Massive Advance Wars custom map database back online!

GDJustin

stuck my tongue deep inside Atlus' cookies
Alright, first a little backstory. I ran an Advance Wars fansite for... jees almost two years. We had (most likely still have, although I can't confirm it) the most advanced strategies and guides for the game literally in existence. GFAQS, official guides, anywhere. We had a damage calculator where you could put any two units from any two COs on any terrain and tell you what the dmg percents would work out to. Thats how hardcore AW fans are.

Eventually a programmer created a program to let you make AW maps on your PC... it saved them as their own file format and everything. One thing led to another, and eventually a couple people actually created programs to play AW online, on your PC. It wasn't perfect (no loading/dropping of units, for example), but it was still cool. Finally someone created a prog that would let you load these fan-made map files into the game, for vs. matches.

~~~
But I digress. Enough with the backstory. My site's PHP programmer created a Design Maps database, where people could register accounts, submit the maps they'd made, rate and comment on other people's maps, etc. You could then view maps in one of several categories, such as 2P, 3P, predeployed, or just view the top rated maps, etc. Things grew very quickly and eventually there was over 1000 custom maps in the database. Some sucked... some were better than what Nintendo themselves included.
Anyway, to condense a lot more info, The dbase of 1700+ maps and the PHP system itself was lost for over a year... until last week. Its back up and running, and at the moment has 208 maps, with 10 or so being added a day:
http://www.underthemountain.org/awn/designmaps/index.php
I have absolutely no connection to the site anymore, other than being its founder. I IMed the current admin and STRONGLY encouraged him to sift through the old 1700 maps, take the best 500 or so, and put them back up at a rate of 20 or so per day. It looks like he's taking my advice.
CLIFFNOTES:
Visit this link to check out a dbase of hundreds of fan-made AW maps, updated daily, split up into a multitude ot categories.
DISCLAIMER:
Yes, I used to run this site, but that has nothing to do with this topic. I haven't had any connection to it in over 18 months. I'm making this topic out of excitement as an extremely hardcore AW fan... it just feels really really good to look at all these maps and start formulating strategies in my head.
Sample maps (complete with rules, should you want to recreate them on your cart
(Rainforest, small rivers... and the big Amazon river represented by sea squares. For a better effect play with Rain weather.)
2-players self-producion map in which you really start with nothing. But you can't be slow to get to the land below Amazon river or who know what will happen to your HQ...
Rain, $2000, Fog of War.
Author's comments:
In this War Room map, the OS player must play successful having both good air and naval skills. You can try a land invasion, but the limited space for the land units to travel will make it difficult.
The two enemies have equal forces, and you must balance your army to win. Or, you can try a fast and heavy strike to one side, and use its funds to attack the other foe. Fog of War, while making the playability twice better, will make the map much harder - and really difficult to beat in the required S-rank time.
Notice how there are various environments in this map. :) Mountains, river, big channel (sea tiles), a forest, a metropolis area (area around OS HQ)... :D
Quick note: Drake = male duck, not the CO. :P
Although this one wasn't made using the random maps generator, I still think that it looks somewhat like a true AW War Room map. : )
Sir, you fucking rock.
New website is pretty cool too, I love this rebirth. Maybe add a forum for users to comment on maps and strategies?
There is one :) The site has traditional forums to discuss maps and design tips, etc., then the dbase itself I linked to has its own system for comments on specific maps.
Looks sweet. It's too bad there isn't a way to download these files to your GBA. Maybe someone will hack the DS, find out Advance Wars DS's map format, and make it possible to transfer maps over Wi-fi.
While it sucks that to play these maps RIGHT requires you to painstakingly recreate them on your cart, its not as bad as it seems. Speaking from experience, all but the most complicated maps that have predeployed units everywhere can be recreated in about 10 minutes of concentration.
Some more maps:
A 3-players map with sea and air battle, and some land conflicts in the islands.
Although usually they do, I don't think that the airports will spoil the naval battle in this map. There is more than enough sea space for the ships to move, and Landers are very important to transport land units to other islands.
As you can notice, each player has two initial islands, being one with the HQ. All the spaces (base-port, port-island, shoal-airport, etc.) are calculated so no army gets an advantage (assuming that the COs are Andy).
There are 10 islands in total. 3 HQ islands, 3 initial islands, 3 bewtween-armies islands and the central island. It's obvious what each player has to do.
Just a note. I called this Sun Archipelago because, if you go to far from the computer and look at the map, it will seem like a sun and its rays.
Fog of War may or not be on (if you make it accurate to the map name, it should be off). The other settings may be chosen as you like. Probably makes a nice base capture map (25 buildings as a limit is suggested).
Play with whatever settings you want, ive found base capture is rather fun.
Note: Some people probably wont like the airport on the middle penisula. If you choose, you can just turn it into a neutral city
A symmetrical FOW planned map. You have a 50-50 percent chance of finding the enemy and of not.
Same here. Guess what game is going into the DS when I get home from work? Mmm...back-lit Advance Wars 2...
I've never done map building in AW2 or even looked at it much....can you create any map from AW1 using it?
Yeah, AW2s map editor adds all the AW2 mechanics (rocket platforms, basically), but it doesn't take any of AW1's out. Most of the maps in the dbase use only AW1 COs and AW1's art style, b/c I think the hardcore AW community prefers AW1 over 2. I know I do, anyway.
Funny you should say that - I've recently purchased AW2, and have just finished the Campaign (easy). While the added rocket pads and COs are pretty awesome, I can't but help feel teh Campaign mode is a step back. You're ONLY fighting Black Hole ( which most of the CO's power comes from increased powers of units). I haven't explored the mode much, but there doesn't seem to be the apparent different pathways (you can choose the next map you play, but the order doesn't seem to matter). On top of that, the AI seems worse in some respects - I attacked the win condition straight off, and the comp seemed still keen to take out a diversion I created.
On top of all that, the in game map graphics (which I look at more, since I turn all animations off) are worse - trees look more cartoony.
Are the CO's more balanced and improved in AW2? Do units still get a small ~10% increase in attack and defense when you power up? Or Only what they say in the dossier? (ie. Max says increased attack, but does he get defense aswell? and do Co's l;ike andy still get a small increase in power when he uses his power?).
I'm finding myself thinking AW1 is more the definitive version - especially since I like the training mode, which was annoyingly tacked onto the campaign mode in AW2.
Although logic dictates that AW2 is, really, the overall better package, most hardcore fans still prefer the first, for a couple of the reasons you mentioned. Campaign mode isn't as fun, the new COs, while interesting and thankfully balanced fairly well, are sometimes too complicated for their own good (lash).
I think the main reason AW1 remains more loved is just because of the incremental improvements AW2 made. I mean shit, AW2's War Room is the original 20 maps with 10 more just tacked on, and new COs featured in the earlier ones. As I said, the continued love for AW1 remains sorta illogical, since the sequel doesn't actually REMOVE anything that made AW1 great... but the lack of any real new units (neotanks don't count), and the lack of any other really new mechanics just didn't compell the AW community to throw their weight behind the sequel..
That, and the AW Online progs are focused around an AW1 experience.
As for specifics regarding CO bonuses and the like, I honestly couldn't tell you anymore. This should tell you everything you need:
http://www.underthemountain.org/awn/aw2co.shtml
If it doesn't, the amount of AW2 knowledge floating around that forum is insane, so you could always just ask.
Is there still work being done on the fan made Windows version of Advance Wars, or was it shut down?
There's a couple different windows AW Online progs hosted, at that site. Both allow for online play. I haven't been following things closely enough to know which is farther along or better. I do know that only one can load the map files created with the mapmaker, but I can't remember which of the two it was ;)
Neither was shut down by Nintendo, amazingly. I both other authors lost interest before completing the projects, unfortunately. Neither games have COs or CO powers, I believe :(
The best way to enjoy these maps is to actually take the time to recreate them on the GBA. As I said, while far from an ideal solution, it doesn't take as long as you'd think.
Greatest. Thread. Ever.
Advance Wars is probably my favorite Gameboy game of all time (and that's saying a lot).
Thanks for the original post!
oh my lord downloadable content for advance wars on DS would be a terrific idea that somebody should make happen. DS OPTION PACK memory cart.
I used to post at AWN, and even submitted a couple of maps but they don't seem to be in that database. I didn't register or submit my maps through that database, I just sent them in an e-mail or posted them on the forum, I can't remember. I was hoping that site would come back some day and I'd be able to find my maps again 'cause I no longer have them saved. :( Hopefully the webmaster has all the really, really old ones saved somewhere as I'd like to play one or two of them again. One of them was called Rear Assault and the other, I think, was called Oi! Oi! Oi! (yeah, it was a map of Australia). There were a bunch of others I made but were totally unforgettable.
Some of these maps are fantastic. At least the two or three of them I was able to edit into my cartridge. What a pain.
And Lash art! Whoo!
playing it online and swapping maps and playing on them
Strangely, I had you in mind when I did it. Really!
(you know how someone's avatar sorta becomes that poster in your mind, for lack of any other visual association? Well, I always thought of you as Lash! ... in a good way. Platonic... sorta...)
:)
re: really really old maps- when I left the site, they existed on the FTP, but so many changes meant it would have been a massive task to get them live again. I'll ask if they still exist.
Actually, it should be possible for Advance Wars DS to import any custom maps from the GBA titles.
In theory.
