i don't know if this chart is from April 2010 or December 2009...

is Metroid M shifted in Japan too ?

last year we biased Nintendo for the weak line-up of Q1 and Q2, but this year they really were able to make it awful...

Has Kensax/Kensaku been getting much promotion? I'm curious as to how Nintendo are handling this, as it seems like the kind of quirky title that could be a surprise success with a segment of the Wii audience.

So that's about it for maaaajor new releases (I'm operating on the assumption that SSF4 will do probably 66-75% of SF4). I expect Joker 2 will show significant decline from Joker.

Pro Yakyuu Spirits yes-its-late comparison
Basically, best ever. 3 SKUs is a first, but even taking out the PS2 version its still the best start ever.

· PYS4 - 1st April 2007 - 1 day of sales 1st week
PS2 - 39k (LTD 197k)
PS3 - 19k (LTD 69k) <- 1st PS3 version

· PYS5 - 1st April 2008 - 6 days of sales 1st week
PS2 - 80k (LTD 200k) <- single SKU LTD all-time high
PS3 - 50k (LTD 104k)

· PYS6 - 16th July 2009 - 4 days of sales 1st week
PS2 - 50k (LTD 118k)
PS3 - 73k (LTD 135k)

· PYS2010 - 1st April 2010 - 4 days of sales 1st week
PS2 - 23k -> 10k (current LTD as of April 11th - 33k)
PS3 - 83k (1st week all-time high) -> 26k (current LTD as of April 11th - 109k)
PSP - 62k -> 26k (current LTD as of April 11th - 88k)

We can clearly see the PS2 version fading away after 2008 while the PS3 version has been on the rise since the start in 2007, but they are less leggy.
2010 going great with PS3 outdoing itself again, PSP picking up from nowhere to a better start than 2009 PS2 edition, and what is possibly the last PS2 version still doing respectable numbers.
In just two weeks, its at ~230k combined, closing on last year totals already, and with a good chance to beat 2008 all-time high total (304k).
All this Famitsu data isn't taking into account what it sold in this thread week (Apr 12-18) since we have no leaks left, but going by MC it sold, at least, another 40k.

How does this year's golden week releases compare to previous years? 3 major new releases on a holiday week seems a bit low to me. None of the major releases are even competing directly on the same platforms, so it's weak across the board imo.

What, promotion or the title? :)

The game is a bit hard to describe, but this - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/And-Kensaku - is probably clear enough. It seems like the kind of slightly off-centre, quirky concept that could - with appropriate promotion - be a minor success, hence the question. It's not the kind of game that would get full-page ads in Famitsu, but Japanese TV and more general magazines might be good ad targets so we'd really need to hear from GAF residents.

Of course, it could bomb like NHK Red & White Quiz Battle!

Golden Week hasn't been a thing in a while now.

2009 Top 5, eventual lifetime sales (release day was April 29th):
Dragon Ball Kai: Saiyajin Raishuu - 192,200
WarioWare DIY - 187,404
Persona PSP - 149,740
Hikkyou Power Pro Major League 2009 PS2 / Wii - 75k / 30k
ToraDora Portable PSP - 43,201
(Monster Hunter G Wii was released the 23rd)

2008 Top 5, eventual lifetime sales (release day was May 1st):
Link's Crossbow Training - 227,621
Emblem of Gundam - 60,698
Pro Yakyuu Family Stadium - 42,605
some hitman bullshit
some sony japanese travel guide bullshit
(Valkyrie Chronicles PS3 and Taiko Drum Master 2 DS came just before Golden Week, on the 24th)

2007 Top 5, eventual lifetime sales (release day was April 26th, outside of Golden Week, so I'll list games from the 26th):
FF12 RW - 524,009
Momotaru Dentetsu DS - 367,331
Big Brain Academy Wii - 319,269
Monster Hunter Portable THE BEST Reprint - 157,105
Planet Puzzle League DS - 142,533

So as you can see, the golden week "effect" more applies to the latent sales of existing stuff rather than huge launches.

Yep, definitely a weak line up.

Get started!

i'll get started

1) nippon ichi's 2010 releases have done better than nintendo's 2010 wii lineup

2) sacred 2, a spike published port of an okay-not-great console port of a mid-level western computer rpg, has outsold all of nintendo's 2010 wii lineup.

3) the entire third party wii lineup in 2010 so far has done 150k cumulatively. for reference, resonance of fate ps3 has outsold the entire wii release lineup, first party and third party, for all of 2010.

of course nintendo is still doing fine because nsmb wii is number one with a bullet and a genuine phenomenon, but i don't think anyone benefits from this sort of play, least of all nintendo who admitted that banking all your hopes on one megahit backfires badly when your megahit isn't.

basically you can take any line from yeats' "the second coming" and apply it to the wii in 2010 in japan.

Yikes. And that says a lot considering Darkside Chronicles makes up around 125-130K of that total.

Which one? All three had more or less identical first weeks. (Not that they'd make any decisions based on Japanese sales to begin with.)

Golden Week was never about multiple huge releases but this year it has the potential to be the biggest ever (from 1996 and on) , from a software sales point, because of Joker 2 and Peace Walker.

But Pre-Golden Week is also important and this one is indeed weak for 2010.

I expect Joker 2 will show significant decline from Joker.

Joker 1 was severely supply constrained, and the DS userbase is likely much more Dragon Quest heavy now than it was when Joker 1 launched. A larger first week shouldn't be out of the question.

Really ? I didn't know... i thought it had a summer release as it was planned for western market, so at this point they will release the game based on the vitality sensor.

it's a long time i don't look at nintendo.jp schedule list, i lost all interests in both Wii and DS in the latest months

But Pre-Golden Week is also important and this one is indeed weak for 2010.

mmh, I think the current Japanese videogame situation has been really pale as of lately.

Could it possibly be that everyone is preparing for "Next-Gen"? 3DS pretty much opens the door to the next gaming era just like DS paved the way into the current generation.

I don't see any developer, 1st or 3rd party, doing anything particularly remarkable on any front. Some sequels, yes, but everything is just minor.

Am I the only one seeing this trend?

That logic is sound enough, but I expect a relatively significant decline installment over installment on many DS games going forward both due to franchise exhaustion and the natural transition from new-hit-software driven hardware sales to catalog software driven hardware sales (IE 2005-ish PS2 in US).

I realize that there's relatively little 2010 evidence from which to test my theory. The two major games that would test my theory would, I guess, be Last Window, which favours me, Dragon Quest VI, which is against my idea, and Pokemon Ranger, which favours me. I don't consider Shiren 4 a good example to use because of the publisher change.

But in general I expect DS software to wind down this year both in volume announced and in volume sold. That Nintendo has literally nothing announced for the DS except Pokemon Black/White and Golden Sun only serves to highlight a trend that I feel is probably true of most Japanese publishers this year.

I suspect you'll see it in the US as well. For example, I'd wager (having, of course, no access to NPD numbers for any of these games) that Strange Journey undersold Devil Survivor in the US, amongst other 2010 : 2009 or earlier comparisons to make. I'd also wager that relatively few high profile DS games that haven't yet been announced will be from this moment on.

Note that I feel all of these processes are entirely natural, especially with an unprecedented device like the DS, and I don't have anyone in particular to criticize.

Evidently not ;)

Seriously though, each major publisher has one or two little titles, and that's about it. Capcom's got MMZC, Ghost Trick, and Okamiden, which is more than most. Square Enix only has DQMJ2, probably the first time since FF3 that they haven't had any announced DS games, Konami pretty much just has (ugh) Love Plus+. As I mentioned there, Nintendo literally just has Golden Sun and Pokemon BW.

Level 5 still has a bunch of stuff (Layton 5, Layton 6, Ninokuni, Fantasy Life, IE3), of course, but I don't expect them to announce any new DS titles besides Layton 6 and maybe another round of IE. In other words, like you said, a few sequels.

Not necessarily.

DQVI DS (first re-release) was expected to outsell all the other DQ remakes on DS (already released on PSX and PS2), and some people here were expecting it to outsell DQV PS2, which sold >1.6M

You'll be surprised how strong DS is. I tell you from now that 2010 will outsell 2009 by a good margin.

First 15 weeks of 2009 (Famitsu top 30 only) DS software - 3.465.681
First 15 weeks of 2009 (Famitsu top 30 only) DS software - 4.498.763

Etrian Odyssey III will outperform I and II, Pokemon Ranger will be close to the previous two, Joker 2 may have a small decline but no way a significant one. Dragon Quest and DS never failed before.

Stumpokapow, what do you take of nintendo's explanation that this is partially due to the absurd diffusion of R4 throughout the playgrounds of the world? hearsay, but, Even In Japan the amount of kids I see using it just on the train and such is disturbing.

My view is Europe the impact is obvious, Japan it's harder to quantify.

At least until the one year anniversary of DQIX's release. The first part of 2009 was barren for DS, and I think part of it was publishers clearing out from DQIX's planned release date of Spring 2009.

Still goes back to 2009's first half for DS being really weak, in my opinion.

That's another point. First week should do better as core series usually increase front-loadedness, especially on the same platform. Even if LTD ends up lower (still don't think so in the case of Joker 2), that's another reason for the first week to be higher.

I expect DS 2010 to outsell 2009 and for the second half. Second half had these top sellers

[NDS] Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (Square Enix) - 4.100.968 / 4.100.968
[NDS] Pokemon Heart Gold / Soul Silver (Pokemon Co.) - 3.382.597 / 3.382.597
[NDS] Friend Collection (Nintendo) - 2.311.948 / 2.311.948
[NDS] Inazuma Eleven 2: Threat of the Invaders - Fire / Blizzard (Level 5) - 943.615 / 943.615

Pokemon Black / White will be huge, bigger than DQIX possibly, Inazuma Eleven 3 will be at least as big as 2, Ni no Kuni looks like a million seller. What is missing is the new yearly unexpected million seller from Nintendo.

I don't believe that R4 is any more prominent than it was in 2009 or 2008.

In other words, I'll dodge the question of how DS piracy impacts DS software sales and development, but answer that I don't feel any downward trajectory in this year is specifically related to piracy.

I'll also add that in the hayday of PSP hackability, early 2008, I constantly argued against arguments that PSP piracy was more of an issue than DS piracy on the grounds that DS piracy is so much easier.

I like these stats. Yakuza and fist of the north star Have almost the exact same numbers and weekly drops. almost spooky

Fist of the North Star: Warriors →３８５,000→７２,000→３４,000 → １９,0000

Maybe Nintendo could greatly increase sales for Mario Galaxy 2 if they only show the side scrolling sections on the TV advertisements. I noticed tons of side-scrolling 2D style parts in the trailers.
It would be misleading to do that but I bet a lot of people would adjust to the 3D gameplay if they gave it a chance.

PSP Go is getting a worthy competitor to 360 and PS2 there, watch out :lol
Btw these numbers are depressing.

Wii almost beating the PS3 again with no significant releases at all. Good job Japan. Way to send the wrong message to Nintendo.

I love Nintendo games and have been a fan of the hardware, but Nintendo needs to take a fall and get some humility back. Realize they need to release more than 3 games of note a year. Maybe be a bit more proactive in getting 3rd party titles. But with sales like these they don't really need to do anything other than what they are doing now. Depressing...

Looking at what you have posted, I don't see how you think second half 2010 will be bigger for the DS than second half 2009. Last year's DS top 3 almost sold a combined 10 million units. Even if Pokemon Black/White sells 5 million units in 2010, there will be a lot of catching up to do, as nothing else this year on the DS is even guaranteed to hit 1.5M.

I bet that the sales of the 2009 DS top 5 beats the sales for the 2010 DS top 10.

Wii is losing to PS3 due to having no titles. I think the right message is there, even if it's not as strong as it could be

Nintendo's biggest problem is that they're still a small company. So without third party support, there really can't be a steady stream of good games for a whole year.

Either Nintendo needs to work with third parties, or they need to grow.

Hopefully, with their next console, they'll be a bit more forward thinking in terms of specs. I'm not saying be bleeding edge, but have a competent online system with specs good enough to run third party games.

They were able to make a powerful but cost effective system with the Gamecube, they should be able to do it again.
