Materialism is ruining my friend's life.....

He's seriously suffering from deep regret over the purchased he's made over the past years and $1000's wasted away all in the name of materialism.

I tried to tell him that it's good he's evolved into a more spiritual and minimalist person but he can't seem to forgive himself for his mistakes. It's not so bad really, but I can't blame him for initially feeling like he hurt himself.

GAF, what should I tell my friend to make him realize it's okay to.forgive yourself and move on?
Prior to getting married, I used to waste time 10s of thousands of dollars on material deal I didn't need. I purchased over 3,500 in rare DVDs, Blu-rays, VHS, LD of vintage horror movies/TV shows. Wasted more on musical instruments I would play only once. Spent over 4,000 collecting retro games, consoles, and accessories before selling 85% of it in 2015. Bought a $25,000 Toyota Scion before movie to Mexico in 2016. I left all of it but select smaller items behind. Mind you, I didn't need those things. When I was alone...I was extremely socially distanced and materialistic.

I keep it simple now and spend big only for my wife's birthday, our anniversary, or christmas. Your friend can forgive himself. At least he caught -on to the habit. Seems like just about everyone hoards a collection of something.
still collecting hard copy anime...just not as often 😏

One of the best things I've ever done is getting away from my stuff. Just going off and putting some roots down elsewhere temporarily for a few months or so. Being away for a long period of time will help you realize what's important to you and make it easier to give up the things you don't need.

Great responses so far!

My friend genuinely thanks you all for giving some.much needed perspective.

What he took home so far is learning and internalizing this lesson and hopefully he will grow to become more content with what he already has!

Materialism has always been conditioned in us these past two centuries so I let him.know it's okay to.slip up this time, but glad that hr caught up to it now rather than later.
