Man, just when I was starting to get a little down on the game, I just hit a perfect match. Just ran into some random fellow scrub in a player match and we were just about at the exact same skill level. His Chris / Chun / Iron Man team took it over my Trish / Dorm / Hulk crew 3-2 but just about every match came down to the wire or just a pixel of two of health.

This game really does get quite strategic when you are in close skill matches like this. Every last bit of red health, every bar of meter, and every inch of screen real estate matters. This game really nails it when everything clicks right.

This is true. I think the only failing of the game in its current state, is that the mid-level game is a little too easy for people - especially online - to devise easymode projectile-sentinel spam and rushdown rape teams. These leave little room for one to actually learn how to get better against. Especially when dealing with input lag situations that favor the rushdown pattern versus the defender who is trying to execute advancing guard, etc, correctly.

I just came from about 30 online matches this morning. 28 bad losses to a nearly infinite string of rape teams, most of which had Sent, Wolvie, or Akuma on them with a Zero sprinkled in for flavor. The last two matches: I actually had a guy and even did much better than usual... and he disconnected at the last second. And finally, I had ONE good match against another player using my exact team comp: Ryu, Arthur, Haggar. I lost, but it was down to the wire, and we were both at the same level of skill.

It was great because it was clear we were each trying to learn how to play out characters "correctly" and experimenting rather than trying to execute a basic lag-proof character loop over and over.

I am getting better and haven't lost hope. I know I'm going uphill with the characters I am using online (especially Haggar). For the moment, I do cringe when a team pops up with Sent and Akuma in it, because I know exactly what is about to happen.

Ironically, I have not fought one single Sentinel/Magneto/Storm team online yet!

Edit: I am also learning how to use Haggar's nearly invincible spinning clothesline assist and OMG, am I ever expecting to trigger rage quits with that thing when putting up a wall with Arthur.

I need to play more gaffers, but you guys are always silent in the damn channel. I have yet to lose in random player/rank matches, so i need my ass whipped.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I'm really beginning to hate Wolverine, Akuma, and Sentinel. I swear, every Akuma player I've run across has abused the hell out of Tatsumaki > Tenma Gozanku. Just sorta gets frustrating knowing that if you get hit by a Tatsumaki, you're undoubtedly going to take a hyper to the face as well. Same with Super Skrull's Tenderizer > Skrull Torch and Chun's Legs > Kikosho. Not that I'm against being able to cancel a special into a hyper, but some of these are just WAY too easy to abuse.

Meanwhile, I think I'm going to rewatch the sp00ky stream. Can't get enough of that Scooby Doo hype. :lol

I can't believe at one point I thought he wasn't so special. It was like "oh he's in? cool I guess." :P

I guess it doesn't help that I haven't gotten around to trying anything from the Resident Evil series as yet...

It's ironic for you to complain about easy hit confirmation into hypers, and have Deadpool as your avatar. If an Akuma cancels Tatsu into his hyper, don't complain, be appreciative. An Akuma that actually knew something about his character would launch you out of that Tatsu, air combo you, relaunch you after a Demon Kick OTG, and THEN throw out the Messatsu Gouhadou. That Skrull linking Tenderizer into Skrull Torch could use his air dash to OTG you and relaunch you as well, and Chun-li could link her legs several times before throwing out her lightning leg hyper, and then air comboing you through three full series due to her triple jump.

So don't be mad about those hyper-spamming noobs, be damn glad they don't know how to play, because if you faced a competent opponent you would be hurting a lot more for making the mistake.

Edit: I am also learning how to use Haggar's nearly invincible spinning clothesline assist and OMG, am I ever expecting to trigger rage quits with that thing when putting up a wall with Arthur.
It's not invincible, but Iron Man's Repulsor Blast is pretty nice for the same purpose - you just have to call it in a bit early.

One thing I should correct you on. I actually asked several pages ago if anyone had a Spencer avatar I could get, as I don't use Deadpool at all. THOUGHT I would, pre-release (since I'm a fan of his character), but I don't.

And yeah, I know it could be a LOT worse. Doesn't make it any less annoying to see the same tactics used by so many players. I'm just personally not a fan of using "safe" tactics such as these, as opposed to taking risks and branching out/trying new characters. In fact, I'd probably be less mad if one of the scenarios you described happened as opposed to one I described, as your scenarios take more skill to pull off.

People that are happy about making people rage online by playing keep away spam THE ENTIRE ROUND.. i dont know. They rage because that shits boring, time outs are annoying, and online its pretty annoying with that split second of lag.

Hey, I didn't say you used the character, just that you sport his avatar. Actually, as a keepaway player, Deadpool is totally my style. I just hate the character so much I can't bear to use him. His missions are pretty entertaining though.

The moves you described definitely don't take a lot of skill, but of all the ways Akuma can approach me, I would choose Tatsu spam; it's much less scary than the headgames that come out of Demon Flips. Tatsu is one of Akuma's least safe moves; Spencer should be able to deal with it just fine, but who else do you use? Tenderizer is also horribly unsafe, as the entire move must complete. Block it, advancing guard ASAP, and then punish the move as he sits there beating the air with all his might.

Seconded, eating a special cancelled into a super/hyper isn't really a big deal. If you aren't eating a huge combo beforehand consider yourself lucky...

Team 1 (Main): Captain America/Spencer/Magneto
Team 2: Haggar/Viewtiful Joe/_______ (Varies, haven't settled on a third)
Team 3: Dormammu/Doctor Doom/Taskmaster (Still learning this team)

Word. Plus, bullet hell gives you time to think while you're blocking the spam. Playing against some that uses Logan and akuma like Wong did, doesn't. I took a mean L that match. lol

So many more people at my work prefer MvC3 over SSF4. You hear a lot of "Ohhhs" and "Aghhs" whenever a super goes off. I think I just convinced 5 people to buy the game. Hopefully I can have more games during lunch breaks. It feels good to pull off that ironman combo in front of people.

We haven't unlocked everything at work but I can't wait to show how lame my Sentinel is.

Or because they're scrubs who get angry rather than try and figure out how to get around it?

Your workplace sounds awesome. I wish I had a place to play games during my break :(

What's "that ironman combo"?

Its really basic but seems to last a while.

cr. L, cr M, H, S, jump, M, H, down H, S, land & dash, L dragon punch, qcf L & M.

<-- I can only DP motion when facing right :(

Trish is so good. My basic mixup:

xx launcher, AABB^AABBC2C, land off screen:

call assist, crossunder 2B, 2Axx
call assist, crossunder 2B, i8Cxx2C,
call assist, crossunder 2B, throw
call assist, fake crossunder 2B,
call assist, crossunder 2B, fake tri jump, 2Axx
call assist, crossunder 2B, crossunder 2B,
call assist, crossunder 2B, box dash crossup S,
call assist, throw sword, box dash crossup S,

All are potentially unblockable.

After watching the stream last night I've turned into a pathetic cowered. Now in Phoenix matches I find myself just running away until the time's out as I'm so scared.

I don't really think most people here are actually trying to play cheese keepaway online except when they're stuck with an impossible laggy match and it's the only way to not die instantly.

I'm using keepaway tactics, yes, because I'm playing Arthur; and it's not for the whole match. I want to get better at using the entire team, so do my duty and swap characters around when it'd normally be prudent, etc, even if I end up losing for now until I get better.

Besides, MvC is a projectile, beam, and zone heavy game by its nature. I believe it is the online lag frustration that makes extreme keep away boring and stressful. When playing a match with a good connection, and playing offline, you know things can get mixed up a lot more and so the excitement is still there waiting to see what happens.

Anyone have a good team with Super Skrull on point? I experimented last night with my already established team of Zero, Chris, Deadpool while trying to put SS in one of the 3 spots, but there's just no mesh and flow if you put Skrull on point.

I was going to try SS, Magneto, Sentinel but I didn't get enough time to see how it pans out.

I'm thinking about replacing dormammu with a character that has a good lockdown assist. there's a reason Justin Wong and other players don't use a lot of high/low assists. Unblockables are highly unreliable. Example:

Trish's unblockable setup is pretty good compared to most characters because she can hit grounded characters with all 3 of her jumping attacks on the way up, and cancel them into a dive kick to continue pressure. Here's the main problem. Assuming we use the best low assist, Wesker, which comes out very quick and has a pretty decent range.

  • instant jumping A: seems to hit every character while they're crouching, but has very little hitstun, making the combo into low shot into dive kick very tight, and Wesker will push people out of range for the 8A. Not many Felicia players are going to give you the half second to call in wesker, walk forward slightly and jump.
  • instant jumping B: the best instant overhead in that it's still very quick and combos directly into 8C through to the dive kick, giving you huge damage and flexible leniency if your timing with Wesker is off. The problem is that it's very character specific which crouching characters this will hit. Won't work on much of the cast.
  • instant jumping C: The most reliable out of the 3, 8C has a huge hit box and will hit the majority of crouching characters, and most inportantly, the only jumping attack that combos directly into her dive kick, making it very easy to use. It's slow, but will still hit at the same time as Wesker if you jump at the same time you call the assist. Still, it doesn't hit every crouching character, and if you abuse it, your opponent can hyper you and your assist on reaction for incredible damage.

You could try using C.Viper or Akuma's overhead, but I don't think there's as many opportunities to mix up with a low than with a jumping attack. Lockdown assists make pushblock less effective and give you more leniency in your timing. High/Low assists tend to be more difficult to use and have less utility, Felicia being an exception.

I'm starting to feel really bad about playing this game in ranked. I'm on a 22 win streak at the moments and it keeps matching me with players who have more loses than wins.

Anyone with the PS3 version: does this game support custom soundtracks?
S-Kill said it did on one of the Capcom Unity streams, but now I'm hearing conflicting things.

EFF YOU, MAN! My record is horrid for this reason.

been grinding trying to learn spencer's ground loop (meanwhile practicing doing moves out of dashes with skrull), my fingers hurt now lol

My 3 Teams now:

Team A - Wolverine, Storm, Deadpool ( my absolute go to team, still learning Storm/fitting her in)
Team B - Ryu, Super Skrull, Dormammu
Team C - Dante, Chun-Li, Ammy

I had the match of my life:

So here's my X-23/Trish/Taskmaster team currently getting spammed to hell and back by a Sentinel on point with Iron Man on assist (and a Magneto for DIS REPTOR SPAM). Since lag sucks, I wasn't able to use X-23 to just fly over them, so she basically lost 80% of her health in the first 10 seconds. Brought in Trish, used her super to punish a bit, then got in there.

At the end, finished off with a combo I haven't actually pulled off in training (X-23 air exchange with Trish who air exchanges with X-23 again, dive down into Ankle Slice into Super) and finished off his Magneto. The guy didn't rematch.

PS3 version does not support custom soundtracks, unfortunately.

I've been playing around with Hsien-Ko as an alternate for M.O.D.O.K in my Amaterasu/Viewtiful Joe/M.O.D.O.K team. I really enjoy her golden armored swinging assist, but I kind of struggle when I have her on point. I know that this question is kind of broad, but does anyone have any suggestions for how to use her against rushdown characters? When a good Wolverine, X-23, or Wesker is pulled out, my Hsien-Ko gets crushed.

Set your Rank Limit to Any.

Had a bad string of online losses today, wasn't pretty. I keep owned up by someone spamming Sent drones and jumping behind and attacking me. I should be blocking against their point character to save myself, correct?

I really need better assists. I always call in Ammy but she always loses to lightning kicks, jam session, sent drones, doesn't help. When should I use assists when I'm fighting?

EDIT: opposite here, I keep getting matched up against people with 100+ wins and at least two ranks higher, sigh.

yeah, no matter where the assists are attacking you....block in relation to their point character.

what were wong and floe's teams? sorry if its mentioned here, i just can't find it

Justin used She Hulk, Amateratsu, Tron Bone

Flo used Dante Tron Bonne and Amateratsu ( I think).

Tron Bones assist seems to be pretty popular.
