Media Create Sales Numbers: 27 Dec - 2 Jan 2005

actually, that's not true.
You can get a DS.

PSPs are just nowhere.

I have no idea where these 100k units a week are going, because it AIN'T f*cking Tokyo, that's for sure!

"Anyway, I find it interesting that after all the bitching about non existant weekly shipments Sony still managed to get the promised 0.5milion out. Still doubting the production numbers I told you Charlie? ;)"

pfff - 20k or so short, and looks like the quality control has had to be sacrificed in order to hit that target!

(yes, i believe you)

but i would like to know where these units are going though - i mean, even if tokyo got 1% of those 100k a week units, that's still 1000 units - you'd think Tsutaya/Bic/Sakura-ya/even the big local chains would have units - but nope, there is at least one of us checking these places on a near daily basis, but we're coming up almost entirely empty. I'm not suggesting a conspiracy theory, it's just fecking weird.

I'm off to Aki tomorrow, and on sunday, and probably on monday

The week after the DS launched, the stores were absolutely rammed with units.

Ok...so you can't find a PSP anywhere, right? That might account for its lackluster sales, but what about the software? Why is the DS software outselling PSP software? I dunno. Looks like people are more interested in the DS.

2004 Hardware
PlayStation 2: 2,898,774 | 34.06%
Game Boy Advance SP: 2,647,762 | 31.11%
Game Boy Advance: 200,678 | 2.36%

pretty impressive, the PS2 managed to edge out the GBA+SP by the end of the year

DS also plays GBA games.

DS software so far has been better than PSP. Understandbly software has been slow but DS already has afew big names onboard. Mario, Madden , Wario etc. PSP on the other hand has the golf game and Ridge Racer which isnt as big anymore.

Are you serious? How would PSP software be able to match DS software sales if people can't even buy a PSP to begin with? I hope you're talking about tie ratio...so have we seen any tie ratio numbers for DS and PSP lately?

Erm...

First of all we're talking about Japan here, so Madden is unimportant.

I find it interesting to look at the big PS2 games over the last few years in Japan (million sellers):

Everybody's Golf
Dynasty Warriors
Winning Eleven
Onimusha (although not any more)
Gran Turismo

and FF / DQ obviously.

Well EG and DW are already out there, GT on the way. Onimusha fading in popularity. How many "big games" do they have up their sleeves for Japan?

Sony's less dependent on million sellers than Nintendo, though, because they have a much deeper library than Nintendo does, because they have far more 3rd party publishers. Whether that will be the case on PSP is up in the air...

It's just alarming that 130,000 PSP's were sold last week and no PSP game even broke 40k.

Remember handhelds tend to be different software wise as well. We'll see new stuff too. Its early days still for DS and PSP. But these are my opinions on the early stuff.

GBA library is going to take years and years to match.

The Sawaru Made in Wario total is wrong. It was 377,243 last week, so that puts it at 478,318. Pretty damn impressive numbers for this and Mario, have a feeling Mario could well sneak the million mark.

At the PS2 launch, people whined that everyone was just buying the system to use as a DVD player, but that hasn't stopped PS2 games from selling.

I'm with you that it's alarming, but I am not sure that it will matter in the long term.

Depends on the numbers. I forget the other tracking service numbers I saw, but they had Hot Shots Golf and Dynasty Warriors at 47K last week. For the amount of hardware out there PSP software is getting some good sales.

Hot Shots Golf is at like 170K. Dynasty Warriors and Ridge Racers are at 150K. And the games will keep on selling as hardware becomes more available. As for DS games sales, don't make me point out the obvious. Great game sales but one thing I find weird is that some tracking services say Wario Ware is ahead of Mario 64 but this one Mario 64 is beating Wario Ware by a fair clip.

Does Media Create offer more than a top 10?

It's amazing how this series exploded out of nowhere. The first GBA sold 600K+ in Japan. GC version sold 400K+.

They list more, but not with numbers unless you wanna pay.

Mario 64 and Wario are pretty close in both Famitsu and MC's charts, both gettin on for 500k.

Wario ware games seem quite popular in Japan. I think the touch screen aspect is really selling this in addition to the existing appeal.

The series exploded out of nowhere. The first GBA WW sold 650K+ while the GC version sold 400k+.

Yup. I think the DS version will be biggest yet though. Of course, being a launch title always helps.

Mawaru has also done 400k+ now, will prob touch 500 by the time it's finished.

I think overall we have:

Made In Wario 675k
Made In Wario GC 425k
Made In Wario Twisted 500k
Made In Wario Touched 750k++

Very impressive numbers all round.

Yea, I was about to say, they were neck and neck last week and suddenly Mario is 100k ahead of Wario despite them selling the same amount again.

I love how people are calling the PSP is a failure when it's completely sold out :p

Sony shipped 510k units during this period, that's a 94% sell-through, and probably more since Media Create doesn't account for all the stores.

Bias, gotta love it ;)

This isn't bias. If there is a demand, then it is a failure on Sony's part to not produce enough units to meet it. I understand that restricting supply can pump up hype at launch but afterwards there isn't really any advantage in doing so, especially at holiday season, the demand won't last forever. I'm not calling PSP a failure, but it could have been a bigger success like the DS launch. The truth is, Sony could have produce twice the amount of PSPs and they'll still be sold out. And since the PSP is only released in one market so far, I'd think production problems would being limiting PSP sales for at least another year. You can't just assume that productions problems will smooth out, it is Sony's responsibility to make it happen and I'm sad to say that it's not Sony's strongest area.

Actually I'm curious about this myself - namely just how much of these are going off to importers.
And while we're at shortage conspiracies, what is it with damn Memory Stick unavailability. Is every PSP user buying a 1GB stick to cause this or something :P Not to even mention their prices are dropping, and fast, inspite of that. If this continues Duos will catch up to SD pricing by this summer.

Are they saving up stocks for those markets now, or are they already shipping as much as they can make in Japan?
Sony PR's been saying 0.5M for 2004, 3M worldwide until end of March 2005, all along.

With Europe, US, and Korean launches all coming around March/April, I'd say chances are good we'll see more shortages for each launch.
Unless maybe demand in Japan will completely die out and remaining 2.5M will be all for the other territories :P
