Materialism is ruining my friend's life.....

He's seriously suffering from deep regret over the purchased he's made over the past years and $1000's wasted away all in the name of materialism.

I tried to tell him that it's good he's evolved into a more spiritual and minimalist person but he can't seem to forgive himself for his mistakes. It's not so bad really, but I can't blame him for initially feeling like he hurt himself.

GAF, what should I tell my friend to make him realize it's okay to.forgive yourself and move on?

Did he hurt himself because of materialism?
Is he going to be homeless because of the money he wasted?
If no: tell him to cut the losses, sell the junk he doesn't need and keep whatever is left as a reminder of his mistake.

That sucks. You know if he spent any of that monies on retro game consoles or games?
I am willing to take on those items from him. IF he as extra punisment for his materialistic spending also agrees to cover the shipping.
A lesson is never learnt unless it hurts. So go get him, ship his game consoles and all games to me and his sins will be forgiven.

Only way to wipe the slate clean. And reboot your life without materialism. I am here to help you and take over the burden or materialism. Hurry. Send me the stuff now. Quick!

OP, why don't you just buy some of the stuff that he purchased from him? That way you can help lessen his guilt and get some cool stuff (likely at a discount?) It's win win for you and your nameless friend.

Hey, back off, I got first dibs.
All retro game consoles and games go to ME. You can have the rest but the game consoles are mine.

Your friend needs to learn that positive experiences, happy memories, and constructive/ mutually supportive relationships last much longer than anything you can buy from a store.

Are they depressed maybe they trying to But themselves to happiness. If so they only buy a temporary high. Don’t do it. I’ve done it. You end up wasting loads

I recommend some psychedelics.
What is it that they are hoarding though?

I myself have a problem with collecting shit, but I try to only collect things I will be able to resell for more now and trying to only get stuff I really really really want to keep forever.

Not everyone likes to collect stuff. Most people on here plays games at their best

Me though? I have figures that costs thousands in total. Regret? Not. At. Fucking. All

Strong mentality baby. You either face the consequences of something you did yourself, or go learn how to overcome/stop doing it. Easy.

Oh no I'm not shaming it, I'm saying this is a hobby website so technically we are materialistic to a certain degree.

I prefer to buy things. Some material things last more than a lifetime. Minimalism doesn't bring more joy, it's just a mindset to be in.

Is this perhaps your friend? 🤔

(Sorry...tired joke)

Seriously though...while it's good to be honest with ourselves about our mistakes, focusing on them too much can lead down the dangerous road to self-loathing. We should grow stronger and wiser through our mistakes and use our experiences to better prepare for the future.

I wish your friend all the best. With a helpful and caring friend like you in his life, I'm sure he'll recover from this before too long. :)

It's never too late to get better.
But I would not correlate high spending and waste as fast. Minimalism is not for everyone and it's not the only way of living.
I prefer minimalism and having everything nice and tidy.
Tell... You friend that he needs just one ps4 to play Death Stranding and that pc gaming is a huge waste before I .... before he gets over 500 steam games and spends 2k on stupid ass pc parts every few years.... It's not too late to realize that it's ok to have 90% of that experience on 200usd ps4 but don't have to worry about a god damn pc troubleshooting.

Let your friend know he is doing better than majority of people just by realizing this. MANY people will never realize this throughout their lives, and will defend themselves until the end. Anything worth changing won't be easy, but atleast it is worth the pain compared to temporary happiness. Maybe recommend him a dopamine detox, this way he will start to enjoy the smaller things in life.

Your “friend” can sell the crap he bought and donate whatever he gets to whatever needy organization or religious organization he likes best ?
It will not only help those in need but clear some up some of his mental weakness sorry I meant regret.

Doesn't sound like he has actually changed his outlook if he is still worrying about stuff and money from his past.

I dont even want to calculate the ammounts i spent over the years on things i dont need.

Tell your firend there is no need to worry about a few thousand, its marginal compared to a lifetime‘s earnings.
Self-forgiveness is only second to forgiving others.

materialism can be good or bad

if someone enjoys fish keeping or something along the lines of a similar passionate hobby it can be spiritually fulfilling and it can define you in a very positive way

but if youre after bling and cars and empty yet expensive materialism then you got bigger problems
