Media Create Sales: Week 50, 2012 (Dec 10 - Dec 16)

Mpl90

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
If you don't see how those numbers are at least decent, I daresay you haven't been paying much attention to Sales-Age over the years. Ditto software sales.

I would bet cash that it won't go under 100K next week, I seriously would.

Heavy: "Oh, sorry, now I just checked and now I've seen I was wrong. I should've thought to look at numbers before posting. Sorry, you're right, go on"

And then the loop will continue. And continue, and continue, and continue.

I'm happy to be a lower cased non-gamer wasting 100 hours of my life on New Leaf with just the one stick ;)

You know you'd still be able to do that if the unit had two sticks, right?

Not that it really matters. It doesn't and you're right, the masses don't care.

I'm disappointed in the hardware but even more so in the software situation.

The PS1 and PS2 not only dominated their respective gens but also had the libraries of games to show for it, some of the best in gaming.

Wii? Dominated by a landslide and hands down has one of the worst library of games I can think of for any console.

Same thing is happening with the 3DS so far (for me), its not so much the winning that I mind its the library of games its doing it with.

3DS has a great library for this region that it's doing well in. Unless you live in Japan, the 3DS is not dominating any other region, and if you're just upset about it doing better than Vita than that's Sony's fault.

Heavy: "Oh, sorry, now I just checked and now I've seen I was wrong. I should've thought to look at numbers before posting. Sorry, you're right, go on"

And then the loop will continue. And continue, and continue, and continue.

Or just stop posting in said thread but whatever.

Huge drop-off for Wii U. I predicted 130-140 lol got something right. I don't see how those numbers are good. Next week it will probably go below 100k. Software sales are non-existent save for NSMBU and sort of Nintendoland.

You have an alarming propensity to speak out on subjects that you are completely ignorant about. I'd curtail that habit if I were you.

The only thing soul sacrifice has to hang on to is that mh4 is now coming out in summer 2013. I still would not put any faith in its sales, but outlook has certainly improved from grim.

Of note, lots of places (including Akiba's Yodobashi Camera) still won't have Animal Crossing available until at least December 25th – it's still very much sold out. Nintendo is clearly not pulling its weight when it comes to ensuring copies are waiting on shelves to be bought, which is possibly part of their strategy.

Should be interesting to see how high the 3DS goes next week! The shift in the calendar and all...

The Wii U did great, and next week should see an increase, but I wonder just how big of an increase. Next week is going to be very telling for Nintendo.

As for software, no real surprises except for Paper Mario!

Poor poor Vita.

Why are you guys giving Heavy the attention he craves for?

He'll just end up beeing Tabris'd from here anyway. (Or worse, Frenched)

damn @ some of those #'s.
and im with Dave & co here; masses may not give a shit about a 2nd stick, and im loving my 3DS just fine without it but im not gonna pretend having one wouldn'tve been better, at least for 3rd party stuff anyway. speaking of, both platforms could use more 3rd party stuff.

looks like my Yakuza 5 should clear a half mill no problem...did that investment pay off, what kinda #'s did prior games in the series do?

Stores are still short of cards too right? I don't understand how that happens. Still Japan needs to learn what digital software is and that there are many ways to add to your eShop account.

Sure they have. It's just that Sony constrained financially. Add to that the fact that the market just isn't that interested in a premium handheld and PS Vita is in a tough spot. I think they will support the vita for another year or two, they cannot EOL it before the PS4 comes out though for PR reasons.

It will be interesting to see if they plan on having another handheld in the future. I'm guessing not because the handheld market is only going to get smaller going forward, and Nintendo is in a far far stronger position wrt IP and balance sheet.

Vita is a really nice swan song as far as industrial design goes.

Well, they did pump out a few new colours in a desperate bid to ignite some more interest, I guess. I suppose my point is that I just don't see Sony throwing themselves at it like they should for a new PlayStation device. All year, it looked like the effort of Sony has been thrown behind the PS3 instead, both from a first party perspective and third party perspective. The problem I see for them is that after this holiday, Sony will likely start ramping up internally for the PS4 leaving the Vita in the same position it has been for the past year; like it is stuck somewhere between a rock and hard place, if you will. I just don't see the Vita having a future because Sony, looking at the way things are right now, will focus more on the console side of things rather than the handheld market.

I agree about the industrial design. Stunning device.

They've put some effort into advertising here in the UK. It's hard to say what kind of effect that is having without hardware numbers though. I'm hoping that they predominantly focus their Vita efforts over here as it seems like Japan has already firmly made its mind up. Handhelds aren't traditionally that big with western devs but if Sony are going to keep the Vita alive, they need to try and change that fact.

True and I've seen more in Canada, but again it isn't simply just the advertising. There just doesn't seem to be a drive for the Vita, like they released it, were happy for it and then realized they made a mistake. I'd like to seem them put more of a focus on the western side of things, because you are right, Japan seems to have made up their mind regarding which they'd be more likely to support. Sony just needs to start really driving the Vita and being aggressive with it.

Stores are still short of cards too right? I don't understand how that happens. Still Japan needs to learn what digital software is and that there are many ways to add to your eShop account.

Well, you cannot resell or lend a copy of the game if you buy it digitally, right? Plus they are probably unsure about future access, much like many people in the West.

To all the replies:

First of all, I didn't say the sales were terrible or bad, I said that they weren't good. They're "OK" or slightly disappointing and here's why: There is no supply constraints. Comparing the Wii U's launch weeks to past consoles isn't a good comparison because those other consoles had supply issues.

The big stores, such as Yodobashi Camera and Tsutaya, are still short of cards – but they aren't difficult to hunt down in convenience stores. I think a lot of Animal Crossing's audience doesn't realise that you can obtain the game via the e-shop.

I think it's likely that, due to a lot of Animal Crossing players being new hardware buyers, Nintendo is delaying re-stocks in order to continue to be easily able to move hardware and software into the New Year. There are always stock issues with DS/3DS at this time of the year, and the types of people waiting for Animal Crossing will happily wait a little longer while friends talk about it and strangers play it on the train. It's everywhere right now, and it certainly won't be disappearing from the charts for a long time to come.

Perfect. Wii U sold 85% ( Dengeki) / 90% (Media Create) of its first shipment. According to MC, it had a pretty much equal ST compared to Wii's first week.
This means it was supply constrained in Japan. And given Iwata's excuses for Premium being low in supply, we can perfectly conclude Wii U suffered some problems with shipments this week too.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.

So Iwata lied during last night's Nintendo Direct?

Those 3DS numbers are insane. Expected though, since Nintendo tends to do well over the Holiday season but some of those software increases are just wow. Animal Crossing might be the first game to reach 2M even though it just released huh?

Regarding the Vita, it sucks to see it perform so poorly. At this point Sony needs to take a gamble and have a big price cut to see if that somehow sparks sales and thus development support =/

3DS sales are amazing, unfortunately atm it's a Japanese thing only, as with the PSP in the past years.
Wii U is kinda disappointing, sales are down and clearly below shipments during a holiday period, but I'll reserve the judgement until next week.
PS3 is on autopilot (same trajectory of last year with slighty lower numbers).
PSVita is just terrible but that happens when you go into the busiest period of the year without big games, the system had nice weeks when the software was there.

The vita cant even do 30k a week in holiday season. Thats simply a joke.

Well it had some ok weeks and then 1 week later things went back to terrible. What are the Vita's best weeks after launch?

So Iwata lied during last night's Nintendo Direct?

Of course he did. He works for nintendo so must of been.

1) What I wrote answering to Heavy is for you too.
2) You mean a nice week with Persona 4 and a nice week with Hatsune Miku, no?

I predict it'll be < 100k next week, probably in the mid to high 90s. We can't do ban bets but I'd bet something, whatever you'd like. /shrug

Franchise fatigue?

Nope.

Funny how a stronger hardware can still lose to a weaker one Nintendo seems to have been lucky here.

Power has nothing to do with anything here. It might be "somewhat" true for consoles, but it sure as hell doesn't apply to handhelds, and when you add Japan into the equation, it's even less important.

I don't think Nintendo was "lucky". Their only real flaw was the pricing, and that got corrected. One can argue if a second analogue stick is an issue or not.

To me, inherently, for a handheld it is not. But when Nintendo is thinking of receiving such support as Monster Hunter from Capcom and shooters, then i think that's where their thinking was flawed, not because fanboy or hater #X wanted a second analogue stick.

And as far as Vita's design flaws, I would say the backpad and 3G support some of them. It literally adds nothing worthwile. When i saw those as features of the console, I could recognize that Sony had no idea what it was doing with the handheld. Of course I never imagined it would do this bad, quite the opposite...

I don't think Sony necessarily needs to officially discontinue Vita, I can see them pulling a PSPGo with it though. The Go languished on the market for 2 years but all units produced were from the initial production run. With Vita, I can see them quietly ceasing production and then selling through the existing stock in the chain.

Anyway, Vita's fate isn't really up to Sony; they can't force developers/publishers to produce games and they can't force retailers to keep ordering units to sit on shelves.

It's crazy how Nintendo failed to make NSMB2 a system seller, but it could do that with Animal Crossing. I thought it would have done max. 3 million units, but now it seems it will be way luckier than that.

Well, the DS caught fire in japan before it did in the west. Those media create threads around the DS lite's launch were entertaining as hell.

It will be very interesting to see if the 3DS will be able to replicate the DS's global success. The DS's surge was brought about by numerous unique pieces of software (Layton, Brain Training, etc.). It's hard to really see the 3DS developing the same sort of identity.

Right there with you brosef.

I enjoy Nintendo hardware inspite of their decisions at times. Two sticks > One stick, regardless of mainstream success. No one is arguing that its a crucial piece to achieving sales greatness, but as GAMERS its much better for playability on our end, for the kinds of games we love.

Agreed?

I don't see it as much of a loss, tbh. Sub PS2- level graphics in shooting games and maybe twin-stick shooters? Nobody is actually interested in that.

Firstly, Wii U sellthrough in Japan is roughly the same as Wii at launch. In fact, Iwata made a personal apology about it last night.
Secondly, the idea that you know anything about Japanese stock supplies is totally laughable.

I predict it'll be < 100k next week, probably in the mid to high 90s. We can't do ban bets but I'd bet something, whatever you'd like. /shrug

Avatar bet? A Nintendo avatar of my choice.
Another condition would be that you don't come in to another Media Create thread unless you bother to learn context and expectations of Japanese sales first.

You probably won't even post in this thread if it does and you know ban bets aren't allowed. Oh and for all your going on about how not good this 2nd week is and how not good last week was (didn't seem to post after the 90% sellthrough came in) you never actually indicate anywhere what would be good.

That's a lot crazier than trying to turn Vita around in Japan, frankly.

It's not just the historical antipathy of Western developers towards dedicated handhelds; it's that there's no evidence that Vita (or dedicated handhelds in general, as RE:R's sales suggest and Mirror of Fate will probably prove) is a commercially viable platform for the type of cinematic AAA experience that most of those developers are predominantly interested in making.

In Japan, you can at least throw out third-party hypotheticals, as implausible as they are (an exclusive MGS/MH/GE/FF/DQ) that would be almost certain to significantly boost Vita sales if they actually happened. In the West, there's no indication that even a high-quality Bioshock/Elder Scrolls/COD/GTA spinoff would have the same impact.

About Mirror of Fate, I know I'm a little OT, but do we have some kind of numbers for Castlevania: Lord of Shadows' first NPD month? I just remember it became the best selling Castlevania title ever in US, but I don't remember how exactly it started in sales.
