Media Create Sales: Week 14, 2013 (Apr 01 - Apr 07)

http://neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=498093

I still remember this thread. I had no idea what some of these people were on back then but the thread is a pretty hilarious read now.
Just reading through it now. Gave me a chuckle, even when it was bumped two months ago people were still under the impression that Bomba Quest X would win over Japan. What a difference a few months makes. Also something of a graveyard of banned accounts.

EDIT: Also, looking at that thread, I really hope no one continues to try and revise history with regard to sales expectations and NSMBU.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
So we have now release dates for The Little Battlers W Super Custom (June 27th ) and Youkai Watch (July 11th). When is the Youkai Watch anime starting ? Really hope it does well, it looks amazing so far.

They also released a new trailer

It seems they learned the biggest lesson they had to learn after Ninokuni on DS did well, but after price cuts and other price cuts: the freaking price.

Ninokuni on DS, due to the big book, was priced 6,800 Yen. An enormous price for a DS game and, above all, for a game aimed at a larger (and young) audience. Instead, Youkai Watch will be 4,800: very low for a third party title on 3DS and on par with Nintendo titles. A good decision.

Oh, yes. At that price, it's the same as a regular 1st party title, and much cheaper than most 3rd party games. It should do well.

Nice, lets hope it does well. L5 could need another hit after Laytons last failure.

I just preordered Soul Sacrifice. The impressions were pretty good back when it came out, but are any Gaffers still actively playing it?

You should check out this thread

I actually think the WiiU third party scenario makes sense. I think you can classify third parties' games in Japan in three tiers:

1) Niche - The WiiU was unlikely to get these games because they don't want to abandon their core base and most of them seem satisfied on PS3.

2) Normal: games like SB4, Project J versus , DS2, JoJo'setc. These are the games the WiiU should be getting and imo had the most chance of getting. However if you look at the third parties that are putting out those games and the success they had with the Wii we see most of their successes did not come from their core franchises.

Namco Bandai is big pub on this tier and if you look at their reports:

http://www.bandainamco.co.jp/en/ir/financial/pdf_bnh/en_20120508_2.pdf

We see that in the home console sector around 60% of sales are on PS3, 80% on ps3 and 360 and so only 20% on Wii. That was with the large install base so to NB supporting the WiiU is not a priority. (this is 2012 btw)

3) The big publishers like SE, Capcom and Konami: I am pretty sure SE and Konami are not going to give the WiiU a lot of support but Capcom seems to have a great relationship with Nintendo so theres a chance there. I am sure Capcom will jump on when theres a decent userbase.

In retrospect, I think Nintendo should of went after the second tier games rather than the few third tier games.

The problem with Capcom is that the best i see them doing is RE6 and maybe SDragon's Dogma late ports. Support will likely dry up for the next entries in the series and obviously Deep Down won't be on Wii U

Once again, another confirmation from Hideo Baba that the Tales studio is focused on the PS3 and not next-gen for now (how many times has he been asked this same question I wonder?):

Speaking of hardware, any thoughts on the PS4?

I can’t really comment on that, though I will say that we haven’t started any development on any next generation systems. We’re still focused on the PS3.

When it comes to platforms, it all comes down to what our fans have. We’ve done lots of research and have determined that most Tales fans have PlayStation 3s, which is why most of the main Tales of games come out for that platform.

well it makes sense not to ignore that install base on ps3.

Altough if the PS4 shoots out of the gates and sells gangbusters over there( unlikely, but not impossible) they will be on board after a year .

otherwise i think they will jump aboard in year 3

You mean download cards? Can you activate the code on the eShop already?

Yeah, download cards. No, I don't think you can. No pre-downloading or activating, iirc. I think it just says that number doesn't work until the game is up (or it worked that way for the DQX beta).

Little Battlers and Youkai Watch only two weeks apart?

Kids have tonnes of expendable money for video games!

They're probably looking long-term with Youkai Watch as the anime is a summer premiere at the earliest. LBX W is a cheapo release so they won't care if it bombas (which it won't if LBX EB is anything to go by).

"We’ve done lots of research and have determined that most Tales fans have PlayStation 3s, which is why most of the main Tales of games come out for that platform."

So they are comparing sales numbers and are now calling that "research". Had they done any actual research they might have not released millions of Tales games for everything except PS3 for so many years.

those releases might have been namco's decisions and not Baba's

and tales has always favored playstation.

what they probably mean is, "if you like Japanese games, you should have a PS3 by now"

Finally a brand new project by Sega on 3DS that isn't Sonic. I hope this is just a beginning and that we will see other games coming from them.

Liberation Maiden SIN is awesome and random at the same time. :lol

Well, so far the only retail games Sega seems to be making in Japan that aren't part of their four stated brands for the West are Yakuza, Shining, that soccer game, and Miku.

Phantasy Star sticks out as a possibility in my mind as another series they might bring back to retail (as more than a buyable version of an f2p game), but not much else is popping out.

And Phantasy Star Online 2 on Vita. And Sonic titles (even if Racing Transformed hasn't been released over there). Last SEGA 3DS retail game in Japan has been...heh, Hatsune Miku Project Mirai, on March 8th 2012.

I'm guessing we'll see a Sonic 3DS this year and a Mario & Sonic game next year. As for other future support...I'll wait and see 'cause it's Sega.

Yeah I think Sega is still largely done with retail outside of a small number of (relative to their line-up) strong brands.

It's just that the few brands they're pushing in Japan are (logically) different than the ones in the West.

I would kind of expect more from Sega on the eShop than I would at retail unless series like Shining start moving over.

SEGA should try a Phantasy Star Universe (Portable) entry on PS3 and Vita. I'm sure Sony would help with marketing, and it would be the only proper looking co-operative monster killing game on PS3.

I can see Shining going to PS3 or 3DS.

Nirolak

I kind of feel it's more likely they would just put PSO2 on PS3 and/or PS4.

Sega's Japanese structure is incredibly opaque however so it's hard to tell what is actually going on.

Maybe Nintendo will let Sega start releasing Master System/Genesis games on the eShop? I could also see them doing another round of their 3D Classics after they get done with the first four.

Was hoping they would've learned by now and brought the real series to the 3DS. Oh, well.

Didn't the Diva F sell over 200,000 and is the second biggest Vita game in Japan? It seems like they're doing well on it, I don't know why'd they would switch.

Well, maybe when there's a Nintendo device with a screen big enough to display no-chibi Miku in all her...vocaloidic fashion. Don't you remember? SEGA said they tried with a classic Diva look, but they thought it wasn't good on 3DS screen, so they went with the Mirai look.

Yeah given that they're doing Vita/PS3 multiplat on Project Diva, it makes sense to differentiate the 3DS game so they can keep up the yearly pace with products that don't seem like clones.

I throw out a bold prediction:

Project Diva F2 - PS3/Vita - 2014.
Project Mirai 3 - 3DS - 2015.

Wow, didn't know that. But they did on PSP right? That's not much different than 3DS.

We were discussing Mirai just a few weeks ago. :p

Miku 3DS - 181,441
Well, Project Mirai 2 seems like an easy bet then. Can't believe it did nearly as much as Project Diva f.
You'd THINK they'd announce another 3DS retail game period by now... And Diva f Vita is at 205k, yep, pretty damn close.
You'd think so but this is SEGA we're talking about. Have they even announced anything for the 3DS lately apart from Game Gear classics?

I'm going to stick with the product differentiation argument given the PSP and iOS releases.

It's not unusual for developers to give... unique alternative reasonings for product decisions.
