Media Create Sales: Week 35, 2012 (Aug 27 - Sep 02)

The lack of sales for any catalog Vita titles looks like a lot of gamers picked it up to play one game, and are planning to sell it all back once they're done with it. They're buying into this game but not buying into the ecosystem as a whole, which is worrisome.

Vita has a wonderful selection of DD titles. I mean, right now (I have a Japanese Vita) I can buy any one of about 400 PS1 games, and hundreds and hundreds of PSP games. Yeah you can do that on a PSP too, but the games look about 10x better on the Vita. Not to mention every PSV title released thus far too. I buy lots of retail games on the 3DS, but Nintendo doesn't give me much choice as they don't let me download nearly any of them. On my Vita, I have dozens of games, but only one I've bought at retail. I imagine many others are like me. It's a lot like my ipad really. Just a wonderful portable HD gaming console with hundreds of excellent games to choose from.

Great to see more people buying Vita hardware. Now, the true test will be if it shoots back down to single digits or not next week.

Seriously, who would have seen SK at this level coming? Especially on a Nintendo console.

Yeah it's a surprise hit. Especially considering similar game like Ikki Tousen (sp?) sold really badly previously. Marvelous must really be happy with its decision to support the 3DS early on.

The PC game was already a big success, so I imagine that might actually make the port less appealing as well since the fanbase didn't seem offended by the original platform.

Is the game cross compitable Vita ? ie if you buy the Vita person , your characters , stats and everything gets carried forward and continue playing it on Vita ?

If yes then many might prefer playing it on a handheld then ?

There's absolutly no proof for this. No need for the new Vita owners to immediatly buy the whole catalog when the main reason for picking it up was a certain game. They want to play that game first anyway so why should they buy other games? That doesn't mean they won't eventually though.

Famitsu first week:

[SAT] Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers (Atlus) {1997-11-13} - 160,850
[PS1] Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers (Atlus) {1999-04-08} - 60,905
[NDS] Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor (Atlus) {2009-01-15} - 56,689
[NDS] Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 (Atlus) {2011-07-28} - 62,246
[3DS] Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers (Atlus) {2012-08-30} - 73,690

This confirms the great result of a 15 year old porting; 3DS is such a beast.

This. Some posters have said that people bought Persona 4, finished the game and returned it, it might happen with miku too but we have to wait to see.

3DS sales were rising (off the back of something I've now forgotten) am pretty sure and had been around 40k for a few months/weeks. The 3DS sales are still above usual sales now.

Not to mention a big rise of 3DS sales over the past few weeks. I'd say people have been brought to the platform by the XL - MH3G sales are hard to explain otherwise really.

Its not 'mass amounts' but remember those 60k+ sales are all new sales still, so its not like people aren't still coming to the platform.

Do people not understand what selling a unit means? XL is selling about double the 3DS original. Seems obvious its what the consumer is looking for. How can you even argue otherwise from this weeks data let alone the last few weeks?

It dropped to 40k after XL SKU was annouced...

Not exactly the most apt comparison, but here's it anyway:

[PSP] Persona - 95,406
[PSP] Persona 2:IS - 62,091
[PSP] Persona 2:EP - 28,212
[3DS] Soul Hackers - 73.690
I think it's a pretty apt comparison, being all the 32bit Megaten ports to handhelds. Also worth pointing out that Devil Summoner PSP megabombed since it never even ranked, so Soul Hackers 3DS looks really great compared to it's predecessor.

Celceta is a new game, so it could perform like Seven (the others are ports/remakes).
Technically Celceta is a Ys IV remake.

I was under the impression that was more because the PS3 is pretty much the de facto blu-ray player in Japan so you got a lot of fans of the anime who don't usually play games picking it up. I heard the stores were flooded with used copies the week after release.

Similarly, Ishaan from Siliconera was saying the same thing about the Tales games on the PS3 since the series tends to employ certain anime tropes.
Did any One Piece Bluray anime get released in that week? Otherwise i dont think this is much of a factor. Used games happen a lot of times, especially with big sellers that can be finished/beaten relatively fast.

I would assume he means because it is thematically a game about staring at young girls with gigantic boobs as their clothes gets shredded.
Yeah, that could be.

No. It was around 45k then Dragon Quest bumped it to 100k then 60k for a few weeks. Then 3DS XL brought it down to 45k (over time though, no crash as Alrus says)

The 3DS has not been posting 65k consistently week in week out. It rises and falls, it rose to 60k originally, it wasn't the baseline.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Looking at 3DS software sales, how many reached the 100k milestone?

Adding Run for the Money, around 35 titles did at least 100k on 3DS

Yes, don't celebrate. Vita doesn't have games announced to support this bump.

It will go below 10k in a few weeks again.
Especially with quite a few good games coming out in less than a month? LBP, Ys, DJ MAX, Earth Defense Force? Come on!
How the hell is miku so popular? People would really buy a console for one game?
Yeah, the would. It's just one of those games. I've already sold mine, but shh.

How does LBP actually do Japan? I would say it should be pretty big, but you never know.

LBP and DJ Max are extremely niche in Japan, they're not going to bump hardware at all. Ys is a new entry so it might sell a bit better but it will likely top out at around 60-70k at best. EDF is not a vita exclusive.

XL is more popular than original 3DS, sure it might not be pulling in a ton of new potential customers, but its still pulling in more than the the original 3DS, otherwise its numbers wouldn't be twice bigger every week.

Its similar to the DSLite in that its helping the 3DS line sell more, ofcourse to a lesser degree than the DSLite since its not a complete replacement.

Just wait for 3DSL with OLED screen (If thats possible?)

Thanks. Those are some bizzare numbers for LBP. The first one did over 100k and then the PSP one and LBP2 barely did 51k combined.

They aren't that bizarre. People played it on PS3 and didn't like it!

Hell the sequels follow a somewhat similar track in the west.

wow @ those Miku sales.

The Atlus fanboy within me wished for at least 100k for Soul Hackers. I know, wishful thinking.

But most of those comes out on the same day, so the combined sales might give Vita a nice boost.

Vita has been selling about 10k a week though. This just makes those who would buy in the future to buy now, whilst others DO buy for one game and then some people it just 'adds' to the value of the Vita (they might be interested in other games on it and this is the 'tipping point').

Those sales are great for the Vita, but their not that shocking all things considered.

Next week the Vita will drop harder than post-P4G when the hardware bundles run out.
