Actually i think in Japan it did everything that could be resonably expected from reboot of series done by western devs.

I think Wii U will fall somewhere around where the PS3 is now when it's all said and done. But for Japan, I think Mario Kart and 3D Mario should be out this year to try and repeat the 3DS situation.
Probably less with the planning, more with the panic. Their E3 is going to seem pretty dismal if there are no surprises, and Orbis and Durango are everywhere.
360 wasn't quite as dead then as it is now, no?
I can't see how Nintendo can afford not to have at least one of those games out by the holiday season, though.

Wii U is struggling really bad in Japan but it is reasonable since it has a piss poor line up in Japan for Q1.
I remember there being a thread while back saying is there any reason the Wii U would not dominate Japanese sales as it had NSMBU, DQX and MH. Now it is getting outsold by the PS3 without a price cut. Though that question is still up for debate in the long term it certainly does not seem it will dominate this first half of the year like many though.
The new announcements while showed Nintendo's first party strength, does not mean much as no release dates were given. First half of the year still looks just as barren and there is another problem.

The same thing (that is, 360 version selling less and PS3 version selling more) can be observed on COD.
At this point, the 360 is dead indeed, but it seems most users now also have a PS3, so if they a want a game, they'd just buy it for the Sony system.
The thing with the current Wii U situation, either as an owner or not, is that we had no idea of what was coming besides 4-5 confirmed titles. Yes, there were the usual suspects that would eventually come, and just as Iwata said, the announcement of such titles are non-news and thus they will be shown later at E3, but at least there is now a tangible idea of what is coming in the next 1-3 years.
As for running out of surprises before the E3 I don't really think so, with today the main absence being Retro's new game/s, so that will be a key announcement for E3 alongside the Mario games. And there could be some more crossover collaborations like SMTXFE that Nintendo are still keeping secret about.
So for Nintendo's E3 (first party games and collaborations) show, I don't think theres anything to worry about. The most important thing at the moment is the third-party output, if first day ports or exclusives aren't soon announced, then the system will keep the stigma of being a Nintendo console that only plays Nintendo games, and without any expanded-audience hits (like it happened with DS and Wii) then they will just rely on the core fans of their current content.
If you think about it, the other option Nintendo had was to delay the console launch until spring this year and get it for Q1FY14, but that would have meant missing the holiday season and the even lower Q4 sales-period and falling even harder to meet they FY13 expectations, to have a stronger launch in April with several more games ready.
What would have been better in your opinion? Maybe it was too late for them to delay the launch when they saw that some titles would still need 3-6 more months of development.

Are they even able to be in the black this FY? So far they only have posted losses right. Nintendo really needs to turn it around and quick. WiiU get's the most attention, but I think a bigger concern is the 3DS underperforming worldwide.
And am I mssing the point here, announcing 7,8 or 9 games doesn't matter in the big picture. What's important is that Nintendo creates a environment that enables a steady flow of games the comming 5 years. They need to make the WiiU a viable platform for third party developers.
This is the problem when the hook Nintendo is providing is not interesting. Atleast with the Wii periods of drought were fine as the existing games were gimmicky enough for casuals to buy consoles in hordes. Now with the tablet offplay gaming hook not luring in the casuals they needed third party support to manage the drought. Nintendo can have all the best first party games they want but each of them will take time to develop and bring to the market. Without third party there will always be a drought and therefore there will always be a perception that WiiU has no games no matter how many great first party games it has to boast about. Nintendo needs more third party games running on their system even if they are just casual fillers. Something is better than nothing.
Yup. This is the only way WiiU can make it. Atleast in the West. Not sure about Japan.

The ND acknowledged what we've been seeing for months. The Wii U is a sales flop out of the gate. If people think Panic Mode Nintendo is the best Nintendo, you're about to get your wish. I just hope it doesn't mean more rushed titles like Mario Kart 3DS, which was severely lacking in modes. If these numbers continue, as well as the flop numbers in Europe and the US, I don't see how they reach their stated goal for April.

You can't have it both ways. They don't announce games, "Panic Nintendo". They announce games, "It's not enough". Reminds me of clients on these projects never knowing what they want.
I think the panic mode was saying that Mario, Mario Kart, and Smash will be at E3- those are mainstream titles investors would be aware of.
The other stuff I imagine was due to be shown off around this time anyways.

I know they showed off Dragon Quest X a lot, but I think everything else was at different events.
There´s absolutely zero chance that they reach their 5.5 million goal at this point. What they can do is to start putting the software out, cut the price and get the ball rolling late 2013/early 2014.

I think best case scenario for Wii U is that it gets Wario Ware, Wii Fit U, and Pikmin 3 out by the end of Q2. Yoshi might be a late July title with The Wonderful 101 being sometime before fall, and then fall is all up in the air. Gonna be a rough year for the Wii U, if it can rebound or not next holiday season with a pricedrop is gonna be the real question.
Edit: I think the only 3rd party games we really know of on Wii U right now are Revelations and maybe a Musou game that I can't think of right now. Hopefully more are on their way, or the schedule will be pretty damn bleak. Can someone give me a list of announced Japanese 3rd party games?

It's a policy that's been around since 2009 or before, so it's not exactly "new." Looking back, maybe the "policy" was a way to cover up the fact that releases were drying up something fierce on Wii and DS around that time? It is/was an actual policy, though.
Sony failed at the moment they released the Vita. This should never have happened.

It's also interesting to note that DMC1 and 4 (the two best selling games) came out early in a console's generation. And somebody made a point over at gamefaqs of all places, but DMC4 was coming off of DMC3 (the best action game of all time.) However DMC3 suffered because of DMC2. Is DmC suffering because of the disappointing DMC4?

Yeah. Nintendo fans when pressured in a corner, especially when it has got do with with sales always use the Vita as an escape route to their troubles.
Likewise people are now also doing the opposite and only concentrating on the poor WiiU sales.
Wii U and Vita are similar in one regard though; it is clear both companies rely much more on their other console. Nintendo's main is the 3DS and with Sony it is the PS3 for now.

Animal Crossing is holding up really well, I could see it passing the 4.5 million mark in Japan with relative ease. With Dragon Quest coming up soon, it's not gonna lose any steam at all this year.
Wii U not doing so hot, but hopefully it can build a nice library before the next Playstation comes out.

If the next ND to include third-party Wii U games fails to deliver, or even fails to materialize by, oh, the end of February, it's probably 100% safe to assume the worst. As opposed to, I guess, 80% safe now.

There is a difference, though. Sony's response to the Vita's problems has been aloof. Nintendo's response to the Wii U's troubles has been anything but. The same was true when the 3DS was struggling. Nintendo having all of their horses in the video game race means they put everything on the line.
