Question to the sales age'ers. Is the Japanese industry still in "decline" as people have been saying.

Not as big as it used to be, but it's been pretty steady for the last couple of years. Console sales are up from a year ago but still small, PSP is doing well and DS is holding on due to DSiLL.

And behold how the mighty has fallen! Final Fantasy XIII is falling like a rock and soon out of the Top 50. It is unlikely it will reach three million copies very soon.
There was exactly 0 chances that FF XIII would have sold 3 million copies in Japan even before its release.

Even though New Super Mario Bros. Wii has fallen one slot to #4, I had to wonder how long it will stay in the Top 10. Its total sales in Japan is around 3.3 million and if it stays in the Top 10 list longer it will eventually reach 4 million and replace Super Mario Land.

Tomodachi Collection not yet falling out of the Top 10 is quite remarkable for a game that was released last July. How long has it been there? Seven months?

its not going to reach 3 million copies? wow, disaster!

Umm..it might struggle to reach 1.9M, much less 3 million :lol :lol

I'm not sure why anyone would think it'd have reached 3 million, though. X squeaked past 3 million when you combine everything. X-2, XII, and IX didn't. Even the most blissfully ignorant optimist wouldn't have shot above 2.2-2.5 (XII / X-2 range) for XIII.

That was supposed to be my point, but I think it came across as more making fun of the sales it did achieve, which was not the intent.

What's so special about online games to separate them from video game software? Or are we talking about World of Warcraft in here?

Revenue from subscriptions, as opposed to revenue from retail unit sales. I think.

It was released in June actually. What's really remarkable and likely a first is that its weekly sales never dropped below 50k so far (Famitsu/Garaph).

This week is the first time it does in Famitsu. It's been below 50K four times in Media-Create, though. Lately, it's been Famitsu = MC + ~10K for some reason. :lol

SMG2 later this year, Zelda, GT5/Versus later this year or next. That's about it.

(possibly RGG4 or Wii Relax but I doubt it)

If Nintendo does to Wiilax what it did to Wii Fit I think you're going to see another massive IP.

I'm skeptical. The minute I saw Wii Fit I thought it was a guaranteed money maker. I just can't seem to wrap my head around the Vitality sensor, though. I'm very interested to see what exactly Nintendo plans for it, because I can't figure out what the market is.

Yeah, Wii Fit was pretty obviously an extension of something that everyone bought into anyway--home fitness stuff. Home fitness equipment has always been very popular. Home fitness videos have always been very popular. Weight loss stuff has always been popular. Yoga stuff has always been popular. The idea that a decently well realized, well advertised execution that combines all four would do well was pretty obvious. The only people who thought it wouldn't do well were people who were looking at it as a video game instead of as a fitness product.

Now, in comparison, what is the non-video game analog to the Vitality Sensor? No one has a pulse meter and there are no popular products that make use of pulse meter technology. It might well be popular in terms of what Nintendo ends up doing with it, and it might well be useful in terms of them using it for video games, but it's not tapping in to an existing extremely popular market they way Wii Fit obviously was.

Honestly I will be surprised if the Vitality Sensor is anything more than an add-on for the Wii-Fit line.

I would have thought that Nintendo tying it into the market for relaxation tools/techniques would have been where we should be looking. I don't think - although I'm not completely familiar with the market - that there's a similar piece of kit out there, but I can see the potential in a simple device that tracks some basic pulse/oxygenation data and ties it into some kind of software that responds to that feedback, or offers advice based on readings.

Yes, it's going to be a harder sell than something like Wii Fit - and probably will be aiming at a more limited market - but if Nintendo handle the targetting right, I don't see why it shouldn't succeed (although I wouldn't expect it to be as monstrously successful as Wii Fit).

No one thinks that. As funny as Onesimos is, the "three" million part was clearly a typo.

Small meta issue: Of course I'm big on the lines and pies and yada yada, but before it even gets to that, what's the best way to compare 2009 and 2010?

Usually I like to assign a week to the year that it has the most days in. However, this creates a big unevenness in 2009 vs 2010. Starting 2009 with December 29, 2008 and 2010 with January 4, 2010 means week 1 isn't going to be comparable with week 1, let alone any other weeks. So is it better to start 2010 early (December 28, 2009, as I believe at least one of the trackers did?), or start 2009 late (January 5, 2009). I guess the biggest advantage of starting late is that it would allow things to start small, since it cuts off some of the preceding holiday bump.

Can't tell that much without numbers, but unless SO4 had a good hold Reginleiv probably didn't do much more than 15K.

There was never any indication that those numbers were legit. Maybe I'm wrong and SO4 did awesome for a 2nd week RPG, but I'm skeptical.

I think you're right to be - I just don't think it's outside the realms of possibility that Wii Fit Plus and SO4 held at around the 27k mark and Reginleiv slid in around 23-25k.

SO4 did 80K or so by Famitsu. A drop to only 27K would be a great hold for a RPG like that.

I agree with everything you say, but I still wouldn't mind a new one for DS.

Taiko Drum series on the Wii has sold a million.

http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/02/16/taiko_drum_master_million/

The Taiko Drum Master series has topped the million sold mark on the Wii, and Namco Bandai will be celebrating. (...) The reissue of the original will be just the game on its own. It's set for March 11 release at ¥3,990.
Great news, they should give western market a chance, PS2 had it's share of casual gamers, but nowhere near the Wii.

ISTR this being reported elsewhere and it was the franchise, so yeah - Taiko Wii + Taiko Wii 2, not just one installment.

Considering the large initial shipment maybe it has already been discounted significantly? (If they don't do it now they'll never sell all those copies)

Something from last week numbers, I was still wondering what new IPs hit as big as God Eater did. Pretty difficult to find though, here are some new IPs respective 1st week launch:

2001 Onimusha - 517k
2006 Love & Berry - 425k (this was a well-known arcade IP though)
2002 Kingdom Hearts - 411k
2001 Devil May Cry - 353k
2010 God Eater - 276k
2007 Wii Fit - 254k

Going before garaph tracks, Gran Turismo (649k), Valkyrie Profile (312k). Hard finding 1st week sales for titles that old. Chrono Trigger was really big, I think it could have had a great start. Its funny seeing how some big franchises now had really low beginnings (pokemon, monster hunter, animal crossing...).
