Media Create Sales: Week 34, 2013 (Aug 19 - Aug 25)

Is the US wiiu price drop announcement likely to have an effect on sales in Japan? I know it sounds weird but theres got to be a feeling that it's going to come down everywhere right?

Theres still no official rrp drop for EU yet either which is weird imo. Maybe Japan and Europe are waiting till closer to their dates to announce so as not to cripple sales in the short term?

I thought the price drop was already announced for Europe as well?

I thought the price drop was already announced for Europe as well?

Only a comment about trade price drops for retailers which should flow onto consumers iirc, no official rrp drop via PR. Obviously it's comming but to not come out and say it is strange i think.

edit : The WW bundle is at a lower rrp i think but nothing about current deluxe model dropping.

I meant to ask. It seems like a lot of PSP games were ports of hentai stuff with the actual hentai removed. When did that trend start? I think Grisaia's the same thing - it came out a few weeks ago for the Vita.
Searching the Visual Novel Database for games on consoles with the "Sexual Content" tag, it would seem it started in 96 when Elf ported some of their games to the SNES, the Saturn and the PS1.

The SNES only got two, Dragon Knight 4 and Doukyuusei 2, while the PS1 and Saturn got around 15-20. Further, the Dreamcast got ~50, while the PS2 was over 200. The PS3 got only 15-20 again, with the focus seeming moving to the PSP (which has nearly as many titles as the PS2). Right now it seems iOS and Android are popular (50-70 titles), with the Vita now starting to pick up the publishers who were previously porting VNs to the PSP.

Congratulation to the winners!

The Wonderful 101 really screwed up our predictions, the results by percentage are horribly bad. It wasn't easy to predict that this game would turn into such a nuclear bomb. Just 2.000 more units than MadWorld (a black-and-white action game with zero appeal for mainstream audiences and distributed by a very small publisher), it looks so surreal.

By the way, according to Sinobi's blog, Monster Hunter 4 initial shipment was once again increased (this is the 4th time) and is well over the million mark. Now they are expecting a first shipment of around 1.5 million units.

Wonder if that's the last increase we'll see or if it'll go even bigger?

Pokemon on next month may eat into potential MH4 sales. I mean, 3DS carts are not flash so that if Nintendo puts higher priority on Pokemon then Capcom will be starved for carts.
(As for e-shop I don't know if something you can't resell would be popular among Japanese kids).

Download cards worked for Animal Crossing, they'll work again for Monster Hunter and Pokemon if there are so big supply problems.

Obviously Minami gets to make the call on things like this, but if Kamiya has his way, it looks like regardless of how Bayonetta 2 does, Nintendo might end up with a dead brand.

4gamers said:
With the help of Nintendo, we will be able to play Bayonetta 2 after all. How will you push this title to the next level while still keeping gamers satisfied? They often want conflicting things. They want new ideas, but still more of the same. How do you deal with that?

Kamiya: I don't really have a problem with making sequels. Above all, I want to make games that are fun. This is the most important thing for me. So next to new IP's, I also like to make sequels. The point you're making however, is very good. With the first title of a new franchise, there are so many good ideas, so many things you want to do. Unfortunately, you can't use all of them in the game. In the sequel, you can use cancelled ideas from the first game. I do have the feeling most of those ideas are used when you reach the third game though and that developers only make a third game because the fans want it. That's why I don't really see a Bayonetta 3 happening in the future. I am fortunate that I am able to create many games from scratch.

Why are they selling the dubbed/subbed version of COD separately? Pretty sure there is enough room on a PS3 disk to have both and they could have a language pack disc install on 360. Seems backward when games in North America end Europe have many different languages in the same release.
It's a timeliness/milking issue. The subbed version comes out within a month of the global release, then the dubbed version releases 1-2 months after.

But you could come up with new ideas for a third game, too. See for example Super Mario Bros. 3. Though I do agree that the third entry in many series today doesn't seem to be the most inventive one.

He's right. Just look at Uncharted 3, Mass Effect 3,Lost planet 3 Crysis 3, Dead Space 3. It's mainly bad to do when you dont have more powerful hardware to work with to add more things so the 3rd ends up being a rehash or really different to the point where no one asked for that. By the way NPC Pikmin 2 being only 9 spots down from 3 is hilarious.

I'm not sure I'd really consider SMB3 or DMC3 to be bad.

Those were actually 2 exceptions that came to mind. Although DMC2 and SMB2 were very different and werent regular sequels so they aren't really the same. I'm struggling to think of a series where it followed a similar gameplay progression where the sequels constantly got better.

Well I mean you included Lost Planet 3 which is one of the least consistent series in gaming in your evidence pile. :p

I'll also suggest Final Fantasy VI (third game of the SNES era) and San Andreas (third GTA of the PS2 era).

People also seemed to like BioShock 3 though I haven't played it yet so I won't weight in personally.

San Andreas is a really good example actually as that series got better and better and was pretty much a new series by 3

Or Pikmin 3 as a more recent example.

I think this is more of a specific observation from Kamiya applicable to his personal experience working in the industry. He probably thinks that in games he directs, once you hit the third or fourth sequel, you start running out of ideas and having to really branch out of the original game's design to bring something new to the table so you might as well make something new. If I'm not mistaken, I think that's how devil may cry came to be too.

Also I don't think it's a remark on the general quality of sequels either, more like a personal preference once again. It's like him saying that he doesn't like games where inputs are slow and uncancellable, it doesn't mean that the games that have these features are necessarily bad in his book.

edit: Now that I think about it, I wonder what he thinks about the Monster Hunters series.

ME3 and DS3 are bad examples because they were crap due to change of direction in their own series and chasing after new audience. And in both those cases decline started with part 2.

I think the trick that can work well is to alternate revolution and refinement sequels despite being in the same generation.

Like:

New Idea -> Refine ideas and don't add as much -> Lots of new ideas -> Refine ideas and don't add as much -> etc.

That way you introduce lots of new ideas, then make sure they're good and you have a solid base to work from, and then add in enough new ideas that it doesn't feel like a retread of the second title.

Like MGS3 was a smart departure from MGS2 I felt whereas MGS2 was a more obvious evolution of MGS1. That's cross-generation, but the revolution still happened within the same gen.

Or Pikmin 3 as a more recent example.

I definitely think there's an argument to be made that good third entries often don't resemble the original game very much, whereas a lot of good direct sequels tend to.

This obviously isn't universal (hi Dragon Quest), but a lot of the third games that stick out to me do make some notable changes.

IMO Bayonetta was already dead after the first one .

This is how I see it as well, the game was not set up for sequels.

The game felt very complete and she was powered up the wazoo (kind of like what happened with Dante).

Unless they pull a Nero I don't see how they can continue on and not have it feel pointless.

Yeah it seems there were a lot in the past. I guess it was a knee jerk reaction to all the recent 3rd games i felt underwhelmed

I think that's kind of the results of troubled series trying to double down on what's popular.

Like Dead Space 3 was a reaction to Dead Space 2 not selling enough to survive another entry if this one didn't do well, and Crysis 3 was pretty similar. Now Dead Space is on ice and I'm not convinced EA is publishing any more Crysis games.

When you start chasing the market too heavily you start to lose what people liked about your game without bringing something new and unique to the table, and it just gets bad.

Does COD: Modern Warfare count? it was like the 5th call of duty this gen but only the 3rd mainline game however only the 2nd by Infinity ward so maybe Modern Warfare 2 should count or counter count?

What about COD: Black ops even though it was the 4th? COD this gen by Treyarch it was only the third main game?

:p

What are games that successfully did that? I can only think of:
Resident Evil 4
Super Mario 3D Land

World of Warcraft
Fallout 3 kinda, maybe?

Successfully do what?

Chase whats popular, though I don't understand what 3d land was chasing and tps's weren't popular before RE 4 i dont think?

edit: oh see what he means now, well he explained it so i would be dumb if I didn't but you know what i mean.

Yay for FFXIV. I wonder, would the PC version even register on the Japanese charts?

Yea, those seem like good examples.

Change the direction of a series another way and still be received positively and sell well.

CoD and Battlefield were adding each other's features for a while (unlocks from Battlefield, ironsights from CoD, mode exchange).

3D Land I'd see as chasing accessibility.

While not 100% well received, Tomb Raider generally got a good reception. BioShock also successfully took System Shock 2's gameplay style to the masses by removing quite a bit, though for that one they had a new name.

By the way, according to Sinobi's blog, Monster Hunter 4 initial shipment was once again increased (this is the 4th time) and is well over the million mark. Now they are expecting a first shipment of around 1.5 million units.

sinobi isn't very confident the initial shipment will reach 1,5 million.

1,5 looks enough for first 2 days as long as they have ready a big second shipment for second week.

Was the Sinobi first shipment and Famitsu sellthrough thing clearified? Sinobi's first shipment number did not match with what Famitsu reported of sellthrough percentage.

Yes, I'd expect quite over 400k for JoJo,'s first week. Which is absolutely insane.

I might be wrong here, but wasn't there some news floating around that JoJo got 500k pre-orders? If yes, why wouldn't the shipment be bigger than that?

Unless the 500k referred strictly to the initial shipment and it was falsely reported.

Pre-orders from stores to sell to people (and their own pre-orders).
