They JUST cancelled it due to declining ratings?!?!?!

Aside from Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, what did any of the winners end up doing? I guess similarly, where are the winners of The Voice?
I remember Clay Aiken had a career, despite placing second, but even the guy who beat him just up and disappeared.
They JUST cancelled it due to declining ratings?!?!?!
It's called that by the same people that call NBC "the peacock".
Is ABC really called "The Alphabet"? I've never heard that before.
Yep. I preferred X-factor over Idol cause of Simon alone.
If it gets debuted on NBC, which it won't since the battle is between ABC and Fox.A key part of this revival is that Simon will be back.
The ABC deal would preclude the involvement of original judge Simon Cowell, who was rumored to be a possibility to rejoin the show at NBC, where he produces ”America's Got Talent" and has an exclusive agreement.
ABC emerged as the front-runner to land Idol earlier this week, though Fox the show's home for 15 seasons was said to still be in the mix. NBC, which also put in an offer for the show earlier this year, was out of the bidding.
Few in reality thought American Idol was gone for good when Fox shut it down after 15 seasons in 2016, but a broadcast return this soon seemed unlikely. Still, Fremantle has been aggressive in trying to find a new home for the once-global franchise.
The return of American Idol back on the Big Four is a bit of a head-scratcher. It was a shell of its former self when it finally wrapped up, averaging a 3.0 rating among adults 18-49 and 11 million viewers in its final season. Those numbers, which include time-shifting, are actually pretty good by most standards though not by the ones the show was held up against. American Idol came with an incredible price tag for Fox, which had to pay astronomical salaries to talent most notably to Seacrest and judge Jennifer Lopez.
American Idol is fine, but they need to alter the formula a bit. There's no need for people to line up in cities around the country when you can upload an audition in a instant. Round 1 should definitely be video submission only and have the internet vote on the entries. Round 2 should be judges clearing out the junk from that group, then Round 3 should be back to internet voting.
Do any of the talent that make it through these shows ever actually reach any amount of sustained success?
It seems like as soon as they're done with the show everyone moves on.
How is leaving after 14 years too soon?American Idol is a pop-culture staple that left the air too soon, said Dungey. ABC is the right home to reignite the fan base. We are thrilled viewers will once again share in these inspiring stories of people realizing their dreams.
Is that a threat?Disney co-chairman Ben Sherwood in another line could be interpreted as a dig at their rival said the new version would be an improvement upon Foxs run.
Idol is an entertainment icon, and now it will air where it belongs, in ABCs lineup of addictive fan favorites alongside Dancing with the Stars and The Bachelor, he said. America, get ready for the return of a bigger, bolder and better-than-ever Idol.
It's going to be nothing but quick cuts, hashtags and emojis.
Only if Dunkleman comes back also.I think this either lives or dies based on if they can get Seacrest back. He really was the glue that bound this show together.
Feeling the heat from the voice.
It'd be interesting if they use this as an opportunity to soft-reboot the format a bit. Shorten up the season, maybe see if they can make live voting and elimination work in practice. I think if you can condense this down into a regular Sunday block of programming, there's potential for strong event television.
Or more likely, this dies in less than a season.
God I hate all the quick cuts and audience reaction shots. Can't stand Got Talent because of this. I'm pretty sure the audience members they cut to for reactions are all plants. I just want to watch an entire act uncutIt's going to be nothing but quick cuts, hashtags and emojis.
I've been over auditions for a long time. Last few seasons I would just catch highlights online.
Reduce auditions, lengthen Hollywood Week (best part of the show).
For Semis, I prefer the Top 24 whittled down to 12 over 3 weeks method.
Also please get rid of the Judges' save. Leads to worse performances, and it would only have prevented one Shocking!Elimination (Jennifer Hudson) from happening. Also it never saved anyone with a chance save for Jessica Sanchez.
How do you make live voting and elimination work when only two time zones get to do it while the show is airing? There will be zero reason for people on West side to watch the show if they wish to vote.

ABC is the official new home of American Idol.
The broadcaster revealed Tuesday morning on Good Morning America that it has given a greenlight to a 16th season of the long-running music competition. The series order ends not only a process that saw multiple networks explore bringing the reality franchise to their air, but also a briefer-than-anticipated absence for a show that just a year ago celebrated its farewell season.
America, get ready for the return of a bigger, bolder and better-than-ever Idol, Disney/ABC TV Group president Ben Sherwood promised.
American Idol is a pop-culture staple that left the air too soon, said Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, in a statement. ABC is the right home to reignite the fan base. We are thrilled viewers will once again share in these inspiring stories of people realizing their dreams.
The new-model Idol comes from FremantleMedia North America and Core Media Groups 19 Entertainment. Executive producers include FremantleMedia North Americas Trish Kinane and Jennifer Mullin. Fox is believed to still have an ownership interest in the show.
ABCs passion and enthusiasm make them a perfect home for American Idol, said Cecile Frot-Coutaz, CEO of FremantleMedia Group. We are excited to be partnering with them to discover the next generation of talented artists. Its an irresistible combination that means now is the ideal time to welcome back one of the most successful shows in the history of contemporary television.
I think this either lives or dies based on if they can get Seacrest back. He really was the glue that bound this show together.
Seems random that ABC of all networks would pick this up.
have they approached doolittle yet
Hasn't it only been dead for like, a year? Seems like such a short timeframe for a reboot.
Hollywood Week was also my favorite. Seems like a lot of drama there which is still unlike the reality TV we have now.
I think reviving this on a Disney network and giving it the backing of their vast resources makes some sense. If anything can return Idol to prominence, it's Disney's cross promotion. And I'm not joking about that either. Disney has its tentacles in a lot of demographic buckets and would give Idol a ton of visibility.
Isn't the "American Idol Experience" at Disney MGM studios?
