Matrix Online Downsizes

Suikoguy

I whinny my fervor lowly, for his length is not as great as those of the Hylian war stallions
I got this in my email, and I found this amusing

On August 2, 2005, we will be merging the nine current worlds into three new worlds. This merge should help to increase the number of players on any world at any given time. One world will be Hostile while the other two will run under normal PvP rules. Here is the breakdown of which worlds are being joined together:

Enumerator, Heuristic, Input --> Hostile World
Method, Regression, Iterator --> Normal World
Proxy, Linenoise, Output --> Normal World

I kinda feel bad, but not really cause the game was pretty nasty, and the market is so crowded already. Dumb puchase SOE, unless it was really cheap.

SOE already said they'll roll it into StationAccess, which will give the game a lot of cross-over players.

Warner won't release that information, which means it bombed so bad that they have to merge servers before it's even been out six months.

It took over a year for them to merge PlanetSide servers and six years for them to merge EQ1 servers.

Mythic didn't merge servers, instead they clustered them so that three servers are grouped together and players from each server can interact with each other while still maintaining the unique communities and economies on each server. It actually is a really cool idea.

The deal included a license to do a DC Comics game, so my guess is Warner basically gave them that license to take Matrix Online off their hands, without having to let down the few people dumb enough to enjoy Matrix Online...

Yup, and with the DC game coming to PC, PS3, and PSP the Marvel game is pretty much DOA. If Marvel is smart (and they aren't) they'd go to NCSoft and just give them the license for a new version of City of Heroes using Marvel characters. But that would require Marvel to be smart.

Who cares.. it went from 49.99 to 29.99 in 2 weeks after release at gamestop.. then just dropped to 19.99 just this past week..

Thats some elite sales.. While WoW sits pretty at 49.99 and still selling like hot cakes :lol

Monthly recurring subscriptions >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> box sales.

That's why every MMO company with experience tends to drop the price quickly. Hell, at E3 they give away the games as swag as all they care about is subscriptions. It doesn't matter how you get the client to the user, a $20 retail box or a free trial download, as long as they subscribe and continue to subscribe is all that matters.

Mythic is a good example at seeding clients. The DAoC CD Keys are not consumed when you create your account (unlike EVERY other MMORPG). Instead you can loan your DAoC CDs to a friend and he can create an account without actually having to buy the boxed copy of the game.

I heard the game sold somewhere in the neighborhood of 45,000 copies total around the time Sony purchased it, so the number of actual active subscribers from that sales amount is probably pretty small given how shitty the game is.

Right along with Tanarus and Infantry. The place for games that were good free, but intolerable paid.

Microsoft is going to do WHATEVER they can to make the game good, and I have some faith is Sigil, since I know some guys down there. Also not sure why you would say the Marvel game is DOA when SOE Austin really isn't top notch.

Uh, has it been announced that Sigil is the developer behind it :)

Sigil hasn't even announced on their site that they are working on it yet. So shhhhh.

Not Sigil, Ensemble. Hence all the job postings for MMORPG focused developers and designers the week before the announcement.

It isn't Ensemble. Marvel has been one of the worst kept secrets around.

It's definitely not Sigil, they are hipdeep in Vanguard, and will continue to be for the forseeable future.
