"In a VICE News special report, Senior Correspondent Isobel Yeung travels to the epicenter of Italy's COVID-19 outbreak. Since February 20, when it was first detected in the country's Lombardy region, Italy has been devastated by the virus. While official data says that more then 19,000 people have perished so far, there are signs that the actual death toll could be much higher. Spending a shift with EMTs, Yeung witnessed firsthand a healthcare system in crisis. And she and her team gained rare access to an ICU in a hospital overwhelmed by COVID-19 cases." (4/14/20)

"Per case, I don't think it's as deadly as people thought," Bhattacharya told host Tucker Carlson. " ... The World Health Organization put an estimate out that was, I think, initially 3.4 percent. It's very unlikely it is anywhere near that. It's it's much likely, much closer to the death rate that you see from the flu per case."

"It really seems like there's many, many cases of the virus that we haven't identified with the testing regimens that we've got around the world," he said. "Many orders of magnitude more people have been infected with it, I think. I think that we realize that ... means that ... the death rate is actually lower than people realize, also by orders of magnitude."

The only thing I disagree with hanging the WHO out to dry is the timing. Use them for whatever they are worth for now then put the screws to them when COVID 19 is in our collective rear view mirrors.
I feel the opposite way: letting it slide now allows them to cobble together half-assed apologies and "significant measures" and empty promises about how they'll do better next time (with a side of "please give us more funding", just watch). Some countries will fall for the bait and will be less severe with them. Might even give them a pass.

A decisive leader must sometimes leverage anger to remove a broken artifice. Undue graciousness and "let's circle back to this next week" always always always works in favor of entrenched bureaucracies.

It was all pablum from Pelosi's nephew. Said he wants to be able to track everyone and until he has that setup he won't talk about opening dates.
Saw the stuff on the news this morning. He's such a poor mans Christian Bale. And yep... we're screwed. I'm in the OC. The numbers for coronal are sooooooooo low here. May 1rst better be the start to something. No matter how small. Let's get this ball rolling.

The common cold is from the Coronavirus family, along with SARS and MERS. The problem with this family is that there is yet to be a vaccine found.

"Just the flu" is actually a negative because chances of getting rid of it are in the near impossible range.

I'm starting to think herd immunity is the only path forward, that said it would kill off a large portion of the world and it may even be for nothing if it doesn't weaken it.

Interesting times ahead I guess...
The majority of common colds are caused by rhinoviruses, not coronaviruses (though they do cause a chunk of them).

Anyway, if we couldn't make a vaccine, then herd immunity wouldn't work either, because they both rely on the same thing.

Auntie Nancy told him to crater CA's economy to hurt the orange man so little Gavin is doing just that.

The US may have to endure social distancing measures — such as stay-at-home orders and school closures — until 2022, researchers projected on Tuesday. That is, unless, a vaccine becomes quickly available.

It's like people want to see violent civil unrest in the streets to destabilize governments.

I don't even believe there will ever be a vaccine

18-24 months for a vaccine is the new 2 weeks of lockdown.

Every country said 2 weeks lockdown don't worry, then extended, and extended, and now some people are saying lockdowns forever.

Vaccine will be like that. now its 18-24 months, then it will be 24-48 months, then 5 years, then 10 years and on and on.

But I hope I am wrong and that scientist who said 80% sure they would have one by September is correct.

Until 2022? I'd rather die from this disease than going through this. Fucking imbeciles.

There's a new story everyday about some lab or company being "close" to a vaccine. Its all just for publicity. How about we create a vaccine before claiming that we'll have 600-800 million ready in a year.

What happened to China?

I thought they had some of the biggest virology labs in the world? They produce large amount of the worlds medicine and pride themselves as being at the top of the scientific world.

How come they aren't going to start making millions of vaccines? They had a 2 month head start on the world shouldn't that head start have given their scientist lots of time to find theraputics or vaccines?

Is the timing that bad? What are they actually doing to combat this pandemic other than publishing potentially faulty recommendations and guidance?

The thing is, though, is that it requires voluntary compliance, and I don't care how liberal and woke much of California is, come mid-May or June, people are not going to keep staying cooped up indoors and wasting their summer when the numbers will have been low and dropping for months and other states are opening up and doing OK (assuming that's the case).

Uh, the only vaccine in phase II (interventional trial for dosing and side effects (500)) at the moment is Chinese: Ad5-nCoV (CanSino Biologics).

There are 2 more Chinese vaccines in Phase I testing.

Well that answers my question. We just don't seem to get any information about them, yet we can get article after article about Gilead or HQ or J&J.

Is it being lost in translation, is China ahead of the rest of the world in finding cures?

Italy is below 3k new cases for the second day in a row (same rate as three days after the lockdown), but those deaths just don't stop coming

Good thing Newsom has emptied the prisons so he has plenty of room for those who won't comply with his new authoritarian Nation State.

All of the real experts say death numbers have about a two week lag after infection numbers.

Positive signs from the UK - 761 deaths today with previous days (https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/uk/) 778, 717, 737, 917, 980 (going backward). The pattern of decline looks solid and can't be explained by weekend admin quietness which typically pushes numbers up the next working day. Not counting chickens but fingers crossed.

I'm hoping you are right, but while we still are only counting deaths that occur in hospitals, it doesn't seem worth even comparing. The numbers of deaths in care homes is sky rocketing. It seems taking patients into hospital, not testing them, despite their symptoms, then sending them back into their care homes, was a bit of a mistake. Who would have thunk it?

After my mother tested positive, I asked my workplace if they want me to come in. In the first phone call, they told me to self quarantine for 14 days. They're going to call me back but I'm 99% sure I wont be working for two weeks. :messenger_confused:

Oh well, at least now I'm technically eligible for the $2000 gibs.

Those deaths are at least 7 to -13 days behind the new cases curves, so that's the explanation.

To be fair, he is footing the second largest bill already, which means he also has a vested interest when commenting.

I think a serious post mortem is required to how they got this so wrong, and whether it was malicious. This is literally the kind of thing WHO exists for. I fear however that just like with FIFA corruption, little will be discovered and nothing will change.

BBC has compiled a timeline of the initial WHO response:
To be more fair, he can pick up the slack in the U.S. absence if it really is that important. His contribution prior to the U.S. halting their funds, doesn't mean he can't float more.

I'm not sure why the U.S. taxpayers need to give one dime to the WHO based on their stance on Taiwan and what looks to be misdirection on the Coronavirus based on talking points and policies from the CCP.

Here you go and i am not your dude now go pound sand

It's life, but not as we know it: Welcome to the 'new normal' of Denmark's post-lockdown world https://www.rt.com/op-ed/485885-denmark-covid-schools-children/

That's very misleading buddy. It seems they closed down very early just like here in CZ and are going with a gradual reopening of things, including schools and only for very young kids. Children are amongst the group with least risk, so it makes sense.

I still insist, do you know at which center I should go get my chip implanted dude? Might be convenient if it has Bluetooth. IsOr can I install a SIM card? :D

So you believe China?

I said I can't believe it!

As time goes on, it just makes the Chinese numbers look more and more ridiculous. I don't think we'll see such a flat stoppage of cases/deaths anywhere else (maybe Iran when they decide they don't want to report anymore).

Singapore, which was one of the early success stories, reported 447 new cases today.

I wonder if we'll ever get any real info out of Chiner. There was a flood of reporting in the middle of the crisis, but it seems like they've managed to bottle all that up since then.

I still can't believe the radiation levels at Chernobyl are only 3.6 Roentgen!

Clearly, downplaying the disease wasn't working and it was time for the Party to get serious. But how serious? Would it provide full cooperation to the international community? Would being seen as the source of this virus hurt its international image? Beyond these, there was a darker dimension: the more Beijing cooperated, the less the disease stood to affect other countries. This includes countries China sees as a threat to its existence, like the United States. Why should China suffer the effects of a pandemic while others stayed safe — and increased their strength relative to China — based on China's own costly experience?

That idea hasn't received the attention it deserves and it's not at all improbable because as the next two paragraphs point out:

Such a question is of course inimical to human decency. And yet we must consider that Xi Jinping has produced the greatest program of ethnic cleansing in the world today. He has curtailed freedoms in China severely and is the father of the panopticon state. His incessant military buildup threatens neighbors while using economic and other subversive means to erode the sovereignty of countries around the world. We should not assume it was beyond his imagining to withhold a degree of support from the international community to ensure that China would not suffer alone.

Strong evidence supports this idea. Hearing the World Health Organization (WHO) repeat and praise the Party line while giving short shrift to health advice until quite recently has alarmed many. Seeing Beijing sell defective wares and claim it as humanitarian aid has angered many more. Spreading disinformation during the crisis and hinting at using life-saving goods for leverage (original here) — while denying even the faintest hint of wrongdoing — I suspect have ruined China's reputation for some time to come. In short, China's good offices have been reserved almost entirely for burnishing its image at the world's expense, while calling it "the greatest kindness and good deeds."

...it wouldn't be out of character.
