And even i am moderately surprised
Yes...

so at Fujirock they were 10 minutes late on stage, when they finally arrive, they play 50 odd minutes of random noise, and 3 minutes of coherent song as thier first track.

I have nothing against Mars Volta, but shit... when your saxophone/percussion guy picks up a flute, plays 2 notes, then picks up the sax to play a little, followed by puzzled whacking of random instruments, you start to get the feeling that it's all a big sham.

When they actually got their shit together, they were awesome.... unfortunately , this was for two 3 minute songs + 50 minutes of noise worth of appearance....

... humph.

it didn't help that a) i was piss wet through and they b) followed Boom Boom Satellites who DESTROYED EVERYONE. Holyfuckingshit. One of the best festival appearances i've ever seen.

Their live show has become progressively more fucked up and one long improv show as they go on. I saw them when they were a little less let's-just-wing-it, and even then, there were long stretches where you had no idea what was going on.

Fuck Mars Volta, when the hell is someone going to distribute Boom Boom Satellites in the US? I really want Full of Elevating Pleasures, but not for fucking $40. :(

From what I recall of the one time I listened to Frances the Mute, it sounds a lot like the live experience you just described, DCharlie. And I have to be honest, that's not a terribly good thing.

i caught them practicing in a lecture hall a couple days after a show on campus. they kicked my ass. it was awesome

... perhaps they weren't allowed to bring their supertanker full of heroin onto campus?

just to fill in - Fujirock : got to see :

Abura-something(?) - female guitarist + drummer. Very long legs, very crap songs.

Oceanlane - like every other US "punk" band, except made up of Japanese and Korean guys. Okay i guess.

Magic Numbers - freaky set of people, but kick ass folk rock. :)

Aqualung - good, but not really a festival band. I literally started falling asleep where i stood - that's not to say the music was boring, it just wasn't suited to a festival.

Futureheads - wasn't expecting much, but the boys from the north kicked ass albeit a bit formulaic.

Doves - sat and chilled out and listened - pretty awesome.

Boom Boom Satellites - as mentioned, utterly fantatic. The remix of outloud was particularly good, but christ - the first 2 songs they played nearly initiated an earthquake. Awesome AWESOME stuff.

Mars Volta - see above

New Order - trudging back to the buses , we caught a bit of them. Given me and JR had seen them a billion times, we decided to get our wet selves back to the hotel befor pnemonia killed us.

All in all, very good.

Just heard some samples on their website, and they sound awesome :D

That sucks that you had to sit through the ridiculous amount of ambience tMV uses going into overload during their concert. You can fast forward through it on the CD, but you sadly can't live.

Also, this Boom Boom Satellites band seems pretty good, I'll see if I can find their album somewhere now.

You can't find their music in the US anymore? That sucks. Weren't they signed to Sony or something like that?
