Maximo

I was playing Maximo 1 for the first time, just a few minutes on the PS2 and the only thing I can think of is: How come there is no Maximo 3 in the works?

This game is beautiful. Not the graphics, but the art. I laughed out loud just at the intro. And the first level was like being in a funky pixar adventure movie. :lol And Death rocks too. :D

What bothers me though is the battle system. I'm getting hit mostly when I have no control like at the end of attack animations and it's pretty easy to get swarmed because L1 (to focus camera behind you) isn't very responsive. Also, most enemies so far don't require much. Just walk up to them and slash. This is ok I guess, but with multiple enemies and slow attack animations the fighting gets annoying. =\

Does this change later in the game or in Maximo 2?

Anyway what is the consensus on Maximo? Any fans here?

Capcom closed Capcom Digital Studios following Maximo 2. There was a message from David Siller that he is trying to buy the IP off of Capcom so he can find another publishers for Maximo 3, but I haven't heard anything since.

Maximo 1 and 2 are two of the most excellent platformers since the 16-bit days.

Maximo 1 rocks for platforming
Maximo 2 rocks for action + lite platforming

Maximo 3 was going to be made and would most likely have been awesome again but last time I heard the entire studio that did the games got fired. Fuck fuck fuck >_<

Though IIRC some of the team ended up working on Psychonauts.

Maximo is still my favorite platformer this gen. You will learn tons of new moves which will mike fighting a little funner, but enemies get tougher as well. I remember having a little trouble with the combat the very first time I played, not sure if I trained myself to work around getting hit during animations, or if the new attacks you get later just made it easier to avoid.

There are tons of different basic enemies in the game. I love the graphics, animation, and level desgin, and the search/collect aspect of the game is nice. Some great platforming moments as well, once you get the hang of the controls.

I still have to play Maximo 2, heard it was easier though :(

Maximo 1 and 2 are my favorite platformers this gen (or perhaps tied with Mario Sunshine). Maximo 1 focuses on difficult platforming (although you can gain many varying skills throughout the game). On the other hand Maximo 2 (Army of Zin) focuses much more on combat. To answer your question the combat in Army of Zin is greatly expanded compared to the first game.

ugh, terrible news, they were a talented studio. They really understood how to bring old school gameplay into new 3D games. I wonder why these games didn't do so hot in retail? everyone I've shown maximo to has loved it.

Maximo and its sequel are among the best action games of this generation.

Sad to hear that Capcom Digital Studios was shut down.

I'm only here to echo the sentiment that both Maximo games are indeed awesome.

If you don't own them, get them.

Hmm.... Which studio was this that you were told was working on it?

Yes, both Maximos were ace, 2 more so even then the first. Hopefully the IP will come out again - and if it does I suppose it should stop with Capcom because of the G'n'G heritage.

Argh. The save system is horrible. I don't think I can focus only on this one game to finish or I'll go crazy from repeating the same levels. I should play it along side an RPG or something.

Well there wasn't any indication that development had started. But after Maximo 2 Capcom did a poll about what people wanted to see changed/improved in Maximo 3 which implies that they were thinking about continuing the series.

the combat is mostly about timing so that you don't swing your weapon too early or too late. The primary focus of the game is on platforming, which gets very sophisticated in later levels.

i agree with some others here. It's the best platformer this gen... The game is extremly difficult for a modern platformer. the levels are very linear with the timing of enemy movements and things like that being exactly the same every time you run through them. eventually get to the point where you can really memorize the exact timing and fly through a level very fast, much like the old school 2d platformers.

Worse still when you consider they were also planning a Bionic Commando revival. :(

Sonufa... ;_; I had no idea about that. Bionic Commando was always so cool, and I wondered why nothing was done with the series since the GBC game...

I didn't know they were closed up, they were one of the best things Capcom had going for them. The Maximo games are among my favorite games not just on PS2 but of all time.

Both games have an honest solidity to the feel of the gameplay and sound, complemented by vibrant worlds and characters. And they managed to mix things up just enough for Maximo 2 that it gained its own identity (more action-oriented) but still felt like a natural extension of the first Maximo while not mooting it.

Damn it.
