

If it's NFC that would push it towards Wii U rather than 3DS right?
Really I'd be happy if it was cross-platform
and real
that way there'd be way more content to play.

This has big NFC potential.

Imagine buying a Donkey Kong figure and unlocking playable DK and DKC-style game assets.

The 90 Minute Roundtable is for a 3DS game.
The 3DS NFC isn't out until next year.
Wouldn't make a lot of sense, really, to have them focus on that right now.

It's called "Mario Maker", and looks to have NES style graphics. It seems to be a rom hack maker basically, probably with online sharing features for levels. It's name is pretty self explanatory tbh.

You know, at first I wondered if it was a shop of a picture of last year's E3.

I mean, the fact the only Smash characters shown are three of the characters focused on in last year's trailer made me wonder, but I guess if that was true, someone who was at E3 would've brought that up.

Pretty exciting either way. D.I.Y. was pretty great, so I'd love to see another "game creation" Nintendo title.

The person who originally posted this on /v/, which I assume where it originated, mentioned it have Free-To-Play elements though...

> LBP but with Mario > Releasing in October > F2P version with only SMB content

Looks like Cranky Kong.

Cranky Kong and Brain Age dude confirmed for Smash.

If they had enough stuff to fill 3 hours of footage, the Digital Event would be three hours. The length of this does not affect what they reveal. There is no magic time that they have to fill. Last E3 direct was mostly "Look at this", "That was Mario Kart 8, a small amount of details", "Now, look at this", etc.

It would be a good idea for them to spend some time discussing the features at the very least since its still a new game(though I'm expecting hear more during the interviews).

All based on single blurry pic. Simply amazing.

I don't know how in the world they would know that, unless the white subtitle text below Mario Maker says something about F2P that I can't make out.

If all this is real then I'm guessing the game is free to download and can get extra content through NFC figures.

I know the length of this reveal won't effect the overall time spent on other things, it's just that Nintendo has a history of spending too much time on specific things that I myself find incredibly uninteresting. I'd rather a briskly paced E3 event if it meant I avoided a long explanation of something I find super boring. The F2P aspects people are now mentioning are even making me less interested.

All based on single blurry pic. Simply amazing.
Am I not supposed to guess what it is? It's a game called Mario Maker, has a hand adding something with a stylus, and features retro graphics (like rom hacks). Combined with the fact NES remix 1/2 were moderate successes, it makes it a pretty obvious to guess what the game is going to be. The title and art in the photo make it pretty self-explanatory.

Assuming it's even real.

I really hope this isn't real. I'm not a fan at all of games like this, it seems like something that a lot of people would soon ignore after launch

You sure the person who originally posted it said that, or could it have been someone reposting it and claiming they originally posted it? That's happened on /v/ before. Kinda seems to happen often, actually.

Everyone in the thread acted surprised by it...it was the very first post that mentioned it, and I hadn't seen any other posts with the picture beforehand.

Oddly enough, people were saying it was sourced from NeoGaf, pointing to the Smash Brothers thread where I first saw it posted, but I'm pretty sure the /v/ thread was first.

All i can see is Villager from Animal crossing on the left and Brain Age guy on the right. Definitely can't see Mario or Dk

Interesting and possibly neat idea but don't see myself playing it. Fun for the Mario fans and good intro to level design for the you ones for sure.

Seems like a great idea if they do it right. If its true i hope it has tons of options and different gameplay mechanics so that users can make unique experiences.

The left looks like a giant Zangief face.

Street Fighter x Brain Age confirmed!

That's clearly a metroid.

So this isn't fake? Interesting........

To to be fair, level editors and games of the sort don't tend to hold my interest for very long so I dunno if I should get super hype for that :/

Cool idea if true. Stand is in an odd spot considering it's just character posters as you go down that section, which is why it looks fake.

Less odd when you see what is obviously a Smash Bros. hanging sign right above the center character demo station.

The problem with this idea is that Nintendo already tried user-generated content, and it bombed pretty hard and literally killed Wii momentum until Wii Sports Resort/NSMB Wii came out.

Assuming it's real, I suppose it could result in feature packs being sold as DLC too.

I really hope this isn't real. I'm not a fan at all of games like this, it seems like something that a lot of people would soon ignore after launch

The thing is, even if most people would initially ignore it, all it takes is dedication from a few people to make it worth it for the rest in the end. Those who get serious with these kinds of things can really achieve greatness with them.

If it were F2P, I wonder what elements would be locked behind the paywall/NFC unlocks. Would everyone be able to play all user generated stages regardless of whether they contained free or paid content and possibly have access to a limited, free SMB1 level creator as a taste? I guess NFC figures or DLC packs could be used to unlock new 2D Mario game assets along with a collection of Nintendo developed 'demo/standard' stages.

Seems long overdue, first thing I thought of was this quote from 2007:

The uncannily Nintendo-like Littlebigplanet was the first game that came to mind when Fils-Aime was asked which titles on other platforms he thinks would be interesting in Wii.

"I've been very intrigued with Little Big Planet," he says, before throwing in a little dig at Sony. "I don't know that it belongs on their [Sony's] platform," he says.

edit: another quote from 2009, this one from Miyamoto himself

Speaking to Joystiq, he revealed Nintendo has already discussed the notion of allowing players to create element of a future platformer, in a similar style to Sony’s LittleBigPlanet.

“This is an area that I have a lot of interest in, and I think that the side-scrolling Mario games in particular are well suited to that idea,” said Miyamoto.

A Mario game akin to LittleBigPlanet and using assets from the old Mario games sounds like a fantastic idea. I hope the potential of this isn't wasted.

A Nintendo leak? This is a first

I betting its real btw... why someone would fake this game? Its not like some huge shit, is just some quirky Nintendo shit.
