LOS ANGELES — Ellen DeGeneres is dancing her way into the fourth judge's seat on "American Idol." Fox announced Wednesday the talk show host and comedian, who admittedly has no formal music experience other than a passion for tunes, would join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi for the ninth season starting in January.

The announcement all but seals the departure of Paula Abdul, who announced she was quitting the show amid a contract dispute in July.

DeGeneres told her talk show audience in an episode scheduled to air Thursday that she would not abandon her Emmy-winning chatfest, but would have "a day job and a night job."

"The times we're living in," she quipped, "we're all doing that."

Abdul had been replaced by a succession of guest judges as "American Idol" started next season's auditions. Among them: Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Kristin Chenoweth, Joe Jonas, Neil Patrick Harris, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry and Shania Twain – but not the 51-year-old DeGeneres.

"Hopefully, I'm the people's point of view because I'm just like you," DeGeneres said on her show. "I sit at home and I watch it, and I don't have that technical ... I'm not looking at it in a critical way from the producer's mind. I'm looking at it as a person who is going to buy the music and is going to relate to that person."

Well this is certainly unexpected.

They should do like WWE Monday Night RAW and have a surprise guest judge every week. Shaquille O'Neal one week.. Bob Barker the next.

Ellen DeGeneres: I don't understand a word of what you're saying, Simon. Is that turkish?
Simon Cowell: If your lifeguard duties were as good as your comedy, a lot of people would be drowning.

The end of American Idol?

happens only if Cowell leaves. In fact I think he's the only reason people keep watching it, but maybe I'm being generous with the audience

Wat? But why? She's never had a singing career (to my knowledge).
This is not "America's Top Comedian"

They can't even try to act like she has anything to do with music. How the fuck is this going to work? What advice can she give?

Here's how I watch American Idol.

DVR it. Avoid spoilers and watch it in the morning.

Fastforward through intro.

Listen to the beginning and end of the first song.

Fastforward to what Simon has to say. Goto next song. Rinse and repeat.

The whole process takes about 13-15 minutes and I minimize the amount of brain cells lost.

A 4th judge is completely unnecessary.

Considering how horrible and producer-minded the judges have become, Ellen might actually be a step above if she's unbiased.

Ellen was a guest judge on SYTYCD and it was easily one of my favorite shows. She obviously doesn't know about dance, but as she said, she represents the viewer and she was still really funny and humble.

I might actually watch because of her.

If she gets up and starts to dance during the audition or any time during the season i'm going to stop watching Idol. Plus I hate Kara. suck a nut ho.
