There will always be that mentality though. They have to think if a character would be fun to play, or look different to what they have already picked out. It'll be no fun if in a roster of 32 there are 10-12 characters that are pretty similar.
But this is an infinite game~
They can afford similar characters!

Capcom I'm thinking Asura and Lady there is loose evidence that points to both being included in the cast.
As for the marvel side I'm thinking Green goblin, dok ock for the spider man rep and either Hela or Loki as the Thor rep.

Asura was always a higher fan want than Jedah and Monster Hunter who got in so there is that.
Outside that he'd fit into the brawler role. Most people pulling for Asura has played the game where a lot of his stuff is really shown off. Hell he even had a fun DLC spoofing SF4. Which is part of why I think people root for him.

Asura not making the base roster is pretty lame. I'm over it, but it's still lame.
As much as I want Scarlet Witch ASAP, I've since come to terms with her being stuck with the Fox characters (I.E. I'm gonna have to wait until next year to have any chance at one of my favorite female Avengers, probably the favorite). But a glimmer of hope for one of my long-time requests, Green Goblin, is more than a good enough consolation prize.
Oh didn't realize she was in Fox limbo. Then I bet its Black Widow with a bunch of Jill's moves.

I feel like Rival School characters could be done like Rocket/Groot too with some team-up moves, at least for some supers

Asura is one of most marvel character you could see from Capcom side.

The base roster in general has some glaring holes/omissions. Especially in the Capcpom side, where they don't have the excuse of Marvel telling what to do.

Asura is basically every anime you can think of. He has a Naruto style Tailed beast mode, Jojo style oraoraoraora, Mecha anime lasers, and some dragon Ball z rage transformations. He even one punched a guy as big as Jupiter if not larger. He'd be great.

Don't get me wrong, I also support Gene as well. Also I haven't play either games yet but I did my researches with some characters from the games that I've played. I watched some video about their moves and games so I'm intrigued with their potential movesets and I think they are going to be awesome in this MVCI if both get in.
I mean, I don't get people stanning for game characters they haven't even played or experienced first hand.
Though in Asura's case I guess it's valid since the actual game is basically a video game version of an anime anyway. Easy to Youtube it all and get the general gist of things.

stanning? If anything, I would chose Breath of Fire, and rest assure, I actually played first five games, since 6th game didn't make out of Japan.
I don't really get it when you think we shouldn't support the characters that came from the games we haven't played. It's weird for righteous fans to establish those kind of rules on the fans especially they might want more fans to support their clause. If anything I'm eyeing for characters who would bring stuffs to the table for Versus franchise, like uniqueness, functions (
), diversity, variety, etc. Basically I don't see anything wrong with supporting certain characters from the games that we haven't played, at long their design looks great, especially with their potential moves. At least, I'm keeping my mind open to anyone, rather than focusing on certain franchises.

I don't see anyone stanning for Remember Me girl aka Nilin when she is chock full of functions (literally) and brings legitimate diversity to the roster. She is like a female Gene only with more emphasis on tech and hacking than martial arts swagger.
I feel like it's just people collectively in a community going down the list of franchises and characters. Right now its Gene and Asura who haven't been put into a VS game yet but then soon we will end up on Remember Me when the franchises start getting used up.

I have seen some people doing that for Nilin so I don't see any problem if people want to support Nilin in the game. I think it's weird that you are trying to project that people can't just voice their supports for characters they haven't played. Let them be if they want to.
Being playable character in the game is a good way to a build up the fanbase and raise the awareness of the brand(s). For example, once Bayonetta got confirmed for Smash Bros, many people scattered their asses around and trying to find the game. At same time, it was a bad timing for company and customers because they discontinued Bayonetta 1 and 2 bundle so the value went skyrocketed, like 90 to 150 dollars for a brand new copy. They finally published more games (Bayonetta 2 only) to release during same month as Bayonetta DLC, if I recalled correctly.
Capcom would never hear the end of that either if they tried to pull that stunt. Mind you that for SFV, they did say they had no intention of making "extra versions" but I suppose MvC:I is fair game.
As for Asura vs Gene... I'm sorry, but I'm siding with Asura. Mind you that if we get Gene instead, I won't be complaining, but if we are talking about Iconic Capcom characters that can make a huge impact, Asura can make that happen. Hell, make his level 3 look like one of his cinematic punches and you will have people losing their minds

well obviously it's up to them to differentiate! look at ryu and ken in sfv... they clearly made it a point to have ken play less identical to ryu.
The response to a character shouldn't be "Ah, we can't put him/her in, he/she'd be too similar to other characters." It should be "Ah, how can we put him/her in and make him/her feel unique and fun to play?"

I made a decent list of female character's awhile back. Not saying they're all A+ Memorable tier but they could definitely be fun characters. (Excluding the obvious RE, SF, and other fighting game franchises since other people have those covered.0
