Did BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II come out for the 3DS this week as well? Damn it, if so. Not looking very good for the 3DS, here...

Yes. So I'm guessing it hit below 6k or so unfortunately. :/

Wasn't it like this at the start of the NDS?

Nice to see Continuum Shift II chart. Surprised it's the PSP version as it supposedly drops frames on the 1000 models, which I sadly still own :(.

PSP doing great , not bad numbers for ps3.
3DS need some games , Wii really looking like lost cause right now.
Amagami did really well , if i remember right it's a date sim.

I'm not sure but previous data should tell us.

I mean 8K opening sales for a Naruto game seem low, I thought they were quite popular in Japan?

Honestly can't remember. I do think people expected too much from the launch period though, especially based on what games were out there. That doesn't mean the hardware and software sales are something to be crowing about, but I think the doom & gloom is being seriously overplayed, especially given the way Nintendo seem to have structured their game releases.

Look, the way I see it is that as long as the 3DS isn't below any of the consoles, its doing great. I mean, PSP is much cheaper and has WAY more in the way of software to appeal to people. It's also got a wildly greater install base for games coming out which is why a multiplatform thing like Blazblue would do so much better on PSP.

Doesn't surprise me to see the 3DS software decline each week like it is. The system really needed a core title to push the tech, like Mario 64 DS or Wii Sports.

If NGP owners can play PSP games multiplayer with PSP owners then the best thing Capcom can do is release the next one (3rd G or whatever) for the PSP with tweaks for the NGP (upscaled graphics, two analog controls etc). This way they have both bases covered.

For me its nice to see lazy launches rewarded justly. I'm sure it will change as software improves.

I know this may be toeing the party line a little, but the way Nintendo approached the 3DS launch in Japan - bringing just one title, positioning their big games well out of the launch window, pushing 3rd party games in promotional material (even down to the in-depth IA interviews) etc., really does suggest that they wanted to give up the launch window to third parties either as a gesture or because they believed it would be beneficial.

So, not lazy, but perhaps mistaken?

Agreed. If hardware sales don't pick up when some of the bigger releases hit (DOA:D, Mercenaries 3D, OoT 3D, TotA), there'll be more cause for concern. I wonder whether it'll take something as big as Mario Kart before 3DS starts consistently outselling PSP week-to-week, though.

Now we are moving back the goal posts for expectations.

There is also a lot less competition on the 3DS in terms of available software. 24K shouldn't be that hard to beat with a new system. It is not like Blazblue sold 100k.

This. When you release crap software at launch, and the hardware itself is not super compelling, you do not deserve great sales.

Exactly. They see and know as well as we do that Nintendo made games clobber anything else on a system, and they saw how third party games were starting to do well on the original DS when Nintendo didn't release much. So they tried to reach out and say "Look, develop for our system and we'll give you some time to shine" but let's be honest, consumers buy Nintendo systems for Nintendo games. They should have at least had a Mario somethingorother on Day 1. Even another big franchise like Zelda would have worked. This is the first Nintendo system without one of their big A+ franchises there on Day 1 in some form.

It was a tactical error, that's all. But the big games will start coming soon and given time, things will pick up big time.

Yes, but you have to take into account the percentage of the install base that buys a single game. There are what, over 50 million Wiis out there and less on other systems, so when a game cracks 1mil in sales, that's a BIG deal. Compare that to the 17 million in Japan PSP has and the significantly less the 3DS has right now because its new.

Wii sports more of a core game than Layton? You must mean wide spread appeal.

They should have released Wii Party for the 3DS, apparently that's what Nintendo's audience in Japan is really into.

I don't think it's a stretch to think that by ceding the launch window to mostly 3rd party titles, the expectation was that sales of those titles would bring more higher-profile 3rd parties on board sooner. So whether the strategy is a success depends on the sort of announcements we get for 3DS titles in the coming months. If this makes something like Monster Hunter 3DS a reality, Nintendo will be happy with their maneuver. If not, they're back to shoring up their lineup with more 1st party efforts.

I don't even know why anyone would want a monster hunter on the 3ds now that we have a dual analog hand held coming. The crab method was only bearable for so long.
