BTW, I think Sony still have some stock for the weekend, and with perhaps 10k fat PSP sold (they are probably sold cheaper than Slim, so I expect some people will still buy them)... around 175k for the first week shouldn't be too far off.

I don't think there'll be additional stock. Furthemore, I've heard some shops are starting to sell used fatties at ridiculously low prices, but those sales don't count, I'm afraid.

So, it will probably hit a 140k mark for the week.

But do we know the total shipment of PSP Slim for this week ?

I know it's a joke but it does mean (in my opinion) the userbase gap is made up of a LOT of the kind of people who buy stuff like Carnival Games. DW6 right now would sell more on the PS3 I bet, even with the install base disparity. The trouble is, for how long will this hold up for Sony?

Hopefully Galaxy and Smash Brothers will fix this.

For Sony to claw back their former sales they have to accept their current strategy has failed, which is something they seem unwilling or unable to come to terms with. This is the same for many 3rd parties.

How would Sony do that, though? In their position, it's probably very hard at this time to make some major changes. They can't just drop everything they have and start over. But at least in Europe I think Sony have the right software (Singstar and Buzz, for example) to reach the same market as Wii for PS3. But the biggest hurdle is still the price. With the PS3 price-point it will take years before they reach the Wii audience.

I have no doubts about this. Mario is still the biggest franchise ever and Smash will sell a lot too.

Why ?

Because Galaxy and Smash will attract many gamers. Wii Fit, instead, will espand the population of new gamers. I really don't see how this strategy can become a failure. Perfect timing for both hardcore and non-gamers.

How will they fix whats not broken? People just buy minigames as well as the usual genres.
If the usual genres don't include stuff like the Koei Sengoku Musou Katana or Dewy, there is a problem. 3rd parties will give up trying to innovate with the controller and just start with the minigame collections as a profitable alternative.

Jeses...that makes this PSP Slim number look much more impressive...

Considering Amazon isn't even allowing reservations, I'd wager it's sold out.

I agree about the impressiveness, but notice that DSL sales went up for the few weeks after release. It'll be the week after next that will set the stage for PSP Slim's sales.

Of course it will be DS dominated theres not going to be hardware boosts though. Probably might drop to 60k.

I´m really interested to see which PSP games will profit from this bump besides the obvious FFVII, MGPO and MH2p. We have to consider that software sales were pretty low past weeks only new releases and anticipated games like MP8, FFCC etc managed to sell above 20k after it´s first week recently.

I mean, it´s pretty easy to enter the charts for PSP titles in this low sales period. If next week the number of PSP games doesn´t go up alot the percentage of rebuyers, collectors (6colors) imports from Chinese and Korean won´t be that small as Sony would hope. Because the thing that matters most to publisher are obviously software numbers and really good sales only for hyped and promoted titles like FFVII and by a lesser degree MGPO won´t matter a lot if other games like R-Type psp (2k and it was released the same day as PSPslim) for example just won´t sell.

The only bad point for Sony is the limit given by supply. maybe they have underestimated the PSP Slim effect, but now we can say safely that, if it's really sold out, no more then 140-150k should have been sold in the first week. It's great, but it could have been better.

Then, time is what matters because there is a desert before Minna no Golf for december (I'm speaking aout big games o.c.) and THIS will be the big test for PSP Slim.

I just checked the PSP game release schedule in Japan this year... and it's not really that deserted.

For big games, we have Gundam Battle Chronicle (10/4), Silent Hill Origins (12/6), Golf Portable 2, "Haruhi No Yakusoku" portable (don't look down on this Anime fans service... it will very likely have 100+k LTD. Just take a look at the Amazon Japan chart right now :lol ) and possibly one game from SE (Star Ocean 1 remake perhaps).

There are other "smaller" games like Legend of Heroes SC, Yugioh Tag Force 2, "Anata Wo Yurusanai" sound novel and Dracula X Chronicle that can't be ignored (with sales around 60-100k LTD level each).

I think the price is now a relatively a minor concern in terms of PS3 selling PS2 levels, its their whole strategy which is at fault. They've focused on the wrong kind of games. Big, cinematic epics, and the extension of what happened on PS2 is being seen as old. Nintendo has changed the game at a time it needed changing.

Most people have grown tired of the direction videogames were headed. A more involving, more time consuming game isn't what they want, they want something simple, accessible, with enough depth to keep them playing for a long time, and this is what Nintendo focused on in titles like Nintendogs, Brain Training, Animal Crossing, NSMB and Wii Sports. Graphics don't matter.

People have much less time than ever before, less than they did at PS2's height. The internet, mobile phones, socialising, work, etc, all have a strain, and the amount of time the mass market has for gaming is less and less. It's therefore obvious the bigger barrier to entry a game has the less broad its appeal is going to be. Wii and DS have been designed from the ground up to make gaming as approachable as possible, and they're not just attracting new gamers, they're also being bought by the PS2 audience.

The direction Sony and MS are going in is fine for a lot of the hardcore, but it's a dying style of gaming for the mass market, and this is a huge problem. Add to this the reluctance of consumers to care about digital hub type devices, and it isn't surprising to see these strategies fail.

Well, I can agree about Gundam and Silent Hill Origins and o.c. Golf Portable 2. But the games you're talking abut in your last paragraph will not sell more then 50k LTD in my opinion. Their almost all comparable to R・TYPE TACTICS, that bombed.

And I thought a little bit about MGSO+ and I think I concluded a little bit too fast, because I forgot that the PSP's hardcore userbase is relative big and who bought the previous MGS on PSP, probably is buying now this expansion. If this is true for FF too, next week will tell us, because if sales drop, then it was the hardcore who bought overall. Otherwise there is a truly market expansion and this should be reflected on the PSP Slim's sales in the long term too.

I wonder if Media Create will separate PSP Slim sales from regular PSP sales. You'd think they would considering their history (GBA and DS versions are listed separately) but then shouldn't the Crisis Core special editions have counted as Slims if so? Or did they count as regular PSPs because the official release of PSP Slim is this week?

They will likely all be counted as "PSP" in MC. It's just a change of model number (1000 => 2000). The "Slim and Lite" thing is more like some kind of subtitle or slogan. It's like what Sony did with the PS2 with countless model revisions from 10000 to 70000. Even with PS2 Lite, MC still counted it as "PS2".

No idea. Perhaps, either Nintendo requested MC to count them separately, or Sony requested MC to count their own model spin-offs as one.

I think the better question is wtf are you talking about?

All those games bombed in Japan, or weren't released (because they'd bomb).

Also, if you're trying to suggest PS3 is appealing to a mass market casual crowd because of those titles, it's like saying Wii has the most important hardcore games! PSP and PS3, as experiences, are not in line with where the mass market is, which is obvious. I think, like many Sony fans, you're out of touch with what the mainstream wants ;)

I'm sure Singstar weren't release in Japan yet.
PS3 can appeal to the mass market, all it needs is the price drop + good games. PS2 isn't like the Wii but it sold like hotcakes.

Yeah, actually, it is. Mario Strikers GCN did 65k first week over 190k life. If Strikers Charged can't match it, then this would actually be a confirmed first-party Japanese Wii flop.

DefectiveReject said:
Wasn't 25-30K used to be the average for the PS2??
That seems low, but I'll use old Famitsu numbers to get an idea of how many PS2 weeks were under 30K. Obviously things have slowed down in recent years, so I'll look at the 2000-2004 heyday.

In those 253 weeks, PS2 was under 30K 37 times. It's fair to point out, though, that 11 of them came consecutively during the worst of its 2000 shortages, so beyond that there were 26.

Since checking further ranges was a matter of a few number changes, here's some more information for during that period.

Weeks under 30K: 37
Weeks 30K-40K: 41
Weeks 40K-50K: 50
Weeks 50K-60K: 34
Weeks 60K-70K: 24
Weeks 70K-80K: 23
Weeks 80K-90K: 8
Weeks 90K-100K: 6
Weeks over 100K: 30

The Wii is selling pretty damn poorly considering where it was before. When the PS3 started doing this everyone jeered and sneered; why is the Wii exempt?
When PS3 hit the 26K/week range, its lifetime sales hadn't yet reached PS2's day 1 sales and it was getting heavily overshadowed by the followup to the GameCube. It was a much more industry-shaking turn of events.

Here's the thread of the week where PS3 went to 26K if anyone's interested.

Altho i dont disagree with this, i still cant help thinking of how the situation would be if PS3 was like 25000 yen (like the Wii is), and that it had good japanese directed games avalible at launch.
If GameCube had been called PlayStation 2 and had the most third party support, it would've done better.

Hey JoshuaJSlone, for comparison's sake, if you calculated a weekly sales average using LTD data of all actively tracked platforms right now, what would they be?

That way we can see whether they're beating their lifetime average or not.

Holy crap at the extra 5 pages of people shitting up the thread because the PSP was ahead this week. I was gonna say I wish the NPD threads were more like the MC threads where we actually get good discussion and analysis, but after this week, I'm not so sure it would be that different. :(

Wii and DS sales are horrible, a trend I hope continues continuely to even the market and lessen the non-game trend.

So while I thought this week was going to be ps3 ffvii remake week to place ps3 into a position where it can start getting great buzz to start selling some more consoles, I will settle with PSP selling very well and changing the direction (or as you would say, the tide) and ratios of the handheld market. This is a trend that will continue, especially with the PSP Lite.

PS3 Spring 2008 is where the buzz will be and where you will get announcements like FFVII remake. It's probabaly too early for that right now, but expect 2008 to be the year where PS3 starts breaking the 50k/weekly mark and gets on the path to pass the Wii.

Crisis Core is doing great of course and will sell 1 million copies in under 3 months.

All in all, the future is looking good for the good guys!

In a sales thread, it's never enough to 'just look at the numbers'. If you don't take context into account, numbers lie all the time. You need to take into account history, comparisons, trends, seasons, release schedules...
