Yeah, I'm sort of getting eager to see May's NPD numbers. Now that I know that the DS is winning in Japan. I want to see how it is faring against the PSP in NA.

I wouldn't be surprised if people pick up a DS to play Pokemon on, or any of the other good GBA games that came out last month.

I haven't been able to get any verification, but I do hope that you're right.

I'll bite:

PSP = 175,000
PS2 = 280,000
Xbox = 175,000
GCN = 65,000
GBA = 210k
NDS = 150k

Star Wars: ROS 550k combined (PS2 320k, Xbox 230k)
Pokemon: Emerald 375k
Forza: 250k
Doom 3: 200k combined (LE & Regular edition)
Lego Star Wars: 200k combined (PS2 110k, Xbox 90k)

Why so low for GBA, especially with Emerald on shelves now? Out of curiosity, when was the last time GBA hit 150k?

You're right. They should be better than that. However, I still haven't found out what the split was between GBA/DS last month (combined 250k) which is extremely low. So, with Emerald and better DS games out this month, I thought I'd bump it up.

I've changed it to 210k ;)

PS2 212,000
Xbox 178,700
Gamecube 71,000
PSP 197,000
GBA 111,000
DS 156,500

Star Wars Ep. 3 (Xbox, PS2) 521,000
Doom 3 193,000
Pokemon Emerald 500,000
Forza 350,000

No numbers yet? No preview? :( Bunkum? Sonycowboy? Maybe Anihawk can give us some fake numbers again :lol I'm sufering from withdrawal symptoms....

Sorry about that. Got the dates completely mixed up.

edit: the lie thing was a joke.

Goodbye. You didn't get anything "mixed" up. There's no printed schedule out there and the reports are never released at 7:00pm eastern as NPD is an east coast company and always releases after market close (4:30PM EST).

I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, but copping to your lie and then calling it a joke to save yourself from a ban? At least you didn't post false numbers :|

May Videogame Sales Doomed To Be Flat

Still no confirmation of NPD, but presumed to be today after market close

Banc of America Securities expects May videogame sales to be flat year-over-year. The research firm said the industry faces an easy comparison of down 17% in the year-ago period. "We believe LucasArts' Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Nintendo's Pokemon Emerald were the top-selling titles at U.S. retail in May," Banc of America said. The research firm reiterated a "buy" rating and $70 target price on Electronic Arts (nasdaq: ERTS - news - people ), saying the company's console and handheld sales decreased about 35% in May. Electronic Arts' sales for the month will be driven by catalog sales of Fight Night Round 2, NBA Street Vol. 3 and MVP Baseball 2005, according to Banc of America. The research firm maintained a "buy" rating and $20.25 target price on Activision (nasdaq: ATVI - news - people ), estimating handset and console sales rose 2% in May driven by Doom 3 and Doom 3: The Collector's Edition for the Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT) Xbox. Banc of America reiterated "neutral" ratings on Take-Two Interactive Software (nasdaq: TTWO - news - people ) and THQ (nasdaq: THQI - news - people ), with respective target prices of $24 and $23. The research firm expects May handset and console sales to be flat for Take-Two and up nearly 5% for THQ. Banc of America's top pick in the leisure sector is Activision while its least favorite is Bally's Total Fitness (nyse: BFT - news - people ), rated "sell" with a $2 target price.

The gaming industry is usually flat right before the beginning of the next generation.

I think it's a bit much to use a single month, when the YTD totals are up 14% so far this year. It will definitely be extremely tough, if not impossible, for the second half to continue this pace as we don't have a Halo or a new GTA launching this year (PSP GTA don't count), which accounted for over 9M copies last year alone.

However, with the PSP and DS in the holidays, the 360, a strong PS2 lineup, a strong multiplatfrom lineup, and Zelda, I think it will still be a tremendous year and probably finish overall better than 2004.

According to Sony, it shouldnt start to go flat until shortly before Spring 2006 then :p

Bastards!!

(NPD, not you ;) )

2 weeks late and then already planning on being "a week late" for July based on the retail calendar and that they've released the NPD the second Thursday of the retail month since October of last year.
